Bosnian Serbs unveil Russian mercenary monument
(12 Apr 2017) Bosnian Serbs have erected a monument to Russian mercenaries who were killed while fighting alongside their forces during the Balkan country's brutal 1992-95 war.
The 5.5 metre (18 feet) high monument was unveiled on Wednesday on a hill overlooking the eastern town of Visegrad in the presence of Bosnian Serb war veterans and some of the surviving Russian mercenaries.
Bosnian Serb authorities say 37 Russian mercenaries were killed while fighting in Bosnia, seven of them in Visegrad.
Visegrad was the site of some of the most gruesome atrocities committed by Serbs during the conflict, including barricading scores of Muslim Bosniak civilians in private houses in the town and burning them alive and imprisoning and repeatedly raping women and girls, some as young as 14.
By the end of the war, after 3,000 were killed and others expelled, there were no Muslim Bosniaks left in Visegrad. Before, they accounted for two-thirds of a population of 25,000.
A small number of survivors who have since returned to the town protested against the monument, saying it was an award for the killing of innocent victims.

Remembering Russian Paratroopers Who Foiled NATO Plans to Invade Serbia Twenty Years Ago!
Subscribe to Vesti News
20 years ago, Russian paratroopers made a 600-kilometer march from Bosnia to Pristina, taking the Slatina airport shortly before NATO troops were deployed there. The operation came as a complete surprise to NATO and allowed Moscow to deploy its peacekeepers in the north of Kosovo. On June 12, the province celebrated two events. While the authorities of the breakaway republic were honoring Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright, Serbian enclaves were recalling how they met the Russian convoy.
Serbia: Monument to Nikola Tesla unveiled in Belgrade on scientist’s 160th birthday
A monument to Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla was unveiled in front of the St. Sava Temple in Belgrade on Sunday, commemorating what would be his 160th birthday.
The monument is made up of a statue of the ground-breaking scientist, with Tesla's signature, and the formula for magnetic field strength carved at the base.
SOT, Tomislav Nikolic, President of the Republic of Serbia (Serbian): Creating, Tesla gave to mankind one more dimension which is hardly mentioned or not at all: a new philosophy of life, a new understanding of human possibilities, a new development of societies, the states and the whole world; a new, previously unknown ability to create different, individual, everyday life.
SOT, Tomislav Nikolic, President of the Republic of Serbia (Serbian): His contribution to mankind is reaching mythical proportions: He tamed the waterfalls, he fulfilled Biblical task to be a light in the dark, he gave us innovation which are the base today for everything that once was the domain of fiction and fantasy: space travel, television, Internet, telecommunications , medical equipment. In this mythical dimension, he became the Prometheus of a new era. He granted the light and progress to humans, accepting his personal sacrifice and loneliness, without a word, which every genius carries as his own.
SOT, Tomislav Nikolic, President of the Republic of Serbia (Serbian): Born as a Serb, died as American, Tesla became yet another historical knot which should connect destinies and friendship of our counties and our people.

God Save the Tsar sung here by The Choir of the
St. Peter and St. Paul in Minsk
....The solemn opening of the monument in the presence of representatives of all classes and members of the imperial family was held on May 30, 1912. At 8 o'clock in the morning five cannon shots sounded from the Taynitskaya tower. At 10 o'clock at the entrance to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour began a procession led by the Moscow Metropolitan Vladimir, Emperor Nicholas II, his mother Maria Fedorovna and wife Alexandra Fedorovna. After 360 celebration canon shots and the singing of the Preobrazhensky march, a veil was removed from the sculpture. Metropolitan Vladimir sprinkled the monument with holy water and proclaimed many years to the Russian army and loyal subject. 86 wreaths were laid on the monument, including wreaths from 80 Russian and foreign deputations. After inspecting the monument by members of the imperial family, the deputy chairman of the committee on the construction of the monument was informed by the chamberlain Alexander Bulygin to read the text of the act on the transfer of the monument to the Moscow city government. In the evening, the city and the sculpture were illuminated. At the sculpture there were laced a guard of honour made up of the war veterans......
....Made in the style of monumental realism, a bronze statue stood on a stepped red granite pedestal facing the Moscow River. The guardian portrayed the king sitting on a throne in a mantle with an imperial crown on his head. In the hands of Alexander III lay the scepter and orb.
The inscription on the pedestal read: “To the pious, Autocratic Great Sovereign, our emperor Alexander Alexandrovich of All Russia. 1881-1894. In its corners stood bronze double-headed eagles with outstretched wings by sculptor Artemy Auber. The monument was located low granite balustrade, designed by Alexander Pomerantsev, down the stairs from the monument to the river.
Contemporaries criticised the monument for excessive monumentality.
In the 1917 edition of the Moscow Guidebook, the monument was described as “too huge and heavy, featuring an extraordinary amount and richness of material spent on its construction”.
The monument was destroyed in 1918.....

Serbia and Russia - Orthodox Brothers
“Long may live brotherly Serbia.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the military parade held in Belgrade to celebrate 70 years since the liberation of Belgrade in World War II was an opportunity to express pride about and gratitude to war veterans, but also to strive to prove worthy of their accomplishments and glory.
The anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade is an opportunity to pay homage to everyone who fought against the Nazis on all fronts. Our fathers and grandfathers fought for the right cause and showed courage on all fronts. Their courage was without limits, they cherished an unbreakable feeling of brotherhood and the state of their spirit transcended everything. We are united by common deep memories at the parade here today,” Putin said. The Soviet Union, he said, played the key role in the victory over fascism. But we will never divide the victory saying this is ours and that is others’ victory or forget our allies in the anti-Hitler coalition, Putin said and urged for preventing attempts to revise history.
