Mount Auburn Cemetery is the first rural cemetery in the United States, located on the line between Cambridge and Watertown in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Boston.
With classical monuments set in a rolling landscaped terrain, it marked a distinct break with Colonial-era burying grounds and church-affiliated graveyards. The appearance of this type of landscape coincides with the rising popularity of the term cemetery, derived from the Greek for a sleeping place. This language and outlook eclipsed the previous harsh view of death and the afterlife embodied by old graveyards and church burial plots.

Mount Auburn Cemetery has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the Department of the Interior, recognizing it as one of the country's most significant cultural landscapes. Founded in 1831, it was the first large-scale designed landscape open to the public in the United States. Today its beauty, historical associations and horticultural collections are internationally renowned.

Mount Auburn Cemetery
The Mount Auburn Cemetery located in Watertown and Cambridge, Massachusetts, covers 175 acres, it was founded in 1831. Being America's first landscaped cemetery it is listed as a National Historic Landmark. A few of the notable people with monuments on the grounds are Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Mary Baker Eddy, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Fannie Farmer, Winslow Homer and Julia Ward Howe.

Trailer - Sacred Ground: The Battle For Mt. Auburn Cemetery
'Sacred Ground: The Battle For Mount Auburn Cemetery' is a feature-length documentary about community activists and family members battling a Methodist church for control of historic Mount Auburn Cemetery. For years, Mount Auburn Cemetery was the only place in the Baltimore area where African-Americans could be buried. It is the final resting place of lightweight boxing champion Joe Gans, the first African American world champion in any sport, and numerous leaders in the early civil rights movement. It is a registered historic landmark that has fallen into such horrifying condition that bones litter the ground and weeds cover all but the highest monuments. It is a tale of grave robbing, grave recycling and every other terrible thing that could possibly happen in a cemetery.
The film follows Lu Moorman, president of Preservation Alliance, an independent group of activists and family members, and her attempt to wrest control of the cemetery from its stewards, Sharp Street Memorial Church. Dating back to the 1790s, Sharp Street Memorial Church is one of the first African American Methodist congregations. It was once the most influential African American church in Baltimore, but its numbers have dwindled over the years and its financial resources have waned. The current pastor Rev. Dell Hinton appointed her father, Rev. Douglas Sands, head of the cemetery. They, too, have a plan to restore the cemetery with the help of Morgan State University, but who can be trusted to speak for the generations buried beneath its soil?
In 2009, conditions at Burr Oak Cemetery, the historic African American cemetery in Chicago, aroused nationwide outrage. This film should engender similar outrage upon its release.

Bringing New Life to Mount Auburn Cemetery
Herpetologist Joe Martinez, curatorial assistant in the herpetology department at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology, is bringing new life to Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown and Cambridge, Mass., by introducing vernal pool breeding frogs and toads to the cemetery. Watch the video to learn more about this unusual and innovative conservation project.

Copp's Hill Cemetery Boston Puritan graves Cotton Mather
This short film shows Copp's Hill Burial Ground (or Burying Ground),which was founded in 1659 in Boston, Massachusetts. The video also depicts Old North Church where Paul Revere was notified by lantern that the British were coming. In the distance is the Charles River, Boston Harbor and the Zakim Bridge. Also seen in the Puritan Cemetery are the graves and tombs of Cotton Mather, Increase Mather, 17th Puritan Christian ministers and Prince Hall, founder of the African American Masons, named after him.

Martha and Hayden, Mount Auburn Cemetery and Harvard Museum of Natural History
Martha and Hayden were married on Halloween at the Mount Auburn Cemetery. The reception took place at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. This was a true Gothic Wedding, Martha designed her own dress as well as Hayden's attire and bridesmaids. It was a truly unique and creative wedding.

It is however one commonality we all have in common: the interment of the dead. In this episode we endeavor to share with you a typical cemetery in the United States, and at least a few of the different arrangements which one might encounter.

The Formation of American Identity through the Lens of Mount Auburn Cemetery | Patrick Gabridge
Playwright Patrick Gabridge (Blood on the Snow, Cato & Dolly), will touch on a group of historic topics about which he’s writing new short plays for performance at Mount Auburn Cemetery—all related to American history and identity. The subjects include the formation of Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1831 and its important influence on cemeteries across the United States; Mount Auburn founders Jacob Bigelow and Joseph Story; Harriot Kezia Hunt, one of the first female physicians in the U.S. and Edmonia Lewis, the first black female American sculptor; Charlotte Cushman, famed actress of the 19th century, and Harriot Hosmer, a well-known sculptor and part of a community of independent women in Rome in the mid 1800s; and Armenian immigrants/refugees in the early 20th century. Patrick is the artist-in-residence at Mount Auburn Cemetery and has been actively wandering and researching the grounds and its residents for the past year.
Patrick Gabridge is the playwright of Blood on the Snow (recently staged at the Old State House) and many other historical plays, as well as the novel Steering to Freedom, about Robert Smalls.
