Mount Usher Gardens (Ashford, Ireland) was laid out in 1868. It is spread on twenty acres of land along River Vartry, having more than 5000 plant species. The Avoca Garden Café serves delicious meals throughout the day. The Courtyard shops offer a wide variety of products and services from fashion, equestrian supplies, and lovely things for the home and garden.

Mount Usher - Enchanted Garden
The Mount Usher Garden, Ashford, Co. Wicklow, (Ireland) was created by four generations of The Walpole Family spanning a period of 115 years commencing in 1865. In 1980 the gardens were bought by Mrs Madelaine Jay who leased it to the current tenants, Avoca Handweavers in 2007.
The garden, which covers 8ha (22 acres) through which the Vartry River runs, is home to 32 of the Champion Trees of Ireland as well as approximately 4,500 different varieties of trees, shrubs and plants, many of which are rarely seen growing anywhere else in Ireland.

This video was created by us in May 2018 on two visits to the Gardens. Thus you can see a large spectrum of spring / summer vegetation - from beautiful Bluebells through majestic Rhododendrons to colourful Azaleas. 700 individual clips were recorded, all sounds also recorded at the gardens, some 50 hours of video editing, few hours of choosing music and many revisions and corrections of the final edit.

Mount Usher Gardens
Mount Usher Gardens were established by Edward Warpole in the 1860’s. The Garden has been a Robesonian garden for nearly 150 years.
Edward Warpole originally bought the mill here at mount usher. Originally a tuck mill and then a corn mill, it unfortunately fell down and the house was built in the 1920’s. Note that it is very unusual to have a 1920’s house when you think of the political landscape of Ireland at the time.
The garden comprises of about 22 acres and it is designed all the way along the river varty. It is acid soil so we grow a lot of rhododendrons and azaleas and we have two national collections of nothofagus and eucryphia.
The garden stayed in the Warpole family up until about the 1980’s when Mrs Madeleine Jay bought it and immediately banned chemicals. The Latest historical development of Mount Usher would be that the garden was leased to Avoca Hand weavers and it was Mrs Jay’s way of securing the future of the garden that she loved so much.
