History for Lunch - An Iowa Treasure: Preservation of Motor Mill on the Turkey River
Larry Stone and Marlys Svendsen present 'An Iowa Treasure -- Preservation of Motor Mill on the Turkey River.' Learn about this 6-story limestone mill, built after the Civil War, and the surrounding historic district tucked away along the Turkey River in Clayton County. The speakers explain how the 1899 iron Motor Bridge was destroyed by floods in 1991/2008 but was reconstructed in partnership with FEMA, State and local partners.
Larry A. Stone is passionate about Iowa's outdoors. He has explored the state for 40 years, both as outdoor writer/photographer for the Des Moines Register, and as a freelance nature writer and photographer. He's written five books and his work appears in conservation magazines. He is a member of the Clayton County Conservation Board. Larry manages woodlands and prairies on the Stone's farm along the Turkey River near Elkader.
Marlys A. Svendsen is equally passionate about Iowa's historic buildings. She has worked on Iowa City's historic residential and downtown neighborhoods for 20 years and joined the staff of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management in 2008. Her skills as a historian and architectural historian are now at work on the Motor Mill Historic District near Elkader.

McGregor Iowa 1870 and 2017 Street Scenes
This video starts with a photo of McGregor in 1870 and then starts with a driving video exiting from Pikes Peak State Park to the bottom of the hill and it turns right onto main street. This video was taken July 4th, 2017, approximately two weeks before an EF1 tornado hit the town on July 19, 2017.
A couple of things you may find interesting is that McGregor, Iowa, is the home town of the Ringling Brothers family. They started by training their dogs to do tricks and it blossomed into a circus known as The Greatest Show on Earth. The circus ran from 1871 to 2017. The video ends with a photo of the circus wagon located near the corner of A and Ann Streets.
If you would like to donate to restore McGregor and help the families affected by the tornado of July, 2017, please contribute to the Restore McGregor 2017 Tornado Fund.

Benton county iowa near Benton City Park flood of 2008 was higher than the flood of 2016. Note the position of the water's edge on the road. Many trees were removed, but the bridge and signage is the same. Then on Lewis Bottoms Road in Linn county Iowa, a blacktop washed out completely due to flood erosion. This was replaced with a concrete road bed and gravel sides, with turf in the ditch. After a few hours it has not eroded on the leeward gravel sides.
