Beilstein, Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany | Travel & Family Vlog
This is yet another charming village on the Mosel, hugging a sharp turn of the river and surrounded on three sides by the classic steep vineyards for which this wine-growing region is famously known. There's no train station, no bridge crossing the Mosel, and the main connection to its neighbor across the river is a miniscule car ferry with no roof.
Beilstein is one of those complete medieval village with an intact core of attractive half-timber houses and its own estates of timeless vineyards, crowned with the romantic ruin of an ancient castle on the hilltop above. Along with Cochem and Bernkastel this was one of my favorite towns on the Mosel in terms of aesthetic quality.
This tiny wine-growing community had one castle at the top, one church on a small knoll, and two streets full of drinking establishments and shops focusing on the world-famous vintage from the nearby slopes.

1. Rhineland-Palatinate or Rhineland-Pfalz is a state of Germany, located in the west, covering an area of 19,846 km2 and a population of 4.05 million inhabitants. Rhineland-Palatinate is reputed for its rugged landscapes, as well as its wines from the valleys of the Moselle and Rhine. Indeed, this state produces 2/3 of all German wines, and is the only state to have a wine minister.
2. Settled by Celtic and Germanic tribes in ancient times, the region was conquered by the Romans and remained part of the empire for four centuries. By the end of the 5th century, the Rhineland-Palatinate was annexed to the Frankish kingdom by Clovis.
3. Mainz is the capital and largest city of Rhineland-Palatinate. Mainz was founded by the Romans in the 1st Century BC during the Classical antiquity era, serving as a military fortress on the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire and as the provincial capital of Germania Superior. Mainz was heavily damaged during World War II, with more than 30 air raids destroying about 80 percent of the city's center, including most of the historic buildings.
4. Mainz is famous as the home of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable-type printing press, who in the early 1450s manufactured his first books in the city, including the Gutenberg Bible. His introduction of mechanical movable type printing to Europe started the Printing Revolution and is regarded as a milestone of the second millennium, ushering in the modern period of human history.
5. Trier is a city in Germany on the banks of the Moselle. Founded by the Celts in the late-4th century BC as Treuorum, it was later conquered by the Romans in the late-1st century BC and renamed Trevorum or Augusta Treverorum (Latin for The City of Augustus among the Treveri). Trier may be the oldest city in Germany.
6. Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary. Born in Trier, Germany, Marx studied law and philosophy at university. Due to his political publications, Marx became stateless and lived in exile with his wife and children in London for decades, where he continued to develop his thought in collaboration with German thinker Friedrich Engels and publish his writings.
7. Johannes Wilhelm Hans Geiger was a German physicist. He is best known as the co-inventor of the detector component of the Geiger counter and for the Geiger–Marsden experiment which discovered the atomic nucleus. He was the brother of meteorologist and climatologist Rudolf Geiger.

Oberwesel, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany
Oberwesel is situated in the middle Rhine area on the left bank of the river. It is surrounded by vineyards and overlooked by Schonburg Castle; and with 18 towers has the most complete town walls in the Middle Rhine region.
GERMANY: Cochem - town on the Moselle
Cochem is a small traditional German town with half-timbered houses and an exceptionally scenic location on the river Moselle (German: Mosel) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The town is situated in a valley and has an almost Mediterranean climate, with warm sunny days over a 9 month season, summers are mild to hot.
Cochem is the center of the Mosel wine trade and is surrounded by high elevations, steep vineyards.
Mosel is one of 13 German wine regions for quality wines and takes its name from the Moselle River. The wine region is Germany's third largest in terms of production but some consider it the leading region in terms of international prestige.
The steep river bank slopes that are scattered around the Mosel region are considered some of the most labor-intensive vineyards in the world. Mechanical harvesting is impractical and nearly seven times more man hours are needed in the Mosel than in flatter terrain. A benefit of the steep Mosel vineyards is that the incline allows for more direct sunlight to have contact with the vines.
The Moselle is a river flowing through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. It is a left tributary of the Rhine, which it joins at Koblenz. The Moselle twists and turns its way between Trier and Koblenz along one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys. Its hillsides are covered by terraced vineyards where some of the best Rieslings grow, and numerous ruined castles dominate the hilltops above wine villages and towns that line the riverbanks.

Wines in Romantic Germany - The Rhineland-Palatinate
Rhineland-Palatinate is Germany's number one wine-producing region. (Around 70 percent of all German wine is produced here) Its mild, sunny climate and nutrient-rich soils are perfectly suited for growing grapes. The six wine regions of the Moselle, Middle Rhine, Ahr, Nahe, Palatinate and Rheinhessen,- which includes the only German Great Wine Capital, Mainz - encompass the full range of German wines.Viticulture was brought to Rhineland-Palatinate by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and nowadays attracts wine lovers and connoisseurs more than ever.
Wine festivals
The wine festivals in the regions around Rhine and Moselle are a pure pleasure, as diverse as the grapes that are grown and pressed here. Streets, lanes and squares are decorated, garlands of leaves and coloured ribbons bedeck the wine stalls. The air is full of music and the scent of wine. Often, there are colourful processions through the villages to celebrate the pleasure of wine and its traditions. Wine festivals may culminate in the crowning of wine princesses, queens or even Bacchus, the god of wine.
Wine and culture
The cultural destiny of Rhineland-Palatinate was sealed when the Roman civilisation of antiquity took root here all those centuries ago. In the Wine Land Rhineland-Palatinate, you'll discover over 500 castles and palaces, countless Roman buildings, the former Roman Limes border wall, the UNESCO World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley with the famous Loreley rock, and the cathedrals in the World Heritage towns of Trier and Speyer, and in Mainz and Worms.
