Full Hike: The Falling Pillar of Monument Mountain in Massachusetts
Sometime ago, somewhere up here, an author found his inspiration. The story was written; one for the ages. And the white whale became infamous. But, the adventures continue...
Begin this adventure by leaving your vehicle in the parking lot there. Remember to pay the fee—a small price to keep this jewel reserved for all generations. Next comes the trailhead, but then, which way? Left: the family rejoice. Right: more befitting of a long-term planner, because this (the Hickey Trail) is a tough descent first, but a leisurely stroll down after.
Higher up, The Squaw Peak Trail is an optional connector and crosses a 1642-foot peak. It also leads to the Devil's Pulpit, a perplexing stone pillar that demands full scrutiny yet impossible to access. Here is Monument Mountain's own leaning tower—desperately wanting to fall over but never allowed to. Stare hard enough and maybe the devilish creator will divulge any unholy secrets.

My Thoughts:
An apposite description for this video is required, thought I, considering the literary giants who found refuge upon these mountain slopes. Thus, I followed the maddened captain on his doomed voyage and learned more about whaling than I ever did before; which was easy because I knew nothing before. But in the end I was a mere unworthy imitator, masquerading among an often imitated bunch.
Back to my own adventure: I chose right. I found this hike a bit short, but the leaning stone column was a worthy sidequest. How wholly unnatural the way nature could sculpt such forms. How intentionally masterful. Most others chose left at the trailhead.
Either way, this was a family-friendly hike, fun for all. A good introduction to hiking in the region.

Monument Mountain - Great Barrington, MA - Trail Running with Coach Steve Mackel
Steve Mackel, Los Angeles based running coach, was traveling through Great Barrington and was told about a cool trail going to the top of Monument Mountain. I was staying at the Briarcliff Motel just off he 7, just a minute from the Monument Mountain parking area.
Sunday morning and was pretty much by myself. Richard the owner of the Briarcliff told me one of his guest was a trail runner and had made it to the top in 28 minutes. It sounded like a challenge. Steeper and a little more technical than I had imagined the top was 22 minutes, including shooting this video.
This is a great short run/hike. It takes a few hours if you hike it and hang out a little longer than I did. All I brought was water, but a sandwich at the top would have been nice. The Great Barrington area is quite nice.

Monument Mountain High School Redesigned for a 21st Century Education | Connecting Point
What might 21st Century education look like? At New York University, a group of more than 20 undergrad students tackled this idea as part of the Paideia Project. The team zeroed in on the aging Monument Mountain High School in Great Barrington, MA as their test subject. They hope concepts built into the new Monument Mountain design could be applied to new projects in the future. Carrie Saldo sat down with team architect Sam Winslow and team leader Josh Shapiro, a native of Stockbridge, to learn more.
