Secrets of Manaslu trekking in Nepal - 2 (Circuit / Larke pass)
Manaslu trek in Nepal is definitely the one we should not miss. Of course, all those trekking in Nepal are good but this one tastes different for sure. I was really satisfied with the scenery, culture and struggle at high altitude too haha.
I trekked with five of my friends/clients from Canada and Australia to do Manaslu round trekking via Larke pass. I previously made video till samagaun so i have started this video directly from there. It was an amazing experience trekking with best people to Manaslu circuit trekking in Nepal. Trek in Nepal itself is an amazing thing and i was lucky to have best companion. Going through the Larke pass 5160 m is not a joke but beauty of it is incomparable which makes you to forget the pain and suffering.
Manaslu Circuit Trek : The majestic mountainsjust east of the Annapurnas are the mighty peaks of Manaslu Range . They take their name from the awe inspiring Mt Manaslu, the eighth highest mountain in the world, which dominates this landscape. Very few visitors trek in this recently opened trekking route but lately it is catching the eye of more and more trekkers. Mainly because the ever popular Annapurna Trek is becoming affected by road building that is causing trekkers to look for nearby alternatives. This makes a visit to the unique and unspoiled Manaslu region a must for all adventurous souls seeking unsurpassed natural beauty and a fascinating look at the remote local cultures of the region. The trek passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area at the village of Jagat and requires a special permit to enter.
The raging Budhi Gandaki Riveris ever present along the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Sometimes you are trekking close along the riverbank and sometimes you are gazing on its power from high on mountain side. The local Nepalese believe that the enticing sound of the swirling rapids is the river singing to those that come under its spell. The constant churning and thrusting of its mighty flow as it crashes into huge boulders creates mini waterfalls and rock pools that are beautiful to witness. The river is fed by countless waterfalls cascading down from high above. So high that sometimes you can’t fit the entre waterfall in your camera frame. But the higher you go the character of the river morphs into a bubbling mountain brook with moss covered branches straddling its course.
This area is marked by two cultural highlights: Gorkha, which is the ancestral seat of the reigning Shah dynasty and the temple of Manakamana Temple. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Bhagwati and devotees believe if you make the pilgrimage to this holy site all your wishes will come true.
Since the treks in the Manaslu region originate at around 1000 meters and reach as high as 5200 meters, the trekker will see a wide range of flora and fauna typical of the middle hills and alpine regions of Nepal. The trees andplants to be seen along the trek are thousands of tall Himalayan pinetrees with a strangely hallucinating hue of green and the evercolorfulrhododendron when in bloom present an intoxicating colorfulbackdrop. Thewildlife are harder to see but if you are lucky include barking deer, pika and Himalayan marmots.The many kinds of birds are easier to spot are pheasant, raven and chough.
People of Tibetan origin tend to scratch out an existence in the villages in the upper part of the trek. Other people found along the trail are Gurung and Tamangs. All are very welcoming and seem to enjoy the influx of people from other parts of the world walking through their villages during the trekking season.
The best time to trek here is between September and May where the clear skies offer the best views. The months of June to August are the monsoon season and tend to be difficult because of the heavy rain and swollen rivers that often wash away many locally made footbridges. October and November are the peak times because of the clear skies and not so cold temperatures at high altitudes.
There are many teahouses along this trek that can be reached after a day’s walking from one to the other. Or you can choose the camping option depending on your fancy.Government regulations require all groups to the Manaslu Circuit to be fully self sufficient and accompanied by professional guides and porters.
The start of the trek is a jeep or bus ride from Kathmandu to the town of Arughat and from there to Soti Khola which is the end of the road and trekking begins in earnest.

Trekking in Nepal, I would say, is a kind of addiction in a good way. Once you do trekking in Nepal, you will definitely be trekking again and Manaslu is the best option for those who wants to see the real Nepal. Or lets say primitive life style in modern world with amazing mountain scenery. Manaslu trekking area is highly influenced by Tibetan cultural heritage which makes Manaslu trek unique.
I took public bus to Arughat from Kathmandu in the morning at 6 o'clock and reached Arughat afternoon then i found a truck so i was able to get to Sotikhola. Here my trekking started and trekked up to the Samagaun. I was hoping to go through the larke pass but it was too much snowing so i had to stop. I went to Kathmandu the same way back. The areas to the east of the Annapurna are the peaks of Manaslu group. Few visitors trek to this area, which makes a visit here all the more unique and unspoiled. The area is bordered by River Budhi Gandaki and to the west River Marshyangdi. This area is marked by two cultural highlights: Gorkha, which is the ancestral seat of the reigning Shah dynasty and the temple of Manakamana. The Manaslu Circuit trek is a tea-house trek which circumnavigates the 8th highest mountain in the world (8156m). The Manaslu trek begins either in the town of Arughat Bazaar or Gorkha Bazaar and ends in Besisahar, which is also the starting point for the Annapurna circuit. The trek has all the elements of other treks in Nepal including both Hindu and Buddhist culture, protected wildlife, rhododendrons and wild flowers, raging rivers, precarious bridges and stunning mountain scenery. The high point of this trek is the crossing of the Larkya La Pass (5,213m). From here there are views of Himlung Himal (7,125m), Cheo Himal (6,820m), Kang Guru (6,981m) and Annapurna II (7,939m).

✦TREK INFORMATION
The Manaslu Circuit trek is 175 km from start to finish and is usually completed with about 14 days of total trekking time (although it could be done in as little as 10 days or as many as 17 days depending on your pace, fitness level, and amount of time in Nepal). Of course do not forget to factor in the full 10 hour drive each way to and from Kathmandu that is in addition to the above trekking times. Most days of walking involve 6-8 hours of walking time and generally most trekkers walk around 15-20 km per day. There are teahouses usually every 5km along the trek though, so you can arrange your days to be shorter if you need more time to manage the steep trails and stone steps of the trek.
This trek is getting more and more popular as a new trekking destination but it still sees fewer trekkers compared to the established trekking routes in the Mount Everest and the Annapurna regions. This is a perfect trek for the intermediate and advanced trekkers who want fewer crowds and more rugged terrain while still walking a teahouse trek where all the food and lodging is completely provided. This means you do not have to carry your own tent, food, stoves, sleeping pad, or sleeping bag and can even carry loads as light as 10-15 pounds with just some warm clothes and snacks.
The circuit is a stunning trek with spectacular views of the 8th tallest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu (8163 m) and the Ganesh Himal Range. Along the trail you encounter an interesting mix of authentic Hindu and Tibetan-style Buddhist villages and the trail walks right through these traditional stone house villages that provide an excellent cultural backdrop for the Himalayas. The trail follows the spectacular Budhi Gandaki River all the way from Arugath to its source just below the Larkya Pass- also spelled Larke Pass- at 5,125 m.
As you start the trek, at an elevation of 700 m you pass through lush jungle environments and over swinging hanging steel bridges that span class 6 rushing rivers and thick forests of ferns and giant trees. As you ascend through the trek you gradually acclimatize up through pine forests and then eventually cross the tree line at around 3,600 meters. Finally you spend your last days of ascent in the alpine zone and cross the high pass at 5,215 meters.
The crossing of the Larkya Pass (5125 m) can be tough because of the high altitude and here you will need to walk slowly to maintain your breath . Most trekkers spend about 80% of their trekking time slowly ascending over 8-10 days so that they can cross the pass. Then trekkers descend relatively fast losing 1,500 meters each day in a short two days. However, the stunning landscape with the mighty Himalayas towering straight above you and the spectacular glaciers make it more than worth the effort. The pass links the Budhi Gandaki with the Marsyangdi valley. The descent passes through beautiful alpine meadows at Bhimtang before joining the main Annapurna Circuit route heading to the trailhead at Besisahar. The Manaslu trek is easily accessible from Kathmandu. It originally started in the town of Arughat or Gorkha; however, with roads being built many trekkers start at either Barpak or Soti Khola a bit further up the trail.
The trek described here starts in Soti Khola and ends in Chyamche. It’s also possible to finish the walk in Besisahar which is also the starting point for the Annapurna circuit. The itinerary below is one of the many possibilities. The trek can be made longer or shorter depending on the length of your walking days and starting point. There are basic guesthouses all along the trail so you can choose if you want to camp or stay at the teahouses/guesthouses. You can combine the Manaslu Circuit with the Tsum Valley, a beautiful, secluded valley where century old Tibetan traditions prevail.
The 2015 earthquake had a big impact in the Manaslu region and destroyed several lodges along the trail. Reconstruction work for lodges and infrastructure is moving forward rapidly and so finding accommodation shouldn’t be a problem as of autumn 2016.
