Togo - Independence Monument
Opened in 1960
The Independence Monument also know as The Monument de L'Independance was built as a tribute to Togo’s independence from France on April 27, 1960. The structure is composed of a human silhouette carved within it and surrounded by promenades, palm trees, manicured lawns, fountains and a black gold iron fence. The park in which it is built in is usually opened at specified times, so if you’re lucky to visit when open then you’re sure to enjoy a more close-up view of the monument. However, it’s also cool walking around the park while you enjoy the dancing and drumming of the kids in the plaza across the street from the monument.

Emotions, lamentations et prières au monument de l'indépendance [05/05/2012]
Après une première tentative réprimée par les forces de l'ordre le 27 Avril 2012, les citoyens de Lomé et militants du collectif Sauvons le Togo se retrouvent avec beaucoup d'émotion ce 5 Mai 2012 sous le monument de l'indépendance. Ce monument, confisqué et habituellement fermé au public par le régime dictatorial Gnassingbé, a ressemblé pour un instant au mur des lamentations.

Gnassingbe Eyadema Holds Largest Togolese Military Parade For Independence Celebration | Apr. 1972
Thursday, April 27 1972.
Footage of President Gnassingbe Eyadema celebrating 12 years of Togolese independence in the capital city of Lome.
Present at the parade were Presidents Ahmadou Ahidjo of Cameroon, Sangoule Lamizane of Upper Volta, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam of Mautitius, Hubert Maga of Dahomey and Hamani Diori of Niger. All had been present at the recently concluded 6th meeting of the African and Malagasy Union.
Twenty thousand spectators watched the biggest military parade in Togolese history during which the armed forces displayed an array of West-German and French-made weapons, armoured cars, troop transporters, tanks and radio equipment.

Togo, officially the Togolese Republic (French: République togolaise), is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. The sovereign state extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital Lomé is located. Togo covers 57,000 square kilometres (22,008 square miles), making it one of the smallest countries in Africa, with a population of approximately 7.6 million.

L'indépendance du Togo confisquée par la dictature militaire et clanique [27/04/2012]
A l'occasion de la commémoration du 52ème anniversaire de l'accession du Togo à la souveraineté internationale, le Collectif « SAUVONS LE TOGO » avait organisé à une cérémonie symbolique de profession de foi à la place du Monument de l'Indépendance. Les manifestants ont été acceuillis par un important dispositif répressif de gendarmes qui, malgré les discussions avec les responsables du collectif puis avec le ministre de l'intérieur, n'ont pas hésité à user de gaz lacrymogène, matraques et même cailloux... pourchassant les manifestants jusqu'à la plage.
