We usually prefer to travel to places that have lots of active things to do, even with our three-year-old son, from hiking to surfing, skiing to parachuting we love to try new things.
This weekend though we found ourselves tired and in need of a peaceful slow-paced vibe, and what better place to unwind than Alentejo.
This big region - one-third of the country by area - is known for its relaxing environment, wine and exquisite food.
Not far from Évora is Monsaraz our chosen location this weekend.
Monsaraz
IT's a magical place that seems suspended in time from the moment you enter its walls. The entire village is located on the top of a hill with a magnificent view over Alqueva's dam and even the Spanish border.
Being magnificently preserved you can feel like visiting an outdoor museum.
What to visit
The first thing, of course, would be to just walk around the walls and appreciate the views and the architecture.
The castle, a unique place in Portugal and the best place to enjoy a splendid sunset while looking at the impressive Alqueva Dam.

Evoramonte Castle, visible many kilometers around it, is made up of an extensive 1000 m perimeter wall, which embraces the crest of an elevation in the rugged surroundings of Serra d´Ossa. This structure is a well-established medieval fence, over 400 m in altitude, with a fortified palace built on top of the crest.

Evoramonte Alentejo Portugal HD
Dominating the Alentejo plain, at the top of a hill with 481 meters of altitude, there is the Castle of Evoramonte, a town that was distinguished in the history of contemporary Portugal because the Convention was signed there on May 26, 1834, reestablished Peace in Portugal, after several years of bloody civil war between liberals and absolutists.
About your foundation little is known. Probably it was conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1166, but there are no reliable sources that can confirm it.
The first mention of Evoramonte arose in the year 1248, when D. Afonso III granted him Charter of Foral, later corroborated and extended in 1271, with the purpose of populating the village.
In 1306, with the aim of protecting the town and its inhabitants, D. Dinis ordered the construction of the medieval walls, which still remain today and maintain their four arched doors from the time of the foundation.
D. Nuno Alvares Pereira receives the village by donation in 1385 and cedes it, in 1461, to his grandson D. Fernando, making it the property of the Duchy of Bragança.
15 of December of 1516 D. Manuel I grants to the town the Charter of Foral of New Reading, confirming the Term Evoramontense.
In February 1531 the village was shaken by a violent earthquake that almost completely destroyed its medieval structures.
To assert the power of the House of Braganza at the time, D. Jaime I and D. Teodósio I had the walls reinforced with cylindrical ramparts and erected the imposing Tower / Paço Ducal, just after the earthquake.
The Tower is a unique example of the transition military architecture, the final Manueline, with no precedent or precedent in Portugal, and which served essentially as the hunting residence of the Dukes of Bragança. Its dominant and scenic position in the middle of the plain fulfills in its entirety the purpose of its construction: to affirm the House of Bragança as the second most powerful of the Kingdom and giving meaning to the maxim After You, We, that is, after of the King, the House of Bragança. This particularity is strongly present in the design of the building, through the Nodes that involve the same and which are a symbol of the Bragantina heraldry, adopted by the architects responsible for its authors, brothers Francisco and Diogo de Arruda.
The Evoramonte Convention was signed at the house of Joaquim António Sarmago, President of the Chamber at the time, and confirmed the victory of the Liberals, followers of D. Pedro IV, under the absolutists, followers of D. Miguel. This war between siblings would thus end in a modest house in the Rua Direita of this town, where the Dukes of Terceira and Saldanha, by the liberals, and General Joaquim Azevedo e Lemos, absolutist chief, signed the Convention, which resulted in the exile of D. Miguel for Austria and in the triumph of Liberalism in Portugal.

After picking up the rental car, we started a meandering drive towards Porto. The first stop of the day was at the walled village of Obidos. Being so close to Lisbon, the town was a bit crowded with tourists, but it was still an attractive village.

Monsaraz
Megalithic monuments from prehistory stand like an eery Stonehenge on the outskirts Monsaraz, one of the oldest settlements in southern Portugal. Like most towns on the Spanish-Portugal border, the castle of Monsaraz was built high on a hilltop for defense. The Moors, Christians and Knights of Templar have all ruled the castle at some point with each leaving a cultural mark. Alentejan cuisine and tourism are now the town’s biggest draws. The ancient streets zig zag past uneven cottages in this sleepy, authentic Portugese city.
Tomar
The Knights of Templar were a religious military faction ordained by the Pope. They were among the most skilled fighters during the crusades and non-fighting members were advanced in the world of finance. They ruled Christendom from the 12th to the 14th centuries, and they once called Tomar home. Nestled against the Sete Montes Woods, this historical gem still boasts the Convento de Christo, the towering former home of the Knights. Take a stroll through history by visiting the Almourol Castle and the old synagogue then enjoy the Fatias de Tomar; a confectionary bread snack made here for generations.
Marvao
South of Almeida, built high on a hilltop, rests Marvao. This town of less than 5,000 is not for the faint of heart. The ancient, narrow alleys of the town are carved right into a crag jutting out from the hillside. The houses in Marvao are bright and adorned with flowers. The view is breathtaking and panoramic allowing you to take in Portugal’s eastern landscapes. A castle defends the town, but there isn’t much history of siege or war which leaves the old time buildings intact. A handful of guestrooms lure travelers looking for the road less traveled.
Monsanto
In central Portugal you’ll find a hill strewn with 200-ton boulders as if they were dropped from the sky. Nestled in between the boulders are the houses and buildings of Monsanto. Donkeys are still used for transportation by less than 1,000 permanent residents. The ingenuity of the community shows as the boulders serve as fortifications, walls and even roofs. There’s even one house built right into one of the largest rocks in town. Once named the most Portugese town in Portugal, this unique city is a can’t-miss when in the central region.

The historical village of Castelo Rodrigo as a whole is a genuine location of monuments preserving important medieval references. PORTEL, village belongs to the district of Évora, located on the mountain of the same name, immediately stands out for its huge and monumental castle with an impressive tower. It's a very old village, that once had Muslim occupation, with rich historical and architectural heritage: a Church with baroque lines, the Misericórdia Church, Espírito Santo Church with a marble gate, Nossa Srª do Socorro Monastery and still within the walls of the castle, the ruins of the S.João e os Paços dos Duques de Bragança Chapel. Walking along the streets, we still find beautiful sculptures such as D.Nuno Álvares Pereira in the county hall, firefighters and Alentejo women, tribute sculptures.by*carl0spais*2013
