JAPAN Gero Onsen Gassho Village (Gassho Mura)
At Gero Onsen Gassho-mura, 10 gassho-zukuri (thatched) houses have been transferred from places like Shirakawa-go to form a precious outdoor museum which recreates a mountain settlement from former times, and offers a glimpse into what life might have been like for its inhabitants. Among the structures transferred is the Odo House, a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.
The village is also home to the Iwasaki House (a folk museum) and the Toyama House with Itakura storehouse. Both of these nationally registered Tangible Cultural Properties are open to the public.
Other attractions include workshops where you can try your hand at making ceramic art, patterned washi (Japanese paper) and other traditional crafts, a restaurant where you can savor the flavors of Hida, and Saijiki no Mori, a forest of Japanese cherry blossom and maple trees on a hill overlooking the village. Gassho-mura is a warm and friendly village with a heart, where the simple spirit of the people of Hida lives on.

River tracing Hyoe valley in Gero-city Japan
Another video from my friends, HAC Hida Alpine Club local mountainerring lovers on river tracing. Our Gero-city boasts of lots of greenery and clean waters, and active nature lovers like to trace rivers and gullies upstream rather than having to go through dense bushes. This area, the Hyoe-tani valley is located at the west of the Mount Ontake 3067m, and has numerous waterfalls. In July 2009, 12 members of the HAC enjoyed a hike visiting 2 stunning waterfalls and scrambling up lots of cascades.
Japan is a very wild country with 80% of the land mountainous. Climbing mountains sometimes is difficult due to thick bush as a result of lots of precipitaions. On the other hand, tracing rivers in upperstream areas has been favored by climbers and professional fishermen. This is a video report from HAC (Hida Alpine Club) at the Japan Alps area, exploring the Shin Valley in the Gero city.
Japanese Culture Vids: 岐阜県下呂の合掌村 Gero Gasshou Village, Gifu (Not Gaming Related)
Here is a bit of footage that I took from Gero, Japan. In Japanese onomatopoeia, Gero Gero or Kero Kero is the sound that frogs make. Although the Kanji (Chinese Characters) for Gero, located in the prefecture of Gifu do not mean frog, the name sounds like it and you can find frog statues and frog merchandise all around the town.
This village is a National Heritage monument and has an interesting story behind it. Watch the video to find out more if you are interested.
Thanks for watching.

I found this small graveyard adjacent a very old abandoned building of remarkable traditional craftsmanship in a tiny village near the coastal farming community of Yui, Japan. This video explores the graveyard, the wooden structure as well as the area around these which form the gateway from the village into the deeper mountains full of abandoned homes, farms and even solitary graves, forgotten and lost in the shadows of dark, silent cedar forests

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

Japan Travel Kumano Mountain Onsen
Awesome Riverside Kumano Mountain Onsen Hotel and Dinner
2018 Gifu Travel Video (TMV)
Gifu prefecture, north of Nagoya, is situated in a mountainous area of central Japan. The Hida region is surrounded by the both the Hida Mountains, which are referred to as the Northern Alps, and the Kiso Mountains, which are known as the Central Alps in Japan. It’s a gorgeous area far enough from the hustle and bustle of the major cities like Nagoya, Osaka or Tokyo. The prefecture includes the notable cities such as Takayama, Gero, and Shirakawa-go.
In addition, the volcanic activity in the area provides the hot spring water for the Japanese onsens for the Gero, Hirayu, and Okuhida areas. We spent a really long time at the Hirayu-no-mori’s Onsen to take in the hot spring waters and enjoy the local Hida beef. After a long soak in the onsen, it seemed customary to have a glass of Hida milk, plain or COFFEE flavored.
But the mountainous terrain provides some gorgeous scenery in the area. We would have liked to see the Japanese Alps from the Shinhotaka Ropeway. However, Typhoon Jebi knocked out the power to the region. But we got some great drone footage instead.
From Hirayu, you can take a bus to the Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan. People will camp or do a day trip to walk Kamikochi’s many hiking trails that are well maintained. If you come during the right months, you can catch some of the macaque monkeys, snow-capped Hotaka Mountain range from Taisho Pond or Kappa Bridge, or just enjoy the changing colors of the seasons. We would have liked to have seen more but we just didn’t have enough time to take everything in at the park.
We loved the food as well. We stumbled upon a restaurant that only served Unagi (eel) and it was absolutely delicious. Worth a trip but not easy to get to unless you have a car.
There is plenty to do and see in the Hirayu area. We wish we could have seen more but that means we will need to come back again to experience more of what Hirayu has to offer.
Attractions:
Kamikochi Chubu Sangaku National Park in Nagano, Japan
Check out Kappa bridge, Taisho Pond, and go for a hike in the surrounding area. Devote at least half of your day for hiking the area. Or if you prefer, camp at the park. You can’t drive directly to Kamkochi, you need to take a bus or taxi. Park at the Akandana Parking lot. It’s about 600 ¥ and the first bus stop on the Nohi Bus for Kamikochi. You can buy your tickets for Kamikochi there, or if the power is knocked out, they will let you hop on the bus and take you to Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal so you can buy your tickets there. Just remember that the parking lot closes around 5 pm (17:00) so a lot enough time to get back or your car could be stuck for the evening.
Hirayu Onsen Area
Lots of onsens in the area. Even if you don’t stay in their hotel, many will allow you to use their onsen facilities and they are inexpensive to use. Just follow the rules of using the onsen, shower before going into the onsen, no towels in the onsen pool, get used to naked people around you, enjoy the experience, and your towel will smell like sulfur afterwards (so be warned!).
Hirayu Onsen Bus Terminal (Nohi Bus System)
The bus terminal is one of the launching points to Kamikochi. The terminal has clean restrooms, lockers, onsen, restaurant, souvenir shop, and ticket kiosks. Parking is limited and depending on when you get there, only 1 hour of parking,
Hirayu-no-mori
The onsen we visited on our last trip. Well maintained facilities and you can buy towels from the lobby. In addition, they have a pretty good restaurant inside so you can soak in the onsen and enjoy a bite at one of their restaurants.
Shinhotaka Ropeway
It was down due to no power from Typhoon Jebi hitting the area.
Hirayu Otaki Park (Hirayu falls)
It was raining so hard when we got there and it didn’t let up. We weren’t equipped to handle the 30 min trek from the parking lot to the falls. But maybe next time.
Eats:
Unagi Restaurant (うな亭)
Japan, 〒506-1432 岐阜県高山市奥飛騨温泉郷一重ヶ根723
My mouth waters just thinking about this place. It’s definitely worth getting out there if you can make it. Savory and yet sweet sauce coats the entire unagi (eel) and it’s amazing. When you order, they give you a photo book with their offerings. It’s basically small to supersize me unagi, and you should get the soup as well.
Lodging:
Hirayu Camping Grounds
Whether you’re car camping, pitching a tent or renting a cabin from them, it’s a friendly place to get some sleep. Plus they have discount tickets to use the onsen at Hirayu-no-mori.

Adventures in Gifu Day 1 The Northern Alps and the Best Hot Springs in Japan - Traveling on a Dime
View the Playlist of all the Traveling on a Dime Episodes at:
Welcome to Japan! The most mountainous country in the world. Mt. Fuji is just a small, albeit well known, part of the picture.
The Hida Mountains (Northern Japanese Alps) straddle the boarders of Nagano, Gifu, Niigata and Toyama Prefectures and run all the way to the Sea of Japan, and they are some of the most glorious peaks you'll ever clap eyes on. What's more, bagging yourself one of those mountains (some of which rise to over 10,000 feet in elevation) is not overly difficult.
If you make your way to the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway in Gifu Prefecture (the longest aerial tram in Asia), you'll be able to ride the gondola all the way up onto the spine of those peaks and cut 1000 vertical meters off of any climb you make, or get yourself an effort free panorama view of the peaks of the Northern Alps. Come in the fall and you'll be able to experience one of the most spectacular displays of autumn leaves Japan has to offer.
Once you're done soaking in the scenes from on high, come for a soak in the best hot springs I've yet found in Japan. The Yarimi no Yu is a pool of authentic hot spring water straight from the source constructed on the banks of a river against a small cliff. From its clear blue waters one can take in the snow-covered peaks of the Hida Mountains, the forested lower slopes, and the river in one sweep of the head. Being on the river bank you have the chance at a little bit of cold water and, in the winter time, snowball shenanigans to make your soak that much more enjoyable. I've claimed to have found the best hot springs in Japan before and when I do it again it means I'll have found a place even better than this stunning locale. Happy Travels!
Bryan is an expat English teacher, published writer and aspiring producer living in Niigata Japan. When he isn't writing articles for Japanese publications in English, he likes to spend his modest earnings to find inexpensive ways to travel and experience Japan.
Traveling on a Dime is a periodic show of Bryan's adventures in one of the most expensive countries in the world. As he says, It doesn't have to be expensive, and you can have an amazing experience even when traveling on a dime.

This is an episode of Traveling on a Dime, produced by Grinning Studios' partner, Bryan Baier. The music is Somethin's Missin', by Graham Smith on his self titled album.
