Warsaw In Your Pocket - Nicholas Copernicus Monument
Warsaw In Your Pocket editor Alex Webber sitting on the steps of Nicholas Copernicus Monument (Pomnik Mikolaja Kopernika), the founder of modern astronomy. A sheltered academic, he made his observations a century before the invention of the telescope and without help or guidance. His book De Revolutionibus (1530) posited that the earth rotated on its axis once a day, travelled around the sun once a year, and that man's place in the cosmos was peripheral. This may seem obvious today, but it was an utterly radical idea at the time.

The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Kraków, Poland was designed by sculptor Cyprian Godebski in 1899 and completed in 1900. It has become a significant landmark of the city, as it commemorates one of the most famous alumni of the Jagiellonian University of Kraków.
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Renaissance scientist and scholar. His heliocentric model of the universe was revolutionary and contributed greatly to the emergence and development of modern science. He was an astronomer, mathematician, translator, physician, economist, and had a doctorate in canon law. A true polymath, or Renaissance man, whose life and work has become a part of cultural heritage of the world.
The 3D model features the monument of Copernicus wearing a purple bowtie. It was put on it as a part of an artistic happening organized by the University’s students to promote upcoming Juvenalia, a yearly student festival celebrating youth culture, freedom of expression and creativity.

Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473 - 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who formulated a heliocentric model of the universe which placed the Sun, rather than the Earth, at the center. The publication of Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, is considered a major event in the history of science. It began the Copernican Revolution and contributed importantly to the scientific revolution. Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, a region of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466. Copernicus had a doctorate in canon law and, though without degrees, was a physician, polyglot, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist who in 1517 set down a quantity theory of money, a principal concept in economics to the present day, and formulated a version of Gresham's law in the year 1519, before Gresham. Nicolaus Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473 in the city of Toruń (Thorn), in the province of Royal Prussia, in the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. His father was a merchant from Kraków and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy Toruń merchant. Nicolaus was the youngest of four children. His brother Andreas (Andrew) became an Augustinian canon at Frombork (Frauenburg). His sister Barbara, named after her mother, became a Benedictine nun and, in her final years, prioress of a convent in Chełmno (Kulm); she died after 1517. His sister Katharina married the businessman and Toruń city councilor Barthel Gertner and left five children, whom Copernicus looked after to the end of his life. Copernicus never married or had children.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Poland.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Poland was the only European country which never officially collaborated with the Nazis at any level, and no Polish units fought alongside the Nazi army. Poland never officially surrendered to Germany, and the Polish Resistance movement in German-occupied Poland during World War II was the largest resistance movement in Europe.
2. Marie Curie (Manya Sklodowska) was born in Warsaw (Warszawa), Poland, on November 7, 1867. She moved to Paris in early 1880 and married Frenchman Pierre Curie in 1895. With her husband, she discovered the elements polonium (Po), named after her native Poland, in the summer of 1898 and, soon thereafter, radium (Ra). She is credited for coining the term “radioactivity”.
Nicolaus Copernicus (Mikołaj Kopernik) was born in 1473 in Toruń (Thorn), Poland. he later wrote down in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium; its revolutionary contention was that the sun, not Earth, was the center of the planetary system. The work was published by church authorities in Nuremberg in 1543, the year Copernicus died.
In October 1978, the Bishop of Kraków, Poland, Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyla, became Pope John Paul II, the 264th head of the Roman Catholic Church on October 16, 1978 at 5:15 p.m.
Frédéric François Chopin (Fryderyk Franciszek Szopen), is Poland’s most famous composer. Chopin was born in Żelazowa Wola, Poland, in 1810.
3. Geographically, Poland is not actually in Eastern Europe – it is in fact in the very centre of Europe.
4. Nearly 35% of the 60 million Poles live abroad and large Polish speaking communities can be found in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Polish has the second largest number of speakers among the Slavic languages after Russian.
5. Poland has a desert: the Bledow Desert. It’s an oddity in such a lush countryside. In the 13th century, the forest here was felled to foster silver and lead mining. It revealed a hitherto hidden deep layer of sand, deposited by waters flowing from melting glaciers perhaps a century before. Humankind's destruction of native plant life, in league with the natural deposit of sand, created the desert.
6. Paradoxically, Warsaw’s Old Town is only 50 years old. During the Invasion of Poland (1939), much of the district was badly damaged by the German Luftwaffe. Immediately after the Warsaw Uprising (August–October 1944) what had been left standing was systematically blown up by the German Army. After World War II, the Old Town was meticulously rebuilt.
7. Some of the first shots fired during the WWII took place in Gdansk – Westerplatte. The first cannon shots of WW2 fell here from a German Battleship in the Baltic Sea. There is a monument there in honour of the Polish solders that stood for seven days against the German’s attack.

Inside the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw
Bonus video for Vlog #8 - Presenting to you the simple but serene interiors of the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw, near the Copernicus statue leading to the Nowy Swiat.
The Holy Cross Church has 2 hidden gems:
1. The big statue of Pope John Paul II
2. The heart of Frederick Chopin
We had to walk for several minutes to reach this simple church. One would not notice it much if you wouldn't look up on the staircase to chance upon the big statue of Christ bearing His cross. Luckily, we bumped into some friendly tourists who told us to specifically look for the Christ carrying the cross statue on the staircase/balcony area, almost in front of the Copernicus statue. Few minutes later, we found this simple church.
The Holy Cross Church is a Catholic Church located in the famous Krakowskie Przedmiescie just opposite the University of Warsaw and the Nicolaus Copernicus statue. It is a baroque church with a beautiful golden altar that will surely draw your eyes to wear it is.
The church dates back to the 15th century when it was still a wooden chapel. This church had been through many destruction. It was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1650 and was later rebuilt. Then it was destroyed again during the WWII and was again rebuilt after the war. For many Polish, this church has symbolized the fall of Warsaw and its rebuilt.
Many tourists had already flocked the church when we arrived. But we were very careful to draw attention to us nor make unnecessary noise since this is a functioning Catholic Church. And as Catholics, we came here to pray, and also check out the beautiful interiors and the hidden gems it holds.
One might wonder if it is true that Chopin's heart is buried in this church, it is indeed true. His heart was placed in an urn and kept behind the plaque on a particular pillar inside the church while his body was buried in Paris. This was Chopin's request before he passed away, knowing that his body would never come back to Poland. He wanted his heart to be buried in his beloved native Poland.
And on the left side as you enter the church, there is a big statue of St. John Paul II where you could pray and light candles for your intercessions. We also prayed in that area and offered our intercessions.
The Holy Cross Church is one of the prominent baroque churches in all of Poland. It is certainly worth visiting. However, please pay respects to those who are praying while inside the church.
