Montezuma's Castle and Well National Monument, Near Fort Verde, Arizona
The trip to Montezuma's Castle was interesting, but not one of our most fun. The Well, on the other hand, was quite scenic and exciting. I also got to enjoy some Native American Flute Music performed live by Harry Seavey (
Montezuma's Castle had a nice visitor's center and some interesting things to purchase and watch, but the Castle itself was a bit disappointing. We couldn't get as up close to it as other sites we had recently been to, and it was much more crowded and noisy than the others as well. Still, the flute music was nice, and if your looking for souvenirs this is definitely the place.
Montezuma's Well was far more interesting with a more involved hike. Especially going down to the outlet on the back side of the well is a very nice and scenic place to be. The giant trees and man-made ditch are especially fun to see.
You cannot walk from one place to the other (it's a 20-minute drive partially along the freeway), which may be while most people don't show up as well after seeing the Castle, which is unfortunate because the Well is likely the better spot to see.
These are probably the most popular Verde Valley Archeology sights to go see, but there are plenty more in the area. Be sure to check out my other videos for more great places to visit like this.

Montezuma Castle National Monument - Camp Verde, Arizona
Montezuma Castle National Monument protects a set of well-preserved dwellings located in Camp Verde, Arizona which were built and used by the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture closely related to the Hohokam and other indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States,[4] between approximately 1100 and 1425 AD. The main structure comprises five stories and twenty rooms, and was built over the course of three centuries.
Neither part of the monument's name is correct. When European-Americans first observed the ruins in the 1860s, by then long-abandoned, they named them for the famous Aztec emperor Montezuma in the mistaken belief that he had been connected to their construction (see also Montezuma mythology).[6] In fact, the dwelling was abandoned more than 40 years before Montezuma was born, and was not a castle in the traditional sense, but instead functioned more like a prehistoric high rise apartment complex”, as many families lived there.
Several Hopi clans and Yavapai communities trace their ancestries to early immigrants from the Montezuma Castle/Beaver Creek area. Clan members periodically return to these ancestral homes for religious ceremonies. (Wikipedia)

Montezuma's Castle, ARIZONA 1 minute locations
Recorded on Sept. 2009. Its not really a castle, but preserved cliff dwellings carved into the sandstone cliffs high above Beaver Creek. The five story, 20 room cliff dwelling stands like a high-rise ancient apartment building standing guard over the valley below. It was built by the Sinaqua Indian Tribe which means without water about 700 years ago in the early 1300s.

The site contains a set of well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, located near the town of Camp Verde, Arizona. The dwellings were built and used by the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture closely related to the Hohokam and other indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States. Montezuma Well Gateway to the Underworld (Legends of the Verde Valley) Documentary
NOTE: This is a chapter out of the series and book Legends of the Verde Valley which you can get by licking on the link below.
This short documentary makes a few connects between what the local tribal elders have to say and the legends surrounding this one of a kind place. The false bottom is freaky giving some depth to this part in the series based off the book.
Of all the mysterious places in the Verde Valley the Montezuma Well has to be the most fascinating sense it is a physical reality with depths unlike anywhere else in the world. The fact the Native American Indians knew and spoke of the place as being the home of a god featured in another segment in this series called Legend of the Plumber Serpent long before any dives or other tests were done to determine the false bottom is astonishing! It gives some credit to the people who lived in ancient times who showed there knowledge was correct and insightful before science could even dream to prove it.
Lastly other religions in the Middle East believe powerful beings are bound in the earth specifically within Wells where they await an appointed time to be released. [13] The fact there are beliefs in Islam through prophecies which state there are subterranean personalities that will emerge from a Well who one of their leading personalities went down into centuries ago and is scheduled to come back up through the same well to lead an Islamic revolution to victory at a curtain time in the future gives some credit the legends found here in the Verde Valley at Montezuma Well. The idea that such a being could live in and come up out of the well is biblical in scope sense the bible itself speaks of these gateways existing on earth.
Indeed the Montezuma Well is the Verde Valley's most Legendary Vortex for you can truly see its swirling motion in reality!
