Wooden architecture in Irkutks:
Irkutsk has the biggest range of 19th century wooden architecture in Siberia. Out of all Siberian towns, only Irkutsk and Tobolsk have preserved their historic face. Wooden houses can be found in the centre of Irkutsk. If you walk 500m from Lenin's monument down Lenin street towards Krestovozdvizhenskaia church, you will reach the old part of Irkutsk with its characteristic wooden architecture. Timiriazeva, Podgornaia and Lapina streets are some of the streets near the church not destroyed by the 1879 fire.
THE HOUSE OF THE SHASTINS
Engelsa, 21.
The house was built at the end of the 19th century and is better known as the 'Kruzhevnoi dom' ('the lacy house'). In 1999 a complete restoration of the Shastins' homestead was completed – the building now accommodates representatives of the House of Europe.
SUKACHEVA'S HOMESTEAD
On the corner of ulitsa Dekabrskikh Sobitii and ulitsa Sovetskaia.
The homestead was built at the end of the 19th century and consists of several wooden houses. The old home of V.P.Sukachev was converted into an art gallery and his collection is now the core of the main exhibition at the Irkutsk Art Museum. Also on site are the buildings of the girls' school which Sukachev built, funded and maintained, the servants' houses, and the stable. The house where Vladimir Platonovich and his family lived has been replaced by a tank. The homestead is currently undergoing restoration.

Siberia Drone Flight: Siberia is a vast Russian province encompassing most of Northern Asia, with terrain spanning tundra, coniferous forest and mountain ranges including the Ural, Altai and Verkhoyansk. Lake Baikal, in its south, is the worlds deepest lake, circled by a network of hiking paths called the Great Baikal Trail. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes Baikal on its route between Moscow and the Sea of Japan. Lake Baikals largest island, Olkhon, is a center of shamanism marked by Shaman Rock, an outcropping held sacred by indigenous islanders. The city of Irkutsk, the western gateway to Baikal, offers classical Russian architecture and Russian Orthodox churches. The Altai Mountains are river-rafting and mountaineering destinations with diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The Siberian Traps, a region of stairlike hills formed by ancient volcanoes, include Putorana Nature Reserve, which protects lakes and animals like reindeer and snow sheep. Novosibirsk, Siberias largest city, houses wood-lace buildings and the State Art Museum. // Irkutsk is a city on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. The river embankment is lined with hurches, including the Epiphany Cathedral (Sobor Bogoyavleniya), with gilded onion domes, and the Spasskaya Church, with its soaring bell tower. The restored neoclassical Moskovskie Vorota arch is also by the water. Near Kirov Square, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum has ancient icons and more recent Russian artworks. // Ulan-Ude is a city in East Siberia, Russia. The main square Ploshchad Sovetov is home to the huge Lenin Head Monument. The City History Museum is set within the former house of a tea merchant. Nearby is the 18th-century Odigitrievsky Cathedral. To the north, Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha is a Buddhist temple with gilded stupas and sweeping city views. The outdoor Ethnographic Museum displays traditional Buryat wooden yurts. [wikipedia // Google]

Russian monuments
A monument to a mother – In – law as people jokingly called it. It’s an exact copy of Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was placed in 1989 as the symbol of Tula’s exotarium. Exotarium is the zoo of reptiles and amphibians. . People love this dinosaur and they dress it in different funny clothes. And in this exotarium there is the unique in Russia – serpentarium. It’s the place where biologists try to breed and revive disappearing kinds of snakes . парк йюрк
A monument to Leo Tolstoy – a famous Russian writer. Everybody knows his famous “War and Peace”. This monument is located in Tolstoy’s square. And in front of him there is a liquor factory and that’s why people called this monument “Leo Tolstoy is going to buy vodka”.
This is the monument to a tail. ‘Tails’ students call their “educational arrears”. It means if you failed the exam, you have one more chance to take it and pass it. This monument was placed in 2007. Many students come here every day when they have exams. They bring coopers and rub this lizard to take a little luck on exam.
This is the monument to Tula’s honey cake. Tula’s factory of the production of honey cakes is famous all over Russia. It’s two meters high and weighs more than a ton. Of course you can not taste this honey cake but you can take couple pictures with it and touch the history.
The monument to Demidov.
Demidov was Russian industrialist who founded the Demidov industrial dynasty. Nikita built one of the first metallurgical factories in Tula. Except for this monument which was installed in 1996, a museum is devoted to him in Tula. And people called this monument “Rambo”, I hope you guessed why.
“Levsha and steel flea” is a well-known story by Nickolay Leskov. It tells us about left-handed craftsman, who outperformed his English colleagues by providing a clockwork steel flea they’d made with horseshoes.
This is the monument to Vladimir Lenin – the leader of Soviet people. Every city and town and village in Russia has such kind of monument from the Soviet Union. All Soviet pupils knew: “Lenin lived, Lenin is alive, Lenin will live forever!” Of course now these monuments are just a part of history that’s why people don’t dismantle them.

I asked this guy What is the #1 issue in the world?
Global warming
and the need to build 100-panel solar homes
to stop the climate meltdown.
Then he sang this song for me.
We are in Russia, Mongolia & China looking at the explosive growth of windmills along the Trans Siberian Railroad.
This is the first real step to stopping global warming.
Ask not what your government can do for you.
Ask what,...
and that What is you can really build a 100-panel solar home.
Atomic energy is dead.
Put the solar home before the e-car.
Building 100-panel solar homes creates millions of local jobs
that cannot be off-shored,
like building 100-panel solar homes does.
Best way to ban fracking is to build 100-panel solar homes.
Pre-fabricated solar homes.
The income from solar in Maine ( $0.33 kwh )
pays off the cost of a solar home in 20 years,
if you have 100 solar panels.

Vladivostok - Moscow (May 17 - June 2, 2016)
Vladivostok to Moscow. --- Trans-Siberian Railway Trip, May 17 to June 2, 2016
Our journey started from Vladivostok. Yul Brynner who stared in The King and I was born here; His statue is in front of the house he was born.
The second stop was Irkutsk. The city's old quarter reminded me the scenes from the movie Doctor Zhivago with it's traditional wooden houses and the old trams. As an admirer of the Decembrists and their women, we visited Volkonsky and Trubestskoy's houses. One could tell the owners lived rather extravagant life during their time in the houses. White Army Admiral Alexander Kolchak's statue stands in front of Znamensky Monastery, at the spot he was executed. The monastery also has tomb of Grigory Shelekhov, who claimed Alaska for Russia, and that of the Decembrist wife Ekaterina Trubetskaya.
From Irkutsk, we reached to Lake Baikal via Listvyanka; The amazing beauty of this Lake has to be seen to believe!
Moving on from Irkutsk, the train stopped at Novosibirsk for about 50 minutes, just enough time to taxi to the city center to see the dramatic Lenin statue with flowing cloak.
The industrial city Yekaterinburg is famous for the Cathedral on the Blood, which was built at the location the last Tsar and his family were murdered. We took a local train and then walked for about 40 minutes, along a beautiful, primeval forest, to get to Ganina Yama, visiting the site the bodies of the Romanov family were secretly disposed of originally.
Next, we stopped at Kazan. Ivan the Terrible conquered the Tatars' capital in 1552. Russia's icon, the St. Basil's Cathedral of Moscow was built to commemorate the capture of Kazan. Like Yekaterinburg, Kazan is a financially well to do city compared with other places we visited along the route.
Another over night train took us to Nizhny Novgorod, which was the first of the six golden ring cities we visited during the trip: Nizhny Novgorod, Vladmir, Suzdal, Rostov-Velikiy, Sergiev Posad and Yaroslavl. Rostov-Velikiy is my favorite. It has an unparalleled view of the Kremlin from lake Nero. We also witnessed a Sunday church parade and a Mass in Rostov. Suzdal stands out as an unspoiled village town. Nizhny and Yaroslavl are actually very large cities, their top attractions are the peaceful and scenic river sides. Vladmire and Sergiev Posad both have some most photogenic scenes.
We saved Moscow for the last. Indeed, Moscow proves to be worthy of the capital of Russia! There are simply too many fascinating things to see! The metro is handy, on top of the fact itself is a bona-fide museum.
We visited many Orthodox churches during the trip. Many have magnificent interior. The choral music were serene, peaceful and simply amazing!
The monuments in the country are many. Don't miss Victory park, and all-Russia exhibition center, both of Moscow. The monuments in these two locations are just awe inspiring!
We took the west bound trains for the journey. The east bound direction is more popular with leisure travelers. We had to change trains in each location mentioned above except Novosibirsk. Long distance tickets were either purchased ahead of time ( or at the time of travel in the station. Mid to late May is the shoulder season, it's relatively easy to get train tickets. Local train tickets were easily bought on site.
Train station in big cities usually has resting room with single/double/dorm types and clean linen, charged by the hour. We stayed in such a resting room in Irkutsk as we got there in the early morning. The room was clean, quite and rather spacious.
In May of 2009, I visited Saint Petersburg. Please see the video for the visit:

Lenin Square, Novosibirsk, Novosibirsk Oblast, Siberia, Russian Federation, Asia
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known by the alias Lenin (22 April 1870–21 January 1924), was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician and political theorist. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, he developed political theories known as Leninism. Born to a wealthy middle-class family in Simbirsk, Lenin embraced revolutionary socialist politics following his brother's 1887 execution. Expelled from Kazan Imperial University for participating in protests against the Russian Empire's Tsarist government, he devoted the following years to a law degree. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1893 and became a senior Marxist activist. In 1897, he was arrested for sedition and exiled to Shushenskoye for three years, where he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After his exile, he moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent theorist in the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). In 1903, he took a key role in a RSDLP ideological split, leading the Bolshevik faction against Julius Martov's Mensheviks. Encouraging insurrection during Russia's failed Revolution of 1905, he later campaigned for the First World War to be transformed into a Europe-wide proletarian revolution, which as a Marxist he believed would cause the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement with socialism. After the 1917 February Revolution ousted the Tsar and established a Provisional Government, he returned to Russia to play a leading role in the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the new regime. Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, elected soviets, and a multi-party Constituent Assembly, although by 1918 it had centralised power in the new Communist Party. Lenin's administration redistributed land among the peasantry and nationalised banks and large-scale industry. It withdrew from the First World War by signing a treaty with the Central Powers and promoted world revolution through the Communist International. Opponents were suppressed in the Red Terror, a violent campaign administered by the state security services; tens of thousands were killed or interned in concentration camps. His administration defeated right and left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922 and oversaw the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–1921. Responding to wartime devastation, famine, and popular uprisings, in 1921 Lenin encouraged economic growth through the market-oriented New Economic Policy. Several non-Russian nations secured independence after 1917, but three re-united with Russia through the formation of the Soviet Union in 1922. In increasingly poor health, Lenin expressed opposition to the growing power of his successor, Joseph Stalin, before dying at his dacha in Gorki. Widely considered one of the most significant and influential figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the posthumous subject of a pervasive personality cult within the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. He became an ideological figurehead behind Marxism–Leninism and thus a prominent influence over the international communist movement. A controversial and highly divisive individual, Lenin is viewed by supporters as a champion of socialism and the working class, while critics on both the left and right emphasize his role as founder and leader of an authoritarian regime responsible for political repression and mass killings.
(V) RUSSIA: STATUE UNVEILED
Russian/Nat
VOICED BY: RICHARD VAUGHAN
Russian nationalists, monarchists and fascist right wing supporters gathered at the unveiling of a monument to the country's last Tsar, Nicholas II, near Moscow on Saturday.
An orthodox priest led the diverse grouping of worshippers in a ceremony before unveiling the seven metre high statue.
The new monument will be guarded around the clock after similar stautes of the Tsar were recently blown up by left wing activists.
00:01
In a peaceful setting outside a church near Moscow, the latest statue of the imperal Tsar Nicholas the II ia about to be unveiled.
00:10
On Saturday, those faithful to the Tsar's memory, gathered for a Russian orthodox ceremony to mark the occasion.
00:17
Despite its communist past, there are many in Russia who remain devoted to the Imperial family. The family was murdered by Bolshevik revolutionaries in July 1918.
00:27
But nostalgia for the days of the Tsar is not popular with left wing activists, who have been blamed in recent times for blowing up two statues.
00:36
The new statue will be guarded by cossacks and members of the neo-fascist Russian National Unity movement.
Cast in bronze, it stands seven metres high.
00:44
Supporters are determined this should be a lasting monument to Tsar Nicholas, whose image was banned from display under communist rule.
00:53
UPSOUND (Russian)
The Tsar is power itself - he says, Order, Orthodox belief. For any Russian person the Tsar is a symbol of freedom and power.
01:03
Monarchist groups hope the statue will attract many visitors to the Church of Nicholas the Martyr and help their campaign to make Nicholas a saint.

I think that this visit will be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records because it is the longest trip ever undertaken by a head of a foreign state on the territory of another state - from Lake Khasan to St. Petersburg and back.

The Korean side made the decisions about transportation. They explained it (their decision) by security measures as well as a number of other factors. The first one being that there is a huge difference between seeing a country from a airplane and seeing it from the window of a train with stops and visits.

STORYLINE:
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has been keeping a low profile on his marathon journey across Russia.
He is only half way through his trans-Siberian train trek, which winds up in Moscow on August 4th and 5th for an official meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
His 21-car olive-green train crossed into Russia on July 26th in the town of Khasan where Kim was greeted by Russian officials.
However, the press entourage following the North Korean leader have had a hard time spotting him since the first official meeting.
Hours after crossing the Russian boarder, Kim's train passed through a town of Ussurisky in Far East Russia.
Kim, who is rumoured to hate flying, is taking the Trans-Siberian railroad across Russia for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
The first stop in Russia was in the town of Khabarovsk on July 27th, however Kim did not emerge on the local railway station.
On Sunday, the bullet-prove train, that is surrounded by rifle-toting Russian security agents, made three stops.
The earlier visit was in the town of Ulan-Ude, where once again North Korean leader chose to be unseen.
His two previous trips to China were conducted in similar secrecy, and one was announced only after he had returned.
Later, Kim stepped off the train for a look at world's largest Lake Baikal.
The train stopped at lakeside town of Slyudyanka where he touched the water.
Kim's next destination was the town of Irkutsk where engines and crew where changed while Kim remained inside.
In Irkutsk, Igor Kolomiets, the press secretary for the Kremlin regional administration, said that the Korean side insisted on travelling by train because provided a greater opportunity to see Russia and to stop in interesting places.
The next stop of Kim's third foreign trip is expected Tuesday in town of Omsk, Western Siberia.
Local officials are preparing to greet the North Korean guest with a military band, a folk ensemble, and a visit to a local factory.
