The Real Hacksaw Ridge Battleground Today | Okinawa, Japan
In today's vlog, The Lovelys visit the actual site of the infamous Hacksaw Ridge. Hacksaw Ridge is one of the battlegrounds within the Battle of Okinawa. This battle was known as one of the bloodiest battles ever, but specifically in the Pacific war during WWII. A man by the name of Desmond Doss singlehandedly saved 75 men at Hacksaw Ridge during the battle! Desmond Doss was a conscientious objector and never carried a weapon which is why his story is so incredibly heroic! Desmond Doss was awarded the medal of honor for all that he did during the battle of Okinawa.

Japan Trip: Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, World War II and Peace. Itoman,Okinawa25
Near the end of World WarII, Okinawa Island became the site of one of the war's bloodiest battles, when the US forces invaded and occupied the island. An estimated 200,000 people, including more than 100,000 civilians and 12,500 Americans were killed in the battle.
The devastating effects of the war had a deep impact on the local people. There are a number of monuments and museums relating to the period throughout Okinawa Island. The worst battle took place in the south, and that is where some of the larger monuments have been constructed.
Peace Memorial Museum, located in Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, gives a sobering overview of the lead up to the battle, the battle itself and the reconstruction of Okinawa.
Cornerstone of Peace
It’s a collection of large stone plates with the names of all fallen soldiers and civilians, including Koreans, Taiwanese, Americans and Britons.
Himeyuri Monument (Himeyuri no To)
. It commemorates the fate of female high school students, who worked in army field hospitals in caves under horrendous conditions. Most of them did not survive the war.
Former Navy Underground Headquarters
It consists of several hundred meters of underground corridors and rooms that served as the Japanese navy's headquarters during the war. A lot of sailors committed suicide in these tunnels, after their situation had grown hopeless towards the end of the battle.

JAPAN: G8 TALKS UPDATE
English/Nat
XFA
President Clinton and the leaders of the world's other big industrial nations are meeting at the G-Eight summit in Japan.
One focus of the summit is to ease the concerns of protesters who believe trade between the world's richest nations is hurting poorer nations.
In a speech shortly after his arrival, Clinton also addressed the concerns of Okinawans who are unhappy about the strong presence of U-S troops on the island.
The leaders of the world's seven wealthiest countries are meeting on Japan's warm southern Island of Okinawa.
U-S President Bill Clinton left coming to Okinawa as late as he could so as to help arrange an agreement at the difficult Camp David Middle East peace talks.
The world leaders have spent part of the day holding one-one-one talks before they begin their formal economic discussions.
The venue, a newly constructed conference center with a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean.
Economic discussions have been aimed at providing an answer to the critics of the current world architecture who complain that globalization is helping rich countries but leaving millions of the world's poor in deepening poverty.
But Clinton has other critics whose anger must be answered during his visit to Okinawa.
Many Okinawans are unhappy about America's huge military presence on this small island.
30,000 U-S servicemen and women are stationed on the island - their presence has been an enduring facet of life on Okinawa since the Second World War.
The island was under U-S control until it was returned to Japanese sovereignty in 1972.
Okinawa is strategically located near the Korean peninsula and Taiwan - and the U-S is loath to pull its forces of the small island for that reason.
This war memorial bears the names of over two hundred thousand soldiers and civilians who died in one of World War II's bloodiest battles.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The battle of Okinawa was warfare at its most tragic. But this monument built in its memory is humanity at its most inspired. For here, no grief goes unrecognised. And while most monuments remember only those who have fallen from one side, this memorial recognises those from all sides and those who took no sides. Therefore it is more than a war memorial. It is a monument to the tragedy of all war, reminding us our common responsibility to prevent such destruction from ever happening again.
SUPER CAPTION: U-S President Bill Clinton
He pledged to reduce our footprint on this island by continuing to implement 27-step process Japan and the United States agreed to five years ago to consolidate American bases on the island.
A small group of demonstrators shouting get rid of the bases was kept far away from the U.S. president Friday as he shook hands with veterans of the second world war fighting.
The G8 has held summits each year for the past 25 years.
This summit is the fourth summit Japan has hosted, and the first it has held outside of Tokyo.
Japanese officials are hoping the summit will put Okinawa on the international tourism map.
They are spending over 750 (m) million dollars on staging it and the world leaders seem to be appreciating the fruits.
Arriving later was Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He will join the others at a Friday night dinner.
Putin's will meet Clinton and talks are expected to focus on Russia's objections to the U-S's plans for a missile defense shield.

SUMMARY
=======
The Battle of Okinawa (Japanese: 沖縄戦, Hepburn: Okinawa-sen) (Okinawan: 沖縄戦, translit. Uchinaa ikusa), codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Marine and Army forces against the Imperial Japanese Army. The initial invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The 82-day battle lasted from April 1 until June 22, 1945. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were planning to use Kadena Air Base on the large island of Okinawa as a base for Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands, 340 mi (550 km) away.
The United States created the Tenth Army, a cross-branch force consisting of the 7th, 27th, 77th, and 96th infantry divisions of the US Army with the 1st, 2nd, and 6th divisions of the Marine Corps, to fight on the island. The Tenth was unique in that it had its own tactical air force (joint Army-Marine command), and was also supported by combined naval and amphibious forces.
The battle has been referred to as the typhoon of steel in English, and tetsu no ame (rain of steel) or tetsu no bōfū (violent wind of steel) in Japanese. The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of Japanese kamikaze attacks, and the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. The battle was one of the bloodiest in the Pacific, with approximately 160,000 casualties on both sides: at least 75,000 Allied and 84,166–117,000 Japanese, including drafted Okinawans wearing Japanese uniforms. 149,425 Okinawans were killed, committed suicide or went missing, a significant proportion of the estimated pre-war 300,000 local population. In the naval operations surrounding the battle, both sides lost considerable numbers of ships and aircraft, including the Japanese battleship Yamato. After the battle, Okinawa provided a fleet anchorage, troop staging areas, and airfields in proximity to Japan in preparation for the planned invasion.

渋谷(Shibuya)
Shibuya (渋谷区 Shibuya-ku) is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. A major commercial and business centre, it houses the two busiest railway stations in the world, Shinjuku Station (southern half) and Shibuya Station.
As of May 1, 2016, it has an estimated population of 221,801 and a population density of 14,679.09 people per km2 (38,018.7/sq mi). The total area is 15.11 km2 (5.83 sq mi).
The name Shibuya is also used to refer to the shopping district which surrounds Shibuya Station, one of Tokyo's busiest railway stations. This area is known as one of the fashion centers of Japan, particularly for young people, and as a major nightlife area.
Shibuya was historically the site of a castle in which the Shibuya family resided from the 11th century through the Edo period. Following the opening of the Yamanote Line in 1885, Shibuya began to emerge as a railway terminal for southwestern Tokyo and eventually as a major commercial and entertainment center.
The village of Shibuya was incorporated in 1889 by the merger of the villages of Kami-Shibuya, Naka-Shibuya and Shimo-Shibuya within Minami-Toshima County (Toyotama County from 1896). The village covered the territory of modern-day Shibuya Station area as well as the Hiroo, Daikanyama, Aoyama, and Ebisu areas. Shibuya became a town in 1909. The town of Shibuya merged with the neighboring towns of Sendagaya (which included the modern Sendagaya, Harajuku and Jingumae areas) and Yokohama (which included the modern Yoyogi and Hatagaya areas) to form Shibuya suburban ward of Tokyo-fu (outside of the central Tokyo City) in 1932. Tokyo-fu became Tokyo Metropolis in 1943, and the present-day Shibuya-ku was established as an urban special ward on March 15, 1947.
The Tokyu Toyoko Line opened in 1932, making Shibuya a key terminal between Tokyo and Yokohama, and was joined by the forerunner of the Keio Inokashira Line in 1933 and the forerunner of the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line in 1938. One of the best-known stories concerning Shibuya is the story of Hachikō, a dog who waited on his late master at Shibuya Station every day from 1923 to 1935, eventually becoming a national celebrity for his loyalty. A statue of Hachikō was built adjacent to the station, and the surrounding Hachikō Square is now the most popular meeting point in the area.
During the occupation of Japan, Yoyogi Park was used as a housing compound for U.S. personnel known as Washington Heights. The U.S. military left in 1964, and much of the park was repurposed as venues for the 1964 Summer Olympics. The ward itself served as part of the athletics 50 km walk and marathon course during the 1964 games.
Shibuya has achieved great popularity among young people since the early 1980s. There are several famous fashion department stores in Shibuya. Shibuya 109 is a major shopping center near Shibuya Station, particularly famous as the origin of the kogal subculture. Called Ichi-Maru-kyū, which translates as 1–0–9 in Japanese, the name is actually a pun on that of the corporation that owns it — Tōkyū (which sounds like 10–9 in Japanese; this is numerical substitution, a form of goroawase wordplay). The contemporary fashion scene in Shibuya extends northward from Shibuya Station to Harajuku, where youth culture reigns; Omotesandō, the zelkova tree- and fashion brand-lined street; and Sendagaya, Tokyo's apparel design district.
During the late 1990s, Shibuya also became known as the center of the IT industry in Japan. It was often called Bit Valley in English,[citation needed] a pun on both Bitter Valley, the literal translation of Shibuya, as well as bit, the computer term for binary digits.

Okinawa Prefecture (Japanese: 沖縄県, Hepburn: Okinawa-ken, Okinawan: ウチナー Uchinaa) is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It encompasses two thirds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long. The Ryukyu Islands extend southwest from Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu (the southwesternmost of Japan's four main islands) to Taiwan. Naha, Okinawa's capital, is located in the southern part of Okinawa Island.Although Okinawa Prefecture comprises just 0.6 percent of Japan's total land mass, about 75 percent of all United States military personnel stationed in Japan are assigned to installations in the prefecture. Currently about 26,000 U.S. troops are based in the prefecture.
DAKSHINESWAR MA SARODA TEMPLE
Dakshineswar Kali Temple (Bengali: দক্ষিনেশ্বর কালী মন্দির Dokkhineshshôr Kali Mondir, Sanskrit: दक्षिणेश्वर काली मन्दिर) is a Hindu temple located in Dakshineswar near Kolkata. Situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the presiding deity of the temple is Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali, meaning, 'She who liberates Her devotees from the ocean of existence i.e. Saṃsāra'.[1] The temple was built by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali in 1855. The temple is famous for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of 19th Century Bengal.
The temple compound, apart from the nine-spired main temple, contains a large courtyard surrounding the temple, with rooms along the boundary walls. There are twelve shrines dedicated to Shiva—Kali's companion—along the riverfront, a temple to Radha-Krishna, a bathing ghat on the river, a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni. 'Nahavat-Khana', the chamber in the northwestern corner just beyond the last of the Shiva temples, is where Ramakrishna spent a considerable part of his life.
The Dakshineswar Kali Temple was founded around the middle of the 19th Century by Rani Rashmoni.[5] Rani Rashmoni belonged to Kaivarta caste[6] and was well known for her philanthropic activities. In the year 1847, Rashmoni, prepared to go upon a long pilgrimage to the sacred Hindu city of Kashi to express her devotions to the Divine Mother. Rani was to travel in twenty four boats, carrying relatives, servants and supplies.[4] According to traditional accounts, the night before the pilgrimage began, Rashmoni had a vision of the Divine Mother, in the form of the goddess Kali in a dream and reportedly said,[7]
“ There is no need to go to Banaras. Install my statue in a beautiful temple on the banks of the Ganges river and arrange for my worship there. Then I shall manifest myself in the image and accept worship at that place. ”
Profoundly affected by the dream, Rani immediately looked for and purchased a 20-acred plot in the village of Dakshineswar. The large temple complex was built between 1847 and 1855. The 20-acre (81,000 m2) plot was bought from an Englishman, John Hastie and was then popularly known as Saheban Bagicha, partly old Muslim burial ground shaped like a tortoise, considered befitting for the worship of Shakti according to Tantra traditions, it took eight years and nine hundred thousand rupees to complete the construction, and finally the idol of Goddess Kali was installed on the Snana Yatra day on 31 May 1855, amid festivities at the temple formally known as Sri Sri Jagadishwari Mahakali, with Ramkumar Chhattopadhyay as the head priest; soon his younger brother Gadai or Gadadhar (later known as Ramakrishna) moved in and so did nephew Hriday to assist him. On 31 May 1855 more than 1 lakh Brahmins were invited from different parts of the country to grace the auspicious occasion. The next year, Ramkumar Chhattopadhyay died, the position was given to Ramakrishna, along with his wife Sarada Devi, who stayed in the south side of the Nahabat (music room), in a small room on the ground floor, which now a shrine dedicated to her.
From then until his death 30 years later in 1886, Ramakrishna was responsible for bringing much in the way of both fame and pilgrims to the temple.
Built in the traditional 'Nava-ratna' or nine spires style of Bengal architecture, the three-storeyed south-facing temple has nine spires distributed in upper two storeys, and stands on a high platform with a flight of stairs, overall it measures 46 feet (14 m) square and rises over 100 feet (30 m) high.
The garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) houses an idol of goddess Kali, known as Bhavataraini, standing on the chest of a lying Shiva, and the two idols are placed on a thousand-petaled lotus made of silver.
Close to the main temple are the row of twelve identical Shiva temples built facing the east in the typical ‘Aat Chala’ Bengal architecture, they are built on either side of the ghat on the Hoogly river. To the North east of the Temple Complex is the Vishnu Temple or the Radha Kanta’s Temple. A flight of steps lead to the columned verandah and into the temple where a silver throne rests with a 21 1⁄2-inch (550 mm) idol of Lord Krishna and a 16-inch (410 mm) idol of Radha.

SUMMARY
=======
The Battle of Okinawa (Japanese: 沖縄戦, Hepburn: Okinawa-sen) (Okinawan: 沖縄戦, romanized: Uchinaa ikusa), codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Marine and Army forces against the Imperial Japanese Army.
After the battle, Okinawa provided a fleet anchorage, troop staging areas, and airfields in proximity to Japan in preparation for a planned invasion.

A day in Kagoshima
In southern-most Japan lies a port named Kagoshima, which is a bit sooty because of an active volcano on one side of the harbor. Our visit to Kagoshima lasted only a day but the impressions are of longer duration. Here are treats for your eyes: a lovely Japanese garden, beautiful cut-glass (a specialty of this place) and some glimpses of the Sakorajima volcano itself. Condition #3 prevails, which means the volcano is not safe to walk on, so we view it from a distance.
