Mt. Elgon national park boundary demarcation worries the Benet people
The Benet Community in the eastern district of Kween are protesting a new move by the ministry of Lands to open boundaries for Mt Elgon National Park. The Indigenous group is suspicious that the exercise is meant to evict them from land the Uganda WildLife Authority has previously claimed is part of the National Park. However the ministry of the Lands Spokesperson Denis Obbo says the exercise is meant to gather information that will help the Government and parliament reach a decision on how to implement a Consent judgement reached in 2005.

Mount Elgon cracks raise fears of major landslides
Heavy rain in the eastern Uganda district of Mbale has caused fresh cracks in Wanale hill, with locals fearing a repeat of the disasters in 2010 and 2012 when over 100 people died and thousands were displaced. There is also a danger that the huge rocks on the hill could roll down. The sub counties of Busoba, Busano and Bungokho are affected.

UGANDA: MOUNT ELGON JEWISH COMMUNITY

Uganda isn't the place one immediately thinks of when Judaism is mentioned.
But in one mountainous region of the country, is a community which has been practising the religion for most of this century.
They pray in Hebrew, honour the Torah and recognise Israel as the Holy Land.
But despite this, they aren't recognised by Orthodox Judaism.
On the rugged and fertile foothills of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda, lives the tiny community of the Abayudaya, or the African Jews of Uganda as they are more famously known.
The Abayudaya are neither part of the fabled Lost Tribes of Israel, nor are they recognised by Orthodox Jewery.
They are Baganda, originally from central Uganda, who migrated to the east during the early years of this century, and who have been practising Judaism since 1919.
The community was founded by the legendary military commander Semei Kakungulu.
Through reading the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), Kakungulu converted to Judaism shortly before his death, establishing the Jewish community which still lives here.
In 1999 they number less then 500 in total.

Today, the synagogue still has no doors or windows.
Inside sit a dozen or so male Abayudaya praying, and reciting the scriptures in Hebrew.
The Abayudaya of Uganda are an unusual phenomenon in Jewish history, having converted to Judaism without any external Jewish aid or influence.

The Abayudaya regard Israel as the religious and spiritual centre of the universe.
They see it not only as the cradle of Judaism but also where its respected and well known holy men are buried.

SIPI FALLS - EASTERN UGANDA
In our sounds of business we take you to Eastern Uganda on the slopes of mount Elgon. Located in Kapchorwa District, Sipi water falls is a major tourist attraction.
Abseiling, hiking, cultural tourism and coffee tourism are some of the main tourist attractions. Sipi's longest drop is 100 meters.

A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined National Park as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a national park in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.
The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park.
National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located.

Western Uganda dominates with much of Uganda’s most popular tourist sites. But Eastern Uganda presents a slightly different tourist proposition that needs to be given a bit of attention to harness its potential. This arose on the sidelines of the World Mountain Forum which was held in Mbale.

Rights Violation on the Rise in Teso
In Teso region there is growing concern of human rights abuses, with locals and security agencies trading counter accusations. Locals say security agencies especially Police, is abusing their rights during arrest by way of beating them during arrest and denying them food while in Police cells. But the Uganda human rights commission eastern region has embarked on sensitizing locals and the security officers.

AIMS /OBJECTIVES: The projects out standing aims /objectives among the few are;
a)To educate the citizens i.e. widows, widowers, youth and children
b)To sensitize the masses about the modern measures of population growth rates.
c)To provide the basic services like shelter, food, clothing and so forth.
d)To ensure that there is provision of funds / money to the limited needs of the affected people.
e) To enable the youths; widows and widower, needy and children with elementary skills to help them be self-dependent and self-reliant.
f) Ensure that that people living with HIV receive treatment in the near future
g) Support HIV prevention, treatment and care programmes for people who use drugs
h) Remove punitive policies and laws, stigma and discrimination that block effective AIDS responses and marginalize key populations (men who have sex with men, transgender people, sex workers and prisoners)
i) Stop violence against women and girls and promote gender equality
j) Enhance social support for those affected by HIV, including orphans and vulnerable children

A documentary filmed, edited and produced by Stuart Cohen for the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) about Mount Elgon National Park, in association with the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
I was asked in February 2014 if i'd be interested in producing a short film about the management of Mount Elgon National Park for the UWA as a volunteer representing the International Union for Conservation of Nature, of which i am a recent member. I was told that I'd have to take this on at my own expense, in as much as i'd have to fund my travel to Uganda and all production costs. In the end the UWA were very generous in assisting me with most of my expenses while i was in Uganda. Once there i met a magnificent group of dedicated UWA staff who were extremely welcoming and helpful throughout my stay in Uganda. This film is about the park, the daily challenges of the UWA staff managing this 1200 sq km volcanic caldera and the neighbouring communities who have embraced the park and all the benefits it offers them and future generations.
The film was shot in May 2013 and completed ready for it's first screening on November 14 at the IUCN Mountains Dinner at the World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia, an event that's held only once every ten years.This year 6,000 national park managers and environmentalists from around the wold attended.

UWA, local communities row over Elgon boundaries
The State Minister for Lands, Persis Namuganza, has flagged off a team of surveyors to start reopening boundaries in the Mt. Elgon region. The exercise is aimed at bringing to an end a long running conflict between the community and officials of Uganda Wildlife Authority. The demarcation, said to cost 300 million shillings will cover eight districts in eastern Uganda. The move follows a recent directive by President Museveni
