Mouse museum prepares to celebrate Year of the Rat

The Russian town of Myshkin is looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year.
That's because the town is famous for its love of mice, and with the Spring Festival welcoming the Year of the Rat -or Mouse- residents are preparing to celebrate their rodent credentials.
STORY-LINE:
The Russian town of Myshkin, a little town located on the Volga river, 400 kilometers from Moscow, is famous for its love of mice.
The town's name is derived for the Russian word for mouse - mysh - and it's home to a museum dedicated to rodents, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year
This bronze mouse was the museum 's first exhibit. It was gifted by a friend of the museum's founders back in 1990.
Decorative mice of all shapes and sizes have travelled from all over the world to find their place on the shelves of Myshkin's Mouse Museum, explains executive director Lyubov Grechukhina.
Once we called out to the world - mice of all countries unite in Myshkin! And they responded to us, she says.
So now there are representatives of different parts of the world here - China, France, Mongolia, Japan, Singapore, Germany and many more well-known and little-known countries presented their gifts to us.
Large and small, grey and colorful, made of glass, ceramics, fabric - even chocolate, mice literally crowd the space of this little toy museum.
There's even a mouse made of bread - a bread roll mouse was donated to the museum by the German city of Stuttgart.
There's also a collection of letters that continue to arrive by post.
Elderly people write stories about mice, funny, scary, sad, while children usually draw, and send their drawings to us, hoping to get a small prize, and we don't disappoint anyone, says Grechukhina.
In total, there are 10,000 mice from 38 counties in the collection.
It is in small cities that this old Russian tradition is kept, people are more open, and more kind as in big cities, it seems to me, says Le Le, a visitor from China, who lives in Moscow.
Museum founder Vladimir Grechukhin says Myshkin positions itself as the capital of mice of the whole planet.
Because the city has such a funny name, and funny coat of arms, and funny legend, this positioning led to the strong association of the city with the image of the almighty, beautiful fairy tale mouse, he says.
Local legend says a prince who fell asleep on the banks of the Volga was woken up by a mouse running across his face.
He woke up and saw a snake and realized the mouse had saved his life.
The prince built a chapel on the site and the town grew around the chapel.
Tourism is the main industry here, it's a popular stop for river cruise boats. Town officials claim they receive around 200,000 tourists a year.
2020 is the Chinese Year of the Rat in which all rodents are celebrated.
Since 1996, the town of Myshkin holds a Mouse Festival every 12 years to mark the Year of the Rat.
We are preparing for the Year of Mouse, says Svetlana Chistyakova, director of Myshkin Tourism Centre.
You know that the Year of Mouse is only once every twelve years, and since 1996 when our first international mouse festival took place, we keep developing, we keep going forward.
This year, the Festival of Mouse will take place on the second Saturday in July.
The highlight will be the Mouse Parade, where citizens dressed as mice process along the main streets, accompanied by drummers and brass bands, as well as decorated cars.

Между Россией дореволюционной и Россией постсоветской устанавливается таинственная связь. Молодая графиня и посудомойка из общепитовской столовой видят один и тот же кошмарный сон: им снится невероятная, абсурдная страна, в которой зритель, конечно узнает свою родину. Кажется, что избавиться от этого бреда невозможно. Но герои фильма находят неожиданное простое решение...
