Kitchen fire at Auckland University Epsom campus goes to forth alarm for fire resources to battle the fire.
The University of Auckland's Epsom campus was closed for teaching today after a fire broke out in the cafeteria.
Black smoke filled the room where students were lining up for their morning tea about 10.20am.
A cafeteria staff member, who did not wish to be identified, said the fire had started in a deep fryer in the kitchen.
The university said in a statement that the building was evacuated promptly and there were no injuries.
The Fire Service was notified and quickly had everything under control.
Incident controller Dave Woon said it was fortunate no one was injured given the number of people who were on campus at the time.
There's a lot of people on this campus and the outcome has been pretty good. It's been efficient and the fire was out in a short space of time.''
The incident went to a fourth alarm - the most serious category of fire - and 16 fire appliances from surrounding stations had attended.
We think it's started in the cafeteria, it's gone through a couple of levels so we're unsure how that has happened,'' Mr Woon said. A fire safety officer would examine the deep fryer to see if it had caused the blaze.

Serious Crash Onewa Road Off Ramp - Auckland
Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle collision at the Onewa Road off-ramp in Northcote shortly after 1am.
Four people were taken to Auckland Hospital - two with serious injuries and two with moderate injuries.
St John attended a traffic incident in Northcote. 4 vehicles attended and treated 4 patients and transported to Auckland Hospital.
The Onewa Road off ramp was close for sometime while the Serious Crash Unit investigated the scene.

Since it's the winter time, there has been a lot of rain. So throughout the places we visited in Auckland it has been very muddy. We went to the top of the summit not by the easy driveway route, but by the hilly route. It was quite slippery and a bit of a challenge for us. So it was quite fun. We saw a lot of sheep along the way. On top of the summit we could see a great 360 degree of the entire Auckland city. From the sky tower to Mt Eden. It was quite a sight.

If you want to ramble through wide green spaces, One Tree Hill Domain and the neighbouring Cornwall Park form the largest area of parkland in Auckland City. The pastoral Cornwall Park, grazed by sheep and cattle, gives you the impression you are in the countryside.
Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill is Auckland’s largest and intact volcanic cone excluding Rangitoto and you get extensive city views from the summit. The 183 metre volcano has three craters and a lava field that extends to the Manukau shoreline.
The area was the largest and most intensively settled pa in Auckland, and was the centre of the Maori occupation during the 18th century when tribes of the region were united under the paramount chief Kiwi Tamaki. It is also associated with many of Auckland's influential figures including Sir George Grey and Sir John Logan Campbell who is buried on the summit.
