European Heritage Label - Historic Ensemble of the University of Tartu
The European Heritage Label goes to cultural heritage sites important to the history of the EU as a whole. European Heritage Label sites are also recognised for highlighting this European context, ensuring access for the public and organising awareness-raising activities.
The Historic Ensemble of the University of Tartu in Estonia was selected for the European Heritage Label in 2016. The historic ensemble of the University of Tartu is a campus designed at the beginning of the nineteenth century under the motto A university in the city, a university in the park. It embodies the ideas of a university in the Age of Enlightenment. Linking science and learning and reflects the European tradition in education.
Established in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf, and though it changed hands between the various political powers in the region including Sweden, Poland, Germany, Russia, the Soviet Union and Estonia, Tartu University has always remained a beacon of progressive ideas.
