Russia: First Kalashnikov Cup fires off in Dzerzhinsky, Moscow region
The first Kalashnikov Cup took place in a shooting club in Dzerzhinsky city in Moscow region, Sunday. The tournament consisted of 20 exercises, which were performed by some 350 Russian and foreign participants.
The main judge of the Kalashnikov Cup, Dmitri Udras, explained that most participants of this competition are amateur, noting that there are, of course, also professionals coming from different trades who hone their skills this way.
At the end of the tournament, a new MP-446C VIKING-M pistol was unveiled. The pistol was reportedly designed for those engaged in shooting sports. The modified design of the barrel increased the gun's sturdiness, with a resource of about 50,000 shots. The gun's balance has also been improved to reduce its toss when firing.
The winners received medals at the end of the competition, which ran over the course of two days. This was the final tournament of the first season of the Continental Rifle League and the Russian Gun Cup.
Kalashnikov is the largest Russian manufacturer of automatic combat and sniper weapons as well as guided artillery shells and has a wide range of precision weapons. The brand is named after the famed gunsmith who created the legendary AK-47 and AK-74, which are used by the armies of more than 27 countries.

These are the people who like weapons, who respect the culture of weapons and who have fun with weapons. There are, of course, also professionals coming from different trades who hone their skills this way.

Russia: Football hooligans clash as Dynamo Moscow plays Fakel Voronezh
Clashes broke out between dozens of football fans during a football match between FC Dynamo Moscow and FC Fakel Voronezh supporters in Voronezh, Saturday. More than 10 people, including one policeman, were injured, while nine were arrested.

STORYLINE:
Russian Soccer League match between Moscow sides Spartak and CSKA turned into a massive fight between fans and police on the terraces of the Luzhniki stadium.
One of the Europe's biggest stadium that seats up to 85,000, turned into a battleground between groups of young clubs' supporters and police force that tried to quell rowdy fans. Hundreds of stadium seats were torn resulting in tens of thousands dollars damage.
At least 12 people were hospitalized, fans and police alike, and hundreds of arrests were made during and after the match.
Both CSKA and, especially, Spartak fans are known for their propensity for violence. Earlier on Saturday hundreds of CSKA and Spartak fans paticipated in hit-and-run battles through the city, both between members of two rival gangs and police.
Troubles at the terraces of Luzhniki have started when police tried to stop the fans from firing flares at the pitch.
The Spartak - CSKA game itself was never interrupted despite the fighting and the match ended in1:0 victory for Spartak.
Russia is the recent years experiences an upsurge in football-related violence that authorities seem to be unable to deal with.
Nearly every tour of the Russian Soccer League competitions brings the news of violence around the pitch but the battle at Luzhniki on Saturday appears to be the biggest one in years.

Alleged Russian mafia gang leader among several arrested
An alleged Russian mafia gang leader wanted in connection with scores of killings and other criminal activities in Russia has been arrested in Thailand while living on a retirement visa, police said on Wednesday.
The Russian mafia boss, Alexander Matusov, was arrested on Monday in front of a supermarket in Thailand's eastern seaside town of Sattahip in Chonburi province, according to police.
Matusov's network Chelkovo was active from 1995 to 2009 and was notorious for killings, extortion and kidnaps in Moscow and St. Petersburg areas, according to Alexey Falunin, a Russian diplomat in Bangkok.
They account for about 60 murders and were enjoying great notoriety in the criminal world, he said.
The Russian authorities issued arrest warrants for Matusov and other gang members for allegedly murdering four members of a rival gang in 1996.
Thai police said the 52-year-old first entered Thailand in 2009 and left before returning on a fake Armenian passport.
Thai immigration police had revoked his visa and were pushing for his deportation to Russia for prosecution.

The World Cup is well underway in Russia, finishing July 15.
The event was first held in 1930, and was contested by just thirteen teams.
Today that has all changed. 32 teams are taking part in Russia after a two year qualifying process.
STORYLINE
The 2018 FIFA World Cup is spread across 12 stadiums in 11 host cities.
They range from St. Petersburg, which is so far north that the sun doesn't set on some summer days, to Sochi and its subtropical climate on the Black Sea coast.
STADIUM GUIDE:
LUZHNIKI STADIUM
City: Moscow
Capacity: 81,006
Cost: 24 billion rubles ($410 million) for rebuild
A vast bowl built in the 1950s to showcase the sporting might of the Soviet Union, Luzhniki has been transformed to host the World Cup final.
The old stands were ripped out and the athletics track from the 1980 Olympics torn up as the stadium was converted into a football-specific venue.
That increases capacity and comfort, while bringing fans closer to the action.
Luzhniki reopened on Nov. 11 when Argentina beat Russia 1-0 in a friendly. Russian fans praised the rebuild, but many were angered by lengthy delays in accessing nearby public transport. That improved for subsequent friendlies, but allow plenty of time for travel to Luzhniki and back.

SPARTAK STADIUM
City: Moscow
Capacity: 43,298
Cost: 14.5 billion rubles ($250 million)
Home of the 2017 Russian Premier League champion Spartak Moscow, this stadium opened in 2014 and is already well tested as a venue for Champions League and Confederations Cup games.
It is usually known as the Otkritie Arena, but FIFA rules on sponsorship mean a temporary name change for the tournament.
The towering statue of a gladiator outside is a nod to Spartak being named after the Roman slave rebel Spartacus.
It is the only World Cup stadium built without government money. Transport is relatively easy from central Moscow, though chronic traffic jams mean most fans prefer the subway.

ST. PETERSBURG STADIUM
City: St. Petersburg
Capacity: 68,134
Cost: 43 billion rubles ($735 million)
Almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong with the St. Petersburg stadium.
Severe delays and soaring costs were just the start for a project which became notorious for employing North Korean laborers, one of whom was among at least eight people to die on the stadium and 17 across all World Cup construction sites, according to the trade union Building and Wood Workers' International.
A deputy governor of St. Petersburg has admitted his role in a 50-million-ruble ($850,000) scheme to siphon off the stadium's budget, though officials say the true picture of corruption was much larger.
The spaceship-like arena - which will host a semifinal - remains plagued by a leaking roof and a pitch which had to be replaced repeatedly.
Confederations Cup games, however, passed largely without incident and Russia says it's working to iron out any more problems.

FISHT STADIUM
City: Sochi
Capacity: 47,700
Cost: 23.5 billion rubles ($400 million) for initial construction, 4 billion rubles ($68 million) to convert for football
While memories of the Sochi Olympics became dominated by Russia's doping scandals, one part of the legacy is still gleaming.
Nestled by the Black Sea, Fisht Stadium hosted the lavish opening and closing ceremonies for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and then Confederations Cup games.
How that Olympic legacy continues after the World Cup isn't clear; Sochi doesn't have a football club to use the stadium.

Russia: Drag queens welcome Olympic visitors to Sochi's largest gay bar
Club Mayak, the largest gay club in Sochi, is preparing for the Sochi Olympics just like the rest of the city and Olympic village. The club is one of two gay clubs in Sochi and is expecting foreign Olympic fans to fill their bar.
The drag queens and waiters were all practising their English, on Sunday, for the event that will have a worldwide audience. Despite Russia's recent legal moves in respect to the gay population, Mayak has faced no problems with the law.

Man stabbed '18 times in 25 seconds' on train
A security camera shows the moment Lee Pomeroy was stabbed 18 times in 25 seconds, on a train from Guildford to London in January.
The Old Bailey sat in silence during the graphic clip of the quick and frenzied attack on a train from Guildford to Waterloo.
The 51-year-old was stabbed by fellow passenger Darren Pencille on 4 January.

Final video of the Kazan Summer Universiade 2013 - FISU
Azat Kadyrov, Executive Director of the Executive Directorate of Kazan 2013 and Rafis Burganov, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport of the Republic Tatarstan presented the final report.
'The Universiade in Kazan became a vivid and memorable sporting event in a series of major competitions held in our country in the last 30 years. It has presented modern Russia as a great sports nation in the best light possible', the Minister said. 'I am certain that visitors and participants will remember the Kazan Summer Universiade as one of the best of many years to come. The memories of the Games will long live in the hearts of the residents of our Republic and city. The Universiade did not just transform our city, but also changed the way our people think, their attitude towards sports and a healthy lifestyle.'
Azat Kazyrov reminded the EC members of the key facts of the Games. For the city, these Games were not an end but a new start. 'Our current goal is to provide for a rational and effective use of the rich legacy that was left after the Universiade. To that end, we have developed the 27th Summer Universiade Legacy Concept, which compromises the following main components: modern cost-effective sports venues, material and technical foundation for universities, unique Universiade Village complex and a modernised city infrastructure.' No doubt, the Universiade was a strong incentive that pushed forward the socio-economic development of Tatarstan and Kazan in particular. 'As we originaly planned, the city underwent 15-20 years of development in just 4 years', Kazyrov explained and gave as an example the Kazan International Airport which was renovated and received the award of 'Best Regional Airport in Russia and the CIS', while the city was also been named city with the best transport system out of the 9 Megapolises in Russia. It is now almost five times easier to move around Kazan than in Moscow. This large divide between Kazan and other Russian cities is also a shining example of the Universiade legacy. Kazan continues to be a 'sports city'. Recently, the European Badminton Championships were held at the Gymnastics Centre, while the Aquatics Palace hosted the National Synchronised Swimming Championships. The World Fencing Championships will be held in July. In 2015 the FINA World Championships will be hosted and in 2016 the IAAF World Junior Championships. Furthermore, in 2017 and 2018 the city will welcome games of the FIFA Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup respectively. 'The legacy of the FISU Universiade in Kazan will serve Russia and the Republic of Tatarstan for many long years', Kazyrov ended his report. 'We are not saying goodbye, we are merely saying see you soon!'
