range of Tien-Shan, or Zhetysu (Seven Rivers), as it is called by the local residents. This is a unique place. In ancient times Zhetysu was a crossroad of many trade and military routes.
The most northern mountain range of Kazakhstan’s Tien- Shan is the Trans-Ili Alatau. Its length is 400 km. The most popular climbing routes in the Trans-Ili Alatau are located in the Valley Malyi Almaty and Bogdanovich glacier. The main attractions are: Pogrebetsky Glacier (4231 m), passes - Tuyuk Su (4100 m), Ordzhonikidze (3980 m), Komsomol (4000 m), Manshuk Mametova (3,750 m), the peaks - Locomotive (4182 m), Amangeldy (4,000 m), Abay (4010 m), Shkolnik (3590 m) and others.
Kazakhstan is a country with a unique culture and rich historical past, so it is obvious that Ethno tourism is developing there. Almost every corner of the republic will be interesting to those, who want to study and experience traditions, customs, art and culture ot the Kazakh people. For example: one of the most significant attractions of Zhambyl oblast is Berkara Gorge, located in the Berkary state natural reserve. There are 504 mounds in the valley, four of which, according to the historians, are dated back to ancient Saka period. Besides, they say, that once Genghis Khan stayed with his numerous army in the territory of the modern Berkary reserve. In Almaty oblast, there is the Museum complex of Zhambyl Zhabayev, which includes: the house that once belonged to the poet, a garage and a garden, and an administrative building. Besides, there is Zh. Zhabayev’s mausoleum in the museum complex.
Due to the work of the museum specialists, the poet’s home and all the things, that belonged to the poet are intact.
In general, we can say that the monument shows not only the life of the poet Zhambyl, but the era in which he lived and worked. In addition to the specific historical monuments, characterizing the Kazakh people’s life, there are many so- called ethnographic parks in some cities of the country; the largest of which is the Ethno complex «The Map of Kazakhstan
«Atamekem», located in Astana. «Atameken» is a unique open-air museum. There are 14 provinces and 2 cities - Astana and Almaty - on the map. Climate zones and landscapes of the country, as well as the miniatures of the major municipal attractions and historical sites of Kazakhstan are displayed there. The territory of the ethno-memorial complex is 1.7 hectares.
Another direction of the country’s tourism industry is the water activities, that have been developing within the recent years. Kazakhstan is not only the steppe region, it is also a land of rivers and lakes. The largest number of reservoirs is concentrated in the south-east of the country in the Zhetysu - Seven Rivers region.
Almost all the Zhetysu Rivers belong to the basin of the Balkhash Lake. The very popular among them (for local and foreign tourists) are: Ili, Charyn, Koksu, Karatal and Chilik. The Ili is formed by the two rivers - Tekes (Kazakhstan) and Kunges (China). It originates in the Chinese mountains, flows through Kazakhstan (the length of the Kazakh section of the river is 815 km) and goes into the Balkhash Lake. The Ili is the third river in Kazakhstan (in volume), after the world known Irtysh and Ural. Charyn is a full-flowing and tumultuous river. The reservoir is fed by many small branches and one large inflowing stream Temerlik. The river has several groups of rapids -
«Munay cascades», «Toothbrush», «Tau-Teke», «Saigak» and
«Armadillo». In the area of Kuluktay mountains, Charyn flows through the canyon, the depth of which is about 400 meters. Koks originates from Baskan glacier, located in the north- western slope of Jungar Alatau, The upper part of the valley of the river is rocky.
The maximum river flow rate is 37 meters per second (the area of the Koks farm). A rafting program has been developed there for tourists.
Chilik is the largest river in the Trans - Ili-Alatau. Its estuary is located in the eastern slope of the Mount Chilik Kemin (height - 3 350 m). Running to the lake Bartogai, the Chilik river overcomes the Zhalanash Valley, the Upper, Blue and Bartogai canyons. Chilik is a typical mountain and tumultuous river. The channel’s width at the top is 5-6 m, in the middle - 10-15 meters, maximum depth is 1.5-2 meters.
In 2011 Kazakhstan hosted the winter Asian Games. Selection of Astana as a hosting city of the Aziada was not accidental, since one of the priorities in the country was and is promotion of winter
26. GATOB State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet
It is the oldest theater in the country. It has taken its residence in this building in 1941 (architects N. Kruglov, N. Prostakov), although its repertoire life had begun earlier in 1934. The first musical performance was Aiman-Sholpan as per libretto of M.O. Auezov. The Swan Lake of P.I. Tchaikovsky marked the beginning of the ballet company in 1938. The fate of the building was not easy. Its construction started in 1936, and a year later the unfinished building burned. Newly rebuilt, it represents the birth of the original architecture of the national style. Natalia Sats, the well-known Director of the theatre, noted that people who built the theatre were familiar with Italian architecture, but fell in love with Eastern ornaments, and gave a surprisingly complex chord to the building. Its monumental forms and colonnaded portico attract people’s attention. Zhambyl with a group of people is in the center of the bas-relief. Those people represent the allegory of musical creativity and fertility. There are scenes of the Kazakh heroic epics and the scenes of the period of Civil war around. The artistic ornaments on the walls, ceilings, columns and interior were made in the national style. The scene of the theater keeps memories of such luminaries of the opera and ballet of Kazakhstan as Kuliash Baiseitova, Ermek Serkebayev, Rosa Dzhamanova, Ramazan Bapov. There are squares, monuments, busts of Mukhtar Auezov and Zhambyl Zhabayev along the both sides of the building. Cosy squares, beautiful fountains and monuments create a unique atmosphere and preserve the charm of the old center of Almaty.
