Fairbanks' Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitor Center
Alaska Day 64 Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center
Trying to stay out of the smoke in Fairbanks, so today we went to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center. They have a small, but very well done, display of various aspects of Alaska. They also had a lot of good information of other things to do around Fairbanks.

Fairbanks | Alaska | A Winter Adventure
8 days with a rental car exploring the Fairbanks area. Our trip was March 23rd-30th 2019. Some places visited: Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, dog sledding with Black Spruce Dog Sledding, Running Reindeer Ranch, Aurora Ice Museum, Museum of the North, Pioneer Park, Tanana Valley Railroad Museum, Pioneer Air Museum, Denali National Park (we could only go the first 3 miles into the park, as the road is closed in the winter season, we did not see Mt Denali), Silver Gulch Brewery- the Northern most brewery in North America, Creamer's Field, Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor's Center, we rented snowshoes from Alaska Element, Santa Claus House in North Pole, the world's largest Santa statue, Fairbanks Community Museum, Chena Hot Springs (we opted to not get in as it was very crowded), Ice Alaska - world's ice carving championships at Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds- we arrived on the last day it was open so the ice statues were pretty melted, Alaska Pipeline Viewing Point, snowmobiling with Rod's Alaskan Guide Service. Only one night of our trip had a high rating for Aurora activity but it was very cloudy, so we could not see the Northern Lights :( :( It's ok, we got to see them in Iceland!

Alaska 2015: Historic Heritage House B&B in Fairbanks
Great value. Clean, cozy, comfortable -- The Alaska Heritage House Bed and Breakfast is a charming place to stay and within walking distance to many interesting places in downtown Fairbanks. Van, Bill and their cute lil' doggy, Mable, make guests feel welcome and happy.
After a delicious breakfast in a family-style setting, complete with china on doilies and a house full of period piece antiques from the early 1900's, take a tour through the multi-level home, appreciate the ambiance, art, and decor; sit by the fireplace or one of the many windows and enjoy reading a garden book or Alaskan novel.
Take a five-minute walk and check out the Jade Boutique for vintage treasures, or a delicious lunch/dinner at Big Daddy's BBQ restaurant or the yummy Thai Noodle restaurant. Bobby's Downtown is an impressive Greek restaurant and bar. There are several karaoke bars.
It's a nice walk to the visitor center along the Chena River near the Marriott Hotel, and the new Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center near the Marriott.
There are plenty of antique and gift shops, a Co-op Plaza with lots of nice stores including the Two Street Gallery and a full menu Crepery. The Ice Museum is closed until May, and the Art House Gallery on Cushman & 10th near the bus station is well worth a visit.
And in the opposite direction down Cowles from the Heritage House is the 9th Ave. Hostel where the northern lights can sometimes be seen, a central bus station for trips to the Santa Claus House, North Pole, University of Alaska Museum of the North, etc. About a 15-minute walk further down Cowles is a full service camera store in the strip mall by the gym.
If you opt for a rental car in winter, try to book a vehicle with snow tires.
Enjoy! There's much to see and do :)

Alaska 2018 - 11 [Summer Solstice from Fairbanks, Alaska & Chena Hot Springs]
Summer Solstice post from Fairbanks, Alaska. The intro was recorded at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitor Center.
Hanging out in Fairbanks
We’ve been camping at Walmart. It can be a little noisy but otherwise, we haven’t had any problems.
We’ve hit up Lunch Cafe ( a few times now. They’ve got lots of vegan options so we highly recommend checking them out. Go for brunch if you can.
The Co-op here is excellent. We’ve been there a few times as well. They have organic produce, vegan yogurt, cheese, and meats, bulk bins to restock, and environmentally friendly household products.
The Walmart is fine and we pick up things here from time to time since we’re living in their lot. But the Fred Meyer behind it seems to have better prices on most of the groceries we buy.
We met some viewers, Tom and Fay, at Walmart - they’re our neighbors. We’ve been hanging out with them off and on during our stay. They’ve got some great RV stories.
Side trip to Chena Hot Springs (
It’s no secret that we love hot springs so we decided to leave Fairbanks and spend the weekend at Chena Hot Springs. It’s only about 60 miles from Fairbanks. About half that road is full of frost heaves though so be prepared for a bumpy ride.
The Chena Hot Springs Resort is a whole complex. We were there for the hot springs, which had some of the best water we’ve experienced, but there are loads of other things to do there. In addition to the hot springs, they have an indoor heated salt water pool and two hot tubs. The pool was filled with kids when we were there. The hot springs are 18+.
There are several trails on the property. We walked out to Beaver Pond and also followed the Monument Creek trail, which was especially pretty since it mostly follows the creek.
The complex also has a restaurant, landing strip, horseback rides, 4-wheeler tours, and more. They have a penned area with some reindeer if you’ve never seen one up close.
The RV sites were all dry camping. There is a dump and fresh water station. Many of the sites were along Monument Creek and we could hear the water babbling through the RV. Who needs a white noise machine?
Dealing with 24-hours of sunlight
We haven’t had too much trouble going to sleep, but when you wake up in the night and it’s light out it is very confusing to your body. So we popped into Lowe’s and bought more Reflectix ( to black out our bedroom windows. Now it’s like a cave back there and perfect.
This video was shot on an iPhone X ( and edited with iMovie.
