Serbia: Avala Mountain
The third and last part of our 2018 trip to the Balkans. Me and Marlo took a bus from Belgrade to Pinosava and hiked up the Avala Mountain. Blog post:
Avala Hill, Belgrade - Avala, Beograd
Avala is a mountain in Serbia, overlooking Belgrade. It is situated in the south-eastern corner of the city and provides a great panoramic view of Belgrade, Vojvodina and Šumadija, as the surrounding area on all sides is mostly lowlands. It stands at 511 metres (1,677 ft) above sea level, which means that it enters the mountain category just by 11 m (36 ft).Avala is located 16 km (9.9 mi)[1] south-east of downtown Belgrade. The entire area of the mountain belongs to the Belgrade City area, majority of it being in the municipality of Voždovac. The mountain is built of serpentinite, limestone and magmatic rocks, which are injected in the shape of cone (laccolith). Other peaks include Ladne vode (340 m (1,120 ft)), Zvečara (347 m (1,138 ft)), Sakinac (315 m (1,033 ft)). The Avala had deposits of ores, most notably lead and mercury's ore of cinnabarite but mining activities which can be traced to the pre-Antiquity times. Archeologist Miloje Vasić believed that the vast mines of cinnabarite (mercury-sulfide) on Avala were crucial for the development of the Vinča culture, on the banks of the Danube circa 5700 BC. Settlers of Vinča apparently melted cinnabarite and used it in metallurgy.Mining was active on the mountain at 3000 BC.

The Avala Tower (Serbian: Авалски торањ / Avalski toranj) is a 204.5 m (671 ft) tall telecommunication tower located on Avala mountain in the periphery of Belgrade. It was destroyed in NATO bombardment of Serbia on 29 April 1999. On 21 December 2006, the reconstruction of Avala Tower commenced and the tower was officially opened at a ceremony on 21 April 2010. It is currently the tallest tower in the Balkan region.
Serbia - Mount Avala
Opened in 2010.
The Avala Tower
Tower is a 204.68 m tall telecommunications tower located on Mount Avala, in Belgrade. The original tower was finished in 1965, but was destroyed on 29 April 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. The tower's reconstruction commenced on 21 December 2006 and it was officially opened on 21 April 2010.
The tower was designed by architects Uglješa Bogunović and Slobodan Janjić, and engineer Milan Krstić. Contractor was the Rad construction company. Construction started on 14 October 1961 and was completed four years later, in 1965. The tower weighed 4,000 tonnes Between 102 m and 135 m , there was an enclosed observation deck, entered at 122 m and reached via two quick elevators. It was the only tower in the world to have an equilateral triangle as its cross section, and one of very few towers not perched directly into the ground, but standing on its legs. The legs formed a tripod, the symbol of Serbian tripod chair. It is one of the small number of towers to be constructed in that manner.
The Monument to the Unknown Hero
Designated in 1984.
The Monument is a World War I memorial located atop Mount Avala, south-east of Belgrade, Serbia, and designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Memorial was built in 1934-1938 on the place where an unknown Serbian World War I soldier was buried. It is similar to many other tombs of the unknown soldier built by the allies after the war. The Žrnov fortress was previously located on the same place.
On the night of 14 October 1915, Combined squad of the Belgrade's Defense, held the line Avala-Zuce, defending it from the joint Austro-Hungarian and German offensive. Austro-Hungarian 9th Hill brigade of the 59th Division took the front rim of Avala on 16 October, with an assignment to push Serbian forces from the mountain. Austro-Hungarians were reinforced with one German half-battalion. However, one Serbian battalion successfully defended the top of Avala against the Austro-Hungarian battalions of the 49th and 84th regiments, aided by the 204th German reserve infantry regiment. On the same day, the command of the Belgrade's Defense ordered the retreat to the new positions so on 17 October occupational forces reached the southern section of Avala, conquering the entire mountain. Their soldiers then buried Serbian combatants who were killed in action. In the valley, below Žrnov, on the grave of one of them, they placed a wooden cross with the inscription in German: One unknown Serbian soldier.

Christmas 2013 on Avala Mountain in Beograd
My awesome Serbian buddies wanted to take me on a unique trip on Christmas day. They knew I was far from home and wanted to keep me company, I love Serbs! :) We decided to head up to Avala Tower. It is about 17km outside of Beograd. It is a communication tower that is in the shape of a rocket. They US and NATO forces destroyed it in 1999, but it was rebuilt to a hight of 204 meters. It is on a beautiful hill that has a few restaurants and a beautiful memorial to the UNKOWN HEROES. It costs 200 dinars to go up to the top of the tower, but it is worth it. :)

Avala pod zvezdama / Night sky timelapse - Avala, Belgrade
Timelapse video nastao tokom nekoliko nocnih poseta Avali, sa željom da prikažem Avalu pod malo drugačijim svetlom :).
This is a timelapse video taken on Avala mountain in Belgrade, Serbia.
Taken during few night time visits, features the TV tower, Monument to the Unknown Hero, and of course the beautiful night sky.
Have in mind, Avala is part of Belgrade, very close to it, so light pollution is a big problem.
