Rich Mountain - Moses Cone Memorial Park, NC
My first hike back from injury. I went to Moses Cone Memorial Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Located beside Blowing Rock this park is open all winter and has very easy trails. The trails are former carriage roads built by Moses Cone in the early 20th century. I hiked here over a year ago to Flat Top Mountain, which has beautiful views from the fire tower. This time I went to Trout Lake and Rich Mountain. The views aren't as grand but it was still a pleasant hike. A little long for my first hike back, but I still enjoyed getting outside in the mountains.
Hike distance 9.0 miles with 853 feet elevation gain in 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Sledding Hill - Boone, NC
Over the Presidents Day / Valentines Day weekend we & The Longs rented a cabin in the mountains just outside of Boone, North Carolina. There was about a foot of snow on the ground when we got there and it snowed everyday we were there except Sunday. This sledding hill was just beside our cabin and was a lot of fun going down but not so much fun walking up.

Carriage Trails at Cone Manor
Moses and Ceasar Cone began their dream of an estate as a place to visit and shake off the business ventures of their time. In the early 1890's they began to collect land just outside of Blowing Rock. They collected roughly 3,600 acres of land which included Flat Top Mountain, Rich Mountain, farmland, and virgin hardwoods and evergreens.
As time progressed they added apple orchards, two lakes stocked with trout and bass and imported deer from Pennsylvania. To access these areas they built the 25 miles of carriage trails.
Today, those carriage trails are for hiking, running and horses riding. They are visited by locals and tourists traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here's a list of the trails: Figure Eight Trail, Flat Top Road, Bass Lake Loop, Manor House Circuit and Maze Trail, Rich Mountain Trail, Trout Lake Loop and Rich Mountain Carriage Road. 25 miles of hiking and exploring so don't get lost.
