Exploring Abandoned Mines in Philipsburg Montana | R1200GS | Part I
Part I ----
Part II ----
After the Overland Expo I headed North to visit a work friend who lives in Philipsburg, Montana. I really enjoy the small towns of #Montana and I really enjoy the beer at the Philipsburg Brewery. My buddy is one of the owners at the brewery and just a great dude in general so a short visit is always a good time! During the day, I planned to shoot some #photography and explore the dirt roads, see the abandoned mines and just enjoy the #backcountry of Montana. I honestly don't think there is a bad part of Montana. The people of Montana are AMAZING! They are super down to earth and just stoked chat. The connection between towns is verey interesting bc when locals give you directions they often mention a place AND maybe who owns it and why that individual is a pillar of the community. I could go on forever about small-town Montana and Philipsburg but I'll end there. Go check it out!

Montana Sapphires Mountain Mining Men!
Sapphires from the USA!
Montana sapphires are the only fine quality durable gemstones found in the United States. Diamonds are found in a few places like Arkansa but they are inferior quality and very small. Sapphires from Montana are very marketable and extremely beautiful; they are truly a world class gemstone. Here at The Natural Sapphire Company we're very proud of our massive collection which we've been building for a long long time. In this video we summarize an introduction to this amazing gemstone.
In search of a facetable gem stone (garnet).
Today we went to Big Silver Creek behind Harrison lake to see if we could find a garnet big enough to facet (cut into a gem stone) This pace is at the 34 km mark up the Harrison East forest service road. This is an active logging road and during logging hour you must use a resource road radio. Otherwise you will get squashed by a large logging truck. The garnets are everywhere. But unfortunately we did not find that one big one for faceting.

FINDING SAPPHIRES - How To Identify the Good Wash | Liz Kreate
In prospecting for sapphires, finding the good wash or Ancient Wash is like finding the Holy Grail. Experience is the key to identifying this type of material. The wash is always laden with Spinel aka Black Jack which is the indicator for a good Sapphire bearing material. No Spinel equals No Sapphire. More spinel, more sapphires.

pictures of Virginia City Montana
Virginia City Montana is one of the gold rush cities. Its a place for any old west history buff. these are pictures I took on one of my trips there in August of 2009.
All of Montana has the deepest pride and affection for Virginia City. No more colorful pioneer mining camp ever existed. Dramatic tales of the early days in this vicinity are legion. Rich placer diggings were discovered in Alder Gulch in the spring of 1863 and the stampede of gold seekers and their parasites was on! Sluices soon lined the gulch and various cities blossomed forth as trading and amusement centers for free handed miners. Virginia City, the best known of these and the sole survivor, became the Capitol of the Territory.
The very much alive ghost town, Virginia City, Montana, is frozen in time. It is a remarkably well preserved old west Victorian gold mining town just 20 miles west of Yellowstone National Park (90 miles by road). When the gold ran out, there was still enough left so that homes and businesses were occupied, but there was not enough wealth to remodel the buildings. So it froze, and now represents the whole Victorian era. It is the true and original Old West. It is a gem, held within an incredibly rich area of natural beauty, recreation and history.

2015 Sapphire Mining Season
We didn't get much time at the mine this year due to running the tour company but as always we did make it. It would turn out that the virgin soil on the upper claim didn't pan out but we managed to locate where the original gold and sapphire miners cleaned and sorted their material. Huge numbers of sapphires, all smaller but some great colors and still a lot of fun. More videos to come from this dig season!

215 651 8329 Discovering Fossils combines the latest scientific knowledge and fieldwork to create a continually up-to-date library of resources.
The study of the prehistoric world provides a lifelong interest that is as variable in discoveries as it is dramatic in length of time. From the initial building blocks of life to the birth of plants, insects, dinosaurs and even mankind, the science of palaeontology leaves no stone unturned. The initial study of palaeontology soon grows into a fascinating range of practical and mental challenges that enrich and enthuse the individual.
Fossils inspire the individual to consider prehistoric life in the context of former environments and appreciate how global events have shaped the modern world. Like the pages of a book, the fossil record provides a storyboard of dramatic changes in the earth's history, each period leaving its own unique legacy in the rocks.
