Hiking Up Mt. Katahdin, Baxter State Park - Millinocket, Maine
Baxter State Park is located in the wilderness of central Maine. It is home to Mt. Katahdin, which at 5,269 feet is the highest mountain in Maine. Kathadin is also the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, making it a popular hiking destination.
In addition to the Appalachian Trail, the Abol Slide Trail offers another route up and down Mt. Katahdin. Both routes have stretches that are more like climbing than hiking. Plan on making a full day out of it. Even if you're fast and athletic, you'll want to spend some time at the top enjoying the views that you came up here to see.

Hiking Mt Katahdin in Maine

Recently we took a trip out to the Maine woods to shoot some footage of a log sided home and surroundings for Hill View Mini Barns.
The home sits on Millinocket Lake about 1/2 hour out on gravel roads. There wasn't a sound around and the lake was glassy quiet!

Mt Katahdin, located in Baxter State Park in the Penobscot River watershed, is Maine's tallest peak and the northern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail. Mt. Katahdin is just a half hour drive from Northern Outdoor's Penobscot River rafting operations on Pockwockamus Pond. Hiking up this popular peak is a very doable day trip with serious views and scenery as your rewards. The guide staff at Northern took a day to explore, before hitting the Class 3-5 Penobscot River the following day to raft with happy river guests.
