Poverty in Montgomery County
This week, in the first half of A Miner Detail, host Ryan will interview Interfaith Works of Rockville CEO, Shane Rock, Margo Fonoroff, and Mary Ann Sestili.
Margo Fonoroff is a former public school teacher and principal. Both Fornoff and her husband have organized the annual Park Potomac Ice Cream Social for Charity, involving hundreds of residents and local businesses within the community, according to a news release. In the past five years, the event has collected thousands of donated new backpacks and school supplies for needy schoolchildren. Mary Ann Sestili received the Legacy of Leadership Award. Sestili has volunteered for the nonprofit’s Friends in Action Program, mentoring needy families. She then served on its board as secretary, chairwoman and now vice chairwoman of its Governance Committee.
In the latter half of the show, Ryan will interview Diana M. Pearce, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer and Director, Center for Women’s Welfare of University of Washington, School of Social Work about the Self-Sufficiency Standard, and alternative measures of the costs of a basic-needs budget, varied by family type, and place.

Silver Spring is an unincorporated area, City, and census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It had a population of 76,716 according to 2013 estimates by the United States Census Bureau, making it the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown.[2]
The urbanized, oldest, and southernmost part of Silver Spring is a major business hub that lies at the north apex of Washington, D.C. As of 2004, the Central Business District (CBD) held 7,254,729 square feet (673,986 m2) of office space, 5216 dwelling units and 17.6 acres (71,000 m2) of parkland. The population density of this CBD area of Silver Spring was 15,600 per square mile all within 360 acres (1.5 km2) and approximately 2.5 square miles (6 km2) in the CBD/downtown area.[3] The community has recently undergone a significant renaissance, with the addition of major retail, residential, and office developments.
Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered there in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, tucked away in an area of south Silver Spring away from the main downtown area, is believed to be the site of the original spring.
Twenty-first century
At the beginning of the 21st century, downtown Silver Spring began to see the results of redevelopment. Several city blocks near City Place Mall were completely reconstructed to accommodate a new outdoor shopping plaza called Downtown Silver Spring. New shops included national retail chains such as Whole Foods Market, a 20-screen Regal Theatres, Men's Wearhouse, Ann Taylor Loft, DSW Shoe Warehouse, Office Depot, and the now-closed Pier 1 Imports, as well as many restaurants, including Panera Bread, Red Lobster, Cold Stone Creamery, Fuddruckers, Potbelly Sandwich Works, Nando's Peri-Peri, and Chick-fil-a. A Borders book store was a popular spot until it closed when the chain went out of business; it was replaced by H&M. In addition to these chains, Downtown Silver Spring is home to a wide variety of family-owned restaurants representing its vast ethnic diversity. As downtown Silver Spring revived, its 160-year history was celebrated in a PBS documentary entitled Silver Spring: Story of an American Suburb, released in 2002.[28] In 2003, Discovery Communications completed the construction of its headquarters and relocated to downtown Silver Spring from nearby Bethesda. The same year also brought the reopening of the Silver Theatre, as AFI Silver, under the auspices of the American Film Institute. Development continues with the opening of new office buildings, condos, stores, and restaurants. In 2015-16, the long-struggling City Place Mall underwent a complete renovation, had its name changed to Ellsworth Place, and brought in new tenants, including TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less (a re-opening original tenant), Michaels, Forever 21, and Dave & Buster's. The restoration of the old B&O Passenger Station was undertaken between 2000 and 2002, as recorded in the documentary film Next Stop: Silver Spring.[29][30] In 2005 Downtown Silver Spring was awarded the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal.

STORYLINE:
US authorities say a bus driver shot dead on Tuesday, was the Washington-area sniper's 13th victim.
A spokesman for the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said ballistics and other evidence had connected Tuesday's shooting of Conrad Johnson, aged 35, to the fatal shootings of nine other people in the area.
Authorities believe Johnson was the 13th victim in what may be a multimillion-dollar extortion attempt. He was shot dead in the same community where the shootings began October 2.
Members of Johnson's family brought flowers to the scene of his killing Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, anxious parents took their children back to schools in the region after a chilling threat, apparently from the gunman and reported in the news media, that your children are not safe.
While schools remained open in Montgomery County on Wednesday, many were under a Code Blue alert, which meant children could play outside, and windows had to be closed and shuttered.
Addressing criticism that police did not reveal the threat for several days, Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said that investigators were not sacrificing public safety in their pursuit of the case.

Integration of the Montgomery County Public Schools (Paths #07)

In 1954, the Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision stating that segregation in public schools was inherently unconstitutional and that all jurisdictions must integrate with deliberate speed. Montgomery County moved swiftly toward that end. This program investigates how MCPS implemented desegregation and presents reminiscences by former teachers and students who were there.
Tribute to my father
Mayor Peter Thomas Menke, 69, of Barnesville MD died on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. Pete was the son of the late Dorothy Gray Menke and the late George V. Menke. He was the beloved husband, best friend and partner of Patricia Hillard Menke. Pete is survived by his brother George, and wife Julie and brother John and wife Meg. Pete was the best father and deeply loved his four children, daughter Meredith G. Menke and husband Dave Coker, daughter Crystal Gaddis Boyd and husband Cabot, son Craig Gaddis and wife Jacqueline of Barnesville, and daughter Samantha Menke; and four grandchildren, Ethan and Ashton Gaddis, Ava and Chloe Boyd.
Pete graduated from Richard Montgomery High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Shepherd University in West Virginia where he played varsity football and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He continued on to earn the equivalency of a Doctorate degree in credits. He was an athletic director, physical education teacher and a varsity basketball and football coach. He served in the Montgomery County Public School system for over 33 years where he received many accolades and awards. He retired as an Athletic Director from Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, VA after 10 years in June 2010. His intense work ethic continued to drive him, even during the summer when he would do an array of community jobs. Pete became a Commissioner for the Town of Barnesville in 1975 and Mayor in 2001. He was Treasurer for the Maryland Mayors Association. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Maryland Municipal League and Maryland State Athletic Directors Association. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Barnesville.
Pete held tight to his responsibilities, but never took himself too seriously. He was a man of high values with an unwavering moral compass. He always pursued justice and fairness, not only in every decision he made, but also in how he viewed the world. Throughout his career, he advocated for women's athletics and initiated numerous programs to create equal opportunities for all students.
As mayor, he pioneered the restoration of a historical building in Barnesville to establish the Town Hall for the community.
Pete was a devoted family man and loved to share stories, good food and good times with his loved ones. In his spare time, he enjoyed working outside, landscaping and helping his neighbors. He spent summers on his boat in the Chesapeake Bay with his family, crabbing, hiking, driving his Cobra, gardening and antiquing. His appreciation for nature and history often led him to enjoy bike rides or long walks on Sugarloaf Mountain or the C&O Canal. He enjoyed the changing seasons and long drives to see the fall foliage. He is famous for his delicious Chocolate Chip Cookies and homemade French Fries, which he loved to make for his children and grandchildren.
Before Being Struck by Car, Boy Ran to Familiar Faces
A three-year-old boy is dead after being hit by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon. The child has been identified as Antonio Martinez Cruz of Rockville.
“Fire and rescue were working to extricate the child from underneath the vehicle… the child was transported to the hospital and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries there,” said Captain Tom Jordan with the Montgomery County Police Department.
Police say the tragic incident happened in the Sandy Spring Bank parking lot located on the 600 block of Rockville Pike, when the young boy got away from his mother and attempted to run toward familiar faces.
“It’s our understanding that the child was with his mother…possibly saw some people he knew across the area which would have made him go into the travel portion of the parking lot…he darted into the travel portion of the parking lot, and was struck by the vehicle,” said Captain Jordan.
According to a press release, the driver – 44-year-old Pedro Zavala Leal stayed on the scene and waited for authorities to arrive.
“They’re going to look at everything involving the circumstances surrounding it… they’re going to make their determination once they’ve done their investigation to determine whether or not charges should be levied, and they will consult with the State’s Attorney’s Office on that,” said Captain Jordan.
Police are asking that If anyone witnessed the collision or has additional information regarding this incident, to please contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.

The Spanish Flu Pandemic: Influenza in Montgomery County
Alan Hawk spoke to an audience at the 2018 Montgomery County History Conference.
This presentation explores how the “Spanish Flu” spread through Montgomery County, Maryland, and its effect on its population. Even a century after the pandemic, Montgomery County continues to have a role in characterizing and understanding 1918 Influenza Virus. In 1918, Montgomery County, Maryland was a rural county with a growing suburb served by the Metropolitan Line of the B&O Railroad and an expanding trolley car network. When the Spanish Flu arrived in the county it was mobilizing for World War I. On September 28, a 9-year old boy died of Lobular Pneumonia and Influenza in Forest Glen, Maryland. During the next five months, over 200 Montgomery County residents would die of influenza and/or pneumonia. However, Montgomery County’s role with the Spanish Flu did not end in 1919. In 1996, Jeffrey Taubenberger and Ann Reid of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology used pathological specimens to isolate and sequence a portion of the genetic structure of the influenza virus.
Nearly a century after the pandemic, federal civilian and military public health agencies monitor any incidences of emerging novel influenza strains that may arise worldwide to ensure the best available and proper countermeasures are in place before a pandemic occurs.

There are certainly also a lot of calls in the area with regards to shootings, shots fired, people that may have heard something. They are all being responded to by the police and I want to stress that none of them have been found to be related to the shootings. When you have no idea who the guy is, and there is millions of guys to chose from, keeping something secret doesn't do you much good because you'll never have anyone to prosecute anyway. So it is far better to go public with a piece of information so that the public can turn around and say wait a minute I know who owns those shoes, wait a minute I know who owns that knife.? In this particular case, for example with the tarot card they didn't want to go public and still have not shown it, if this is connected to the crime this is the best piece of information they have so far that would make him ... separate him from the crowd.

STORYLINE:
Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Monday, US President George W. Bush said the Washington area sniper attacks made him sick to his stomach.
The Bush administration has offered federal law assistance to Washington area police agencies that have been immersed in the search for the gunman over the past week.
Investigators say they have been deluged with tips, including false alarms, as residents remain on edge, with tension mounting in the longest lull in the series of shootings that began nearly two weeks ago.
Also Monday, Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose told reporters that everyone is edgy.
