Today we are doing The Mount Walk in Tauranga in the Mauao Reserve. This is the best place to get views in Mt Maunganui and Tauranga! The Mount at Mt Maunganui is not to be missed when travelling the Bay of Plenty and Tauranga! The Mount Mauao in Tauranga provides excellent views of Tauranga city and Mt Maunganui city. The Mt Maunganui walk has several track to make it to the top of this volcano.

Mt Maunganui Summit Walk
We were on our way to Gisborne and stopped at Mt Maunganui for lunch. We were thinking about going up Mt Maunganui but it just started pouring with rain.
We had lunch instead at The Coffee Club
When we were done with lunch the weather cleared enough so we went up. It was harder than I thought it would be. Very steep and gazillion of stairs. Chanel cried on the way up (she is 11). The views on top were worth it. We got enough Instagram worthy photos.
On our way down we were almost at the bottom it started pouring with rain again. So very lucky we actually made it to the top without getting soaked.

Climbing The Mount in Tauranga, New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is a holiday paradise - you can surf, swim, play golf, shop, dine or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. There’s no pressure here, just take your time to enjoy the pace of life you want.
Located across the harbour from Tauranga, “the Mount” is almost surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with New Zealand’s best beach on one side of its peninsula, and the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay on the other.
And overlooking it all towers the mountain itself – Mauao.
Standing 232m above sea level, Mauao means ‘caught be the dawn’ and the mountain is steeped in Maori history and mythology. Several historical pa sites (villages) have been built on this extinct volcanic cone, the evidence of which can still be seen today as you explore the popular walking tracks.
It will take you around 45 minutes to circumnavigate Mauao’s 3.4km-long base track. This is New Zealand’s most popular walk, with expansive ocean views, majestic pohutukawa trees, peaceful beach inlets and numerous places where you can stop and admire the view. The wide, well-maintained pathway is suitable for strollers and you can finish your walk off with an ice-cream on the beach afterwards.
There are several tracks to Mauao’s summit where you can enjoy breathtaking 360° views along the entire Bay of Plenty coastline, and out across the harbour to Tauranga and the Kaimai Range beyond.
Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach has been crowned the ‘Best Beach in New Zealand’ by TripAdvisor, and ranks among the top 25 best beaches in the world.
Relax on the wide expanse of white sand and swim in the warm ocean waves. This is a great place to kick back and people watch. Numerous beach, ocean and multisport events are held here and people of all ages enjoy the Main Beach year-round.
Stroll across the road and choose a table at any number of beachside cafes and restaurants. This relaxed al-fresco dining precinct is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch in the sunshine.
Just around the corner you’ll find some of the best boutique shopping in New Zealand.
Mauao also marks the entrance to Tauranga’s harbour and the port has become the largest cruise tour port destination in New Zealand. Watching luxury cruise ships sail in and out of Pilot Bay is a fun way to spend a summer’s evening.

Relief for locals as much-loved Mount Maunganui walking track re-opens
The base path was washed away two years ago.

So this is Mauao, also known as The Mount, an extinct volcanic cone at the end of the peninsula north-east of Tauranga's city center, just look at it towering over the town of Mt Maunganui. There are various scenic walks you can take to the summit, 232 meters above sea level. Its a very popular destination so I will recommend to start your walk very early.
People flock to the summit for various reasons, fitness seemed to be a very popular reason, but I was attracted here by a photo I've seen, taken from the summit overlooking Mt Maunganui. It was breath taking and I just had to see it for myself.
So we made it to the summit, and its finally time to search for the least obstructed view to get my shot, and there it is... a little path going down to a cliff edge, but let me just warn you, to get there is scary, the path is steep and brittle, making it very slippery with noting stopping you from falling over the edge!
The views over Mt Maunganui is really awesome and well worth the effort.
Going down we took the shorter route, it has way more stairs but the views... surely makes up for it!

E01 Roundtrip New Zealand (Tauranga, Coromandel Peninsula, The Pinnacles Walk)
This is the first episode form our Roundtrip of New Zealand. Our Trip started from Tauaranga, where we did the Mount Maunganui Summit Track. From there we drove to the Coromandel Peninsula, visiting the Hahei attractions including Stringray Beach, Cathedral Cove, the Smiling Sphinx Rock and the Hoho Rock. We then drove along Highway 25 passing Coromandel Town all the way to Thames from where we headed to the Pinncales walk. It only took us 4:30h pure walking time to climb the steep 850 hightmeters to the spectacular view and back down again.

Mount Maunganui Base Track is Pram Friendly (almost)
Mauao is a historic reserve owned by Maori and managed by Tauranga City Council. The base track is 3.5 km loop and takes about 40 minutes to walk with beautiful views the whole way around. It is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs except for one section on the western side which due to a slip recently has had a staircase built, approx 30 steps up & 30 down.

The base track reopens after slip and debri repairs from February 2011. This has to be the best walking track in the world for ease of access and unspoilt beauty.

Mount Maunganui is located atop a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland, a geographical formation known as a tombolo. Because of this formation, the residents of Mount Maunganui have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. At the base of Mauao, the distance between the harbour and ocean side is a couple of blocks.
The ocean beach has Mauao or Mount Maunganui at its western end, and a man made land bridge connecting Moturiki Island at its eastern end
