The Monte Fitz Roy Trek in El Chalten is the most beautiful hiking trail in southern Patagonia apart from Torres del Paine. In this video I show my experience of hiking to Monte Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, you'll see what to expect and I give advices and tips.

- Best Time for Hiking in El Chalten -
The best time for trekking in El Chalten is in summer -- the season starts in Oktober and lasts until April. Before and after the season most hostels/hotels and restaurants are closed.
- Hiking to Cerro Tore & Laguna Torre -
This is an easy day hike where you don't have to be an experience hiker -- take some sunscreen, water and food. After around 3h you'll be at the Laguna Torre.
- Hiking to Monte Fitz Roy & Laguna Torre -
The most beautiful trail gets you close to the Monte Fitz Roy, the destination is called Laguna de los Tres. You should start at dawn in El Chalten to avoid the day tourists from Calafate. Be prepared as the trail is pretty tough at the end!
- Circuit Trail to Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre (multi day) -
Due to the well marked hiking trails you can easily connect both treks to a multi-day itinerary with camping.

El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.
Now we decided to also hike the Huemul Circuit - a challenging multi day trek which I already completed 3 years ago. Though it is a tough trek it totally pays off with the incredible views you get: from the glaciers of the Patagonian Ice Field to the turquoise waters of the Viedma lake.
This part of the trip was executed within 4 days and this is what we saw:
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Cerro Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy
- Laguna Toro
- Galciar Rio Tunel Inferior & Rio Tunel
- Paso del Viento
- Viedma Glacier / Glaciar Viedma
- Cerro Huemul / Vuelta Huemul
- Paso Huemul
- Lago Viedma
- Bahia Tempanos
- Bahia Rio Tunel
- Campo Hielo Sur
- El Chalten
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will visit the Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Fitz Roy Patagonia - Hikes from El Chalten
Senda al Fitz Roy is a 8 h hiking trail in Patagonia to the Lago de los tres. If there's no clouds you can see the mount Fitz Roy (3405m). The last km of the 10 km hike is quite steep and rocky so be careful on strong winds and rain. There's no need to bring a lot of water since you can refill you bottles at several spots on the trek with crystal clear glacier water. Great taste!!!
The next day we went to the Laguna Torre which is a more easy 6h hike.

The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.
Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.
To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.
This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
- O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Candelario Mancilla
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin
- Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia
- Lago del Desierto
- El Chalten

HIKING PATAGONIA : MOUNT CERRO TORRE : EL CHALTÉN, ARGENTINA
This video covers a 4 hour hike up Mount Cerro Torre.
We stayed in El Chaltén, and did not camp as we didn't bring any camping gears. There were many places to buy/rent the gears but we wanted a comfortable bed at the end of the day. From town, you head towards the trail to Laguna Torre.
This was our first day of hiking, and was the hardest one. Although the ground was flat all along, our body was in shock. Total hike time was 7 hours. Our second day (hiking Laguna de Los Tres) was a 9 hours hike and far more challenging but our body got used to it by then. Don't forget to watch our 2nd day adventure:

Chalten: what you need to know & hiking Fitzroy
I spent 10 days in Chalten before being able to hike Fitzroy, so here is my take on this ''off the beaten path'' hiking destination in Patagonia. It's a young and small town in Argentina and these are the key things to know before you go.
I also take you guys along as we do the one must do hike here to Lago de los Tres, which offered a great challenge and some incredible views.

This view requires one km of mountain trekking to reach, but it is really worth the effort!
Mindblowing Trek in El Chalten Patagonia I Fitz Roy
Our last minute trip to El Chalten Patagonia. We stop thinking about this place and that's why we book our flight to the South of Chile and hop on a few buses to get to El Chalten. Our goal was to hike Fitz Roy (Cerro Fitz Roy). Fitz Roy is located close to El Chalten - an absolutely stunning touristy village and probably the best trek to do in El Chalten Argentina.
We will never forget this day - probably one of our favorite days so far and we put a lot of work in this video. We consider this video as one of our best videos we have ever done. Spread some love.

Patagonia Hiking: Glaciers and Mountain Adventures from El Chalten
Patagonia is a special place. Based in El Chalten we spent 4 days hiking mountains and glaciers. Our guide showed us around some of the many picturesque spots on the Argentinian side of Patagonia.
Day 1: 24km
From El Chalten we hiked up to the 1500m summit of Pleigue Jumbabo. We took in views of Paso del Viento, Tore Laguna and granite massifs. It was amazing!
Day 2: 25km
We drove out of El Chalten to the Hosteria Pilar Valley to hike in the rain and snow through deep forests to get to Glacier Lake. We crossed Piedras Blancas Rio and had an amazing view of Laguna De Les Tres.
Day 3: 10km
We drove out to Lake Viedma and jumped on a boat to access the Viedma Glacier. We wore crampons and hiked around the glacier and explored drains, cracks and blue caves. The colours on the glacier were amazing - especially when the sun came out.
Day 4: 21km
The final day in El Chalten was done at a nice pace. We headed for Laguna Torres and got spectacular views of Grande Glacier and Mirador Torre. So awesome! We also got to see a hard core mountain race while we were chilling out at lunch. The competitors were nailing it!
Since this hiking trip to Patagonia, I have been dreaming about going back. One day!

El Chaltén, Argentina, makes you work for it. This deep into Patagonia, the towns are few and far between and the roads connecting them are desolate and unserviced. The colorful village, set within Los Glaciares National Park, is a hard place to get to.

Trek for Beginners in El Chalten Patagonia I Cerro Torre & Glacier
We decide to finish our trip to El Chalten by trek for beginners in Patagonia. Trekking viewpoint on Cerro Torre and Glacier Torre was very simple but with amazing landscape. There are so many treks in El Chalten Patagonia that you really need to choose what do you want to see but I would recommend to start with Cerro Torre and Glacier Torre to warm up your body and next day hit the road to Fitz Roy.
We still can't believe that we came to Patagonia Argentina without planning anything and it was worth all the travels to come here. We loved our stay in Argentina and would definitely recommend to everybody to visit El Chalten Patagonia.

El Chaltén is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It is located in the riverside of Rio de las Vueltas, within the Los Glaciares National Park (section Reserva Nacional Zona Viedma) at the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy mountains, both popular for climbing. It is also a popular base for hiking numerous trails, such as those to the base of surrounding peaks and glacial lakes, such as Laguna Torre.
For those reasons, El Chaltén was named Argentina's Trekking Capital or Capital Nacional del Trekking. It was built in 1985 to help secure the disputed border with Chile. Today the sole reason for its existence is tourism. It is 220 km north of El Calafate.
In October 2014, El Chalten took second place in a ranking of Best cities in the world to know of the travel guide Lonely Planet publishing in 2015, being the first city of Argentina.
The Laguna Torre lake is located in the Los Glaciares National Park, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. It is formed from glacial melt water and is a popular site for hikers and climbers to see surroundings peaks, including the east face of Cerro Torre.
The glacial lake is sited 10 km west of the El Chaltén tourist village, where it can be easily accessed by hikers between the months October to April.
Monte Fitz Roy (also known as Cerro Chaltén, Cerro Fitz Roy, or simply Mount Fitz Roy) is a mountain in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile. It is located in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, near El Chaltén village. First climbed in 1952 by French alpinists Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone, it remains among the most technically challenging mountains for mountaineers on Earth.
Patagonia clothing founder Yvon Chouinard used Monte Fitz Roy as the basis for the company's logo, after his ascent of the mountain, and subsequent film, in 1968.
Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno first saw the mountain on 2 March 1877. He named it Fitz Roy, in honour of Robert FitzRoy, who, as captain of the HMS Beagle had travelled up the Santa Cruz River in 1834 and charted large parts of the Patagonian coast.
Cerro is a Spanish word meaning hill, while Chaltén comes from a Tehuelche (Aonikenk) word meaning smoking mountain, due to a cloud that usually forms around the mountain's peak. Fitz Roy, however, was only one of a number of peaks the Tehuelche called Chaltén.
