Goma is the biggest city in Easter Congo – with a population of half a million. The Goma airport is located in the middle of town. In January 2002 the volcano Niyragongo erupted and buried large parts of the city and the airport under massive layers of lava. Although parts of the runway cannot be used anymore, the pilots keep using it to take off and land planes.
The location of the Goma airport makes the situation for the residents particularly dangerous. In 2008 a plane shot over the end of the runway into the city and killed 47 people – most of the dead were visitors to the local market.
The reconstruction of the runway started not till seven years after the volcanic eruption. The Department for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany financed the construction work, while the Welthungerhilfe conducted it on-site. It was a long and difficult process until the project could be finalized. The construction work was disrupted by disputes between the regular army and the M23-Militia in 2012.
The first step towards the reconstruction of the Goma airport was finally completed in February 2015. Prospective developments are the entire asphalt coating, an extension and the professional illumination of the runway. In future the people in Goma will profit from more security, a connection to the international air traffic and economic development.

Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Trekking to the crater rim (starting at 1,989m/6,525ft, reaching 3,470m/11,380ft) is about 5-6 hours, the hikers sleep in huts on the top and enjoy stunning night views of one of only several crater lakes in the world, this one being the largest.
Virunga National Park, in the eastern part of DR Congo, was the first Africa's national park, established in 1825, and UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979.

Mount Nyiragongo in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano with an elevation of 3,470 m in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. It is located inside Virunga National Park, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about 20 km north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. The main crater is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls – one at about 3,175 m and a lower one at about 2,975 m. Nyiragongo's lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history. The depth of the lava lake varies considerably. A maximum elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 3,250 m prior to the January 1977 eruption – a lake depth of about 600 m. A recent very low elevation of the lava lake was recorded at about 2,700 m. Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions.
The volcano partly overlaps with two older volcanoes, Baratu and Shaheru, and is also surrounded by hundreds of small volcanic cinder cones from flank eruptions.
The lava emitted in eruptions at Nyiragongo is often unusually fluid. Nyiragongo's lavas are made of melilite nephelinite, an alkali-rich type of volcanic rock whose unusual chemical composition may be a factor in the unusual fluidity of the lavas there. Whereas most lava flows move rather slowly and rarely pose a danger to human life, Nyiragongo's lava flows may race downhill at up to 100 km/h. This is because of the extremely low silica content (the lava is mafic). Hawaiian volcanic eruptions are also characterized by lavas with low silica content, but the Hawaiian volcanoes are broad, shallow-sloped shield volcanoes in contrast to the steep-sided cone of Nyiragongo, and the silica content is high enough to slow most Hawaiian flows to walking pace.
Not much is known about how long the volcano has been erupting, but since 1882, it has erupted at least 34 times, including many periods where activity was continuous for years at a time, often in the form of a churning lava lake in the crater. The existence of the lava lake had been suspected for some time, but was not scientifically confirmed until 1948. At that time, it was measured at nearly 120,000 square metres. Subsequent expeditions showed that the lake fluctuated in size, depth, and temperature over time.
The lava lake activity continued through 2010. As of June 2010, the lake is mostly confined within a broad, steep-sided cinder cone on the crater floor, roughly 60 feet high by 600 feet wide.
Localized carbon dioxide toxicity, known locally as 'mazuku', has killed children even more recently. In locations where the gas seeps from the ground in relatively high levels, without the dispersing effects of wind, its effects can be deadly. On March 8, 2016, Goma Volcano Observatory discovered a new vent that opened in the northeast edge of the crater, following local reports of rumblings coming from the volcano. Some fear that this could lead to a flank eruption.
The volcano is monitored by a team of scientists at the Goma Volcanic Observatory. It is monitored 24/7 365 days a year with seismic data produced every four minutes and temperature data produced every ten minutes.

Nyiragongo Volcano and the Volcanic Observatory of Goma, Congo
On January 17th, 2002, Nyiragongo volcano erupted. Lava flows ran across the town of Goma (600,000 inhabitants), and ended up in Lake Kivu. At that time, the town of Goma was in the hands of Congolese rebels, supported by the Rwandan regular army, so the central government of DRC did not take any security measures for survivors and homeless people. The population had the time to run away from the town, so only some hundred people died, but thousands of houses were destroyed and the rest was pillaged by the Rwandan army.
Three years after the eruption, the inhabitants of Goma are reconstructing their houses on the solidified lava flows, on the exact spots their homes had been destroyed. If a new eruption took place, those new houses would be swept away and burnt again. The international community finances a Volcanic Observatory in Goma, where some Congolese scientists, under the supervision of famous Belgian volcanologist Jacques Durieux, try to forecast the next eruption and, with the help of the local authorities, hope to be able to evacuate the town as quickly as possible to reduce the number of victims.
