Snowboard descent (rider Matt McCullough of the USA) of Alexandra glacier/Stanley Plateau on Mt. Stanley within the Rwenzori Mountains National Park of Uganda on April 29, 2017. Unfortunately, there were near white-out conditions and the glacier surface existed of slightly carveable crust and patches of black cruddy ice. The video is submitted as documentation of the poor snow conditions on the glacier which were quite different than expected. Unfortunately the glacier is melting rapidly on Mt. Stanley just below its peaks of Alexandra and Margherita (third highest point in Africa).

Highlights from our 8 Day Trek through the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda to Margherita Peak in Uganda with Rwenzori Trekking Services. From August 14-21, 2019, our four mountaineering guides, Herbert, Ochora, Remegio and Benard led us up into the mountains for approximately 81k or 50 miles round trip. With over 30 porters and cooks supporting us, we started in Kilembe and stayed in huts along the way.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers nearly 100,000 ha in western Uganda and comprises the main part of the Rwenzori mountain chain, which includes Africa's third highest peak (Mount Margherita: 5,109 m). The region's glaciers, waterfalls and lakes make it one of Africa's most beautiful alpine areas. The park has many natural habitats of endangered species and a rich and unusual flora comprising, among other species, the giant heather.

With good conditions attempt Speke & Baker for mixed scrambling / low grade climbing. Bring your own crampons, harness and belay device and if you can source a decent rope that's good too.

A tour of the Rwenzori high peaks in western Uganda, in one of KEA's Bell 412 helicopters. The heli ops base, the soccer field near the vanilla processing plant at Ndali Lodge, is at 4712 ft. MSL, the summit of Mt Stanley is at 16,762 ft. The snow and ice occurs above about 15,000 ft.. We flew around both the Uganda side and the Congo side of the peaks. Some of the video clips were taken by a handheld camera and some by a GoPro attached to the tail boom looking forward and down. No landing was made on the glacier saddle but it might have been possible with a lighter load. This is in the northern hemisphere but only just barely, the high peaks are about 30 miles north of where the equator crosses the Uganda/Congo border.
