Driving through Lone Pine, California - Mount Whitney April 2019
Lone Pine Lake - a real gem on the Mt Whitney Trail
Lone Pine Lake is a stunningly beautiful lake at 10,000 feet on the Mt Whitney Trail. This alpine lake is surrounded by high granite peaks and can be easily accessed from the Whitney Portal. A great place to camp or have a picnic or have a pause on your Mt Whtiney ascent. The lake on the day of this photo was so flat and mirror - like one could be tempted to walk across it as if it were ice.

Mt. Whitney - Sequoia National Park - California 14er Dayhike
The tallest of them all...Mt. Whitney. It's one of my favorite hikes in all our beautiful National Parks. Mt. Whitney can be most directly reached by a 11+ mile trail from Whitney Portal, outside of the town of Lone Pine on the east side of the Sierra. Ice axes and crampons are needed in spring and early summer, but technical climbing equipment is not usually necessary between mid-July and early October.

Up the Mt Whitney Portal Road
The Mt. Whitney Portal Road rises from Lone Pine California, at 3700', through the weird boulder gardens of the Alabama Hills, and up the steep flanks of Mt. Whitney, whose towering summit reaches 14,505'. The road accesses trail heads and campgrounds in a deep bowl below the summit, surrounded by great slabs of cliffs and pine forests.

Whitney Portal Road, California
September 2017
We took the Whitney Portal Road from Lone Pine, CA up to the Whitney Portal Campground.
This campground is the gateway for those climbers that attempt to climb Mt. Whitney from the east side. The Campground has an elevation of 8, 374 feet.
This road is paved but somewhat narrow and winding, with dramatic switchbacks, all which make for a fun drive.

Lone Pine: Living Under the Post Card View of Mt. Whitney
Thanks to Bobby, Small Towns to Summits continues to move full speed ahead. This interview and his follow up was a validation that these stories demand to be told. A couple days after the interview, Bobby sent us a text that read:
“Just had to express just how very special you both made me feel. Knowing how absolutely wonderful it feels to have someone do something out of the ordinary for someone else (as you did for me) speaks exactly to the very reason I do what I do for others. Case in point when I sing for an anniversary or other special occasion at table side and see how that works for others. Well, I think you get where I’m going. Thank you and I sincerely hope that this will be the beginning of a new wonderful and very special friendship.”
This experience deserves a follow up. Having the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the people that we are interviewing, the town as a whole, and the mountain itself is a blessing that has the potential to bring about positive social change if we take advantage of this unique position. We cannot wait to involve all of you as we travel throughout various towns on our route and bring them to life through the voices of those who live there.

Mount Whitney Portal, Inyo, California
Mount Whitney is the highest mountain peak (4421 meters) in the contiguous 48 states of the United States of America, located in the Sierra Nevada mountains east of the Central Valley of California. Mount Whitney straddles the border between Inyo and Tulare counties. The east slope of Mount Whitney is Inyo National Forest. This forest is a low-density pine forest with a few scrubs and many streams and bodies of fresh water.
The campground for Mount Whitney portal starts at 2500 m in elevation, and is already freezing cold throughout most of the day in October, even in this record hot year of 2012. Despite the cold and short amount of daytime, one should bring large quantities of water and sunblock, as the light from the sun has much less atmospheric molecules to pass through and thus the ultraviolet light exposure to the skin is much greater than down in the chaparral and deserts of California, causing much faster and stronger sunburns. Many parts of the trail are snowy or icy, and there are multiple water crossings, so hikers are required to have good balance and to wear thick hiking shoes with a lot of traction on the soles. As the signs at the end of the video state, people have died trying to get to the summit of Mount Whitney. Some of these deaths are from the usual causes, while there are reports of hikers ignoring incoming storm reports and exploding from lighting strikes or getting trapped by blizzards. The first person who died on Mount Whitney (I'm sure Native Americans died here first over the millenia) in United States history got blown up by lightning.
