The history of Montrose County's hanging flume
Our state's heritage is steeped in sweat and built on the backs of those who believed they were bound for glory and in Montrose County, that hard work is still on display.
Montrose, CO - Ute Indian Museum
The only History Colorado museum on the Western Slope, the Ute Indian Museum offers one of the most complete collections of Ute artifacts in the United States. Dioramas, changing exhibits, and engaging programs bring history and culture of past, present and future generations together for all to learn about and enjoy.
The museum grounds include the Ouray Memorial Park, teepees, picnic areas, and the gravesite of Chief Ouray’s wife Chipeta, a native plants garden, an outdoor display of the Dominquez-Escalante Expedition of 1776, a pier out to the Uncompahgre River, and a museum store that features Ute pottery, silver, jewelry, books, and other handcrafted Indian artwork.
A multi-million dollar expansion is currently happening at the museum with an anticipated grand opening in June of 2017. Visit the temporary location at the Montrose Visitor Center located at 107 S Cascade Ave.
A special thank you to Mysterium Music , R.Carlos Nakai and Peter Kater for the Ritual piece used in this video.

Colorado Preservation, Inc. - Dana Crawford Awards 2018
**State Honor Award - Ute Indian Museum**
Nestled in the heart of traditional Ute territory, the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose, Colorado, is History Colorado’s only facility in western Colorado. The Museum was built in 1956 on the original lands of Uncompahgre leader Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta. The Ute Indian Museum celebrates the history and the living culture of Colorado’s longest continuous residents and features one of the most extensive collections of Ute ethnographic objects in existence.
The State of Colorado appropriated $2.9 million to renovate the Ute Indian Museum building. The expanded Museum makes connections between past and contemporary Ute life and culture and the Ute peoples’ history of adaptation and persistence. After several years of collaboration between History Colorado and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe on planning, construction, exhibit design, and fundraising the museum re-opened to the public on June 10, 2017.

Rimrocker Trail - Part 1 - Montrose, CO to Nucla, CO
My Dad and I try to find, and stay on, the new Rimrocker Trail that goes from Montrose, CO to Moab, UT. In this video, we’ll cover the first part of the trail from Montrose, CO to Nucla, CO.
Official Website for the Rimrocker Trail:
Local news story on the new Rimrocker Trail:
Part 1 Directions - Montrose, CO to Nucla, CO:
To get to the staging area of the Rimrocker Trail outside Montrose, CO navigate to (N38 25.833 W107 59.116). The approach to the staging area should bring you down Highway 90.
The staging area is useful as a rally point and for airing down but do not depart the staging area using any of the local off road trails. You start the Rimrocker Trail by making a left back onto Highway 90.
Before leaving the staging area reset your trip meter to zero - the approximated distances below are based on this.
As you proceed down Highway 90 you should start to see Rimrocker Trail signposts, which are green in color. However, in the National Forests, the Rimrocker Trail signposts are brown.
At approximately 11.7 miles from the staging area, you should enter the Uncompahgre National Forest. At this point, Highway 90 Road is now signed as Forest Service Road (FSR) 540. Continue to follow FSR 540.
At approximately 14.5 miles from the staging area, FSR 402 (aka Divide Road) joins from the left – continue straight on FSR 540/402.
At approximately 15.2 miles from the staging area, FSR 540 diverges to the left. Do not follow FSR 540 but continue straight on FSR 402 (aka Divide Road) toward Columbine Pass.
At approximately 30.8 miles from the staging area, an important left hand turn onto onto FSR 503 will be at Columbine Pass (N38 25.025 W108 22.8778). The road FSR 503 is also known as 25 Mesa Road and the Delta-Nucla Road.
At approximately 47.1 miles from the staging area, you will leave the national forest and hit pavement on 25 Mesa Road and the Delta-Nucla Road.
At approximately 53.3 miles from the staging area, you should enter Nucla, CO where you'll turn right on East 4th Avenue (N38 16.204 W108 32.207).
Turn left onto Main Street and head South into Nucla to start the next leg.
