Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 3, Part 1 - Guposhan National Forest Park!
The next stop on our tour was Guposhan National Forest Park. The forest throughout the park was absolutely gorgeous and very lush with greenery. There are two major waterfalls in the park, both of which are featured in this video. Traveling through the park is mostly handled by speeding around in little carts because apparently walking is for squares.
The park also features a small temple to a local deity, situated at the top of 99 stairs. The temple has an associated brewery, where they offered us an alcohol tasting of liquor ranging from 5-60% alcohol content. Given that I can't stand the taste of alcohol, I could only handle 5% and 15%, but those that did try 60% said it tasted like rocket fuel.
One building in the park offered a free tropical bird show and had some speakers which, at one point, started blasting Asian dance music throughout the park. A field of flowers near this building is home to a huge number of butterflies, most of which will let you get very close to them before flying off.
The park also houses a small village that was used as a set for a Chinese television show Lovely Dreams. Nearby is the Monkey Zoo where you can find a few macaques in a cage. That part wasn't too entertaining. Also, the park has a lot of signs that say, No not disorder rubbish here. We liked those.
Overall, the scenery alone is enough to make the trip to this park worthwhile.
Day 3, Part 2:
Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 4, Part 1 - Huang Yao Town!
The next stop was Huang Yao, an ancient town that is still populated by thousands of people today. There is a small Chinese Communist museum just outside the town. The real attraction of this tour stop, however, was the town itself.
The town is a gorgeous little place with people bustling around going about their daily business. Our English-speaking guide informed us that he had learned English from watching American TV shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory. We were supposed to stay close to him at all times because it's easy to get lost in the town's narrow, labyrinthian pathways. Apparently the main attraction is to watch little boys in their underwear jumping off of a bridge and into the river below. And, of course, being little boys, they needed to show off and eventually started climbing on jagged rocks and jumping off of those instead. The town also has a small temple to a local hero. Praying to this hero is said to grant peace and protection. Huang Yao is an incredible little place that is definitely worth a visit.
Day 4, Part 2:
Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 4, Part 2 - Yet Another Amazing Technicolor Cave!
So, with two amazing technicolor caves already down, we all know the drill. This was a cave located near Hezhou city, known as the Ziyun Karst cave. It's a long cave with a lot of walking involved. This cave, more than the others, had a lot of formations that we were told looked like animals or people. There weren't any boat rides or anything like that, but they did have a sound system that played music at some points. The cave also has a shrine to a local deity at its center. Despite the goofy lighting, the formations in this cave were very impressive.
Day 4, Part 3:
Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 2, Part 2 - Hongyan Village!
The next stop on our trip was Hongyan village. This is a peaceful farming village that mostly produces peanuts and persimmons. The peanuts in particular were left to dry in the sun, as you can see at the very end of this video. The village leader took us on a tour of the village and then invited us over to his house for tea. An old man from the village also came and performed magic tricks. To leave the village, we needed to get across the primary river running through it. The options were to walk through it or to hop across on some stepping stones. I chose to use the stepping stones and it was quite difficult--they were a bit slippery! I definitely enjoyed this village. Also, we loved the vehicles with the exposed engines that kept showing up throughout our trip. :P
Day 2, Part 3:
Let's Tour Guangxi, China! - Day 5, Part 1 - Lotus Ponds And Lush Mountain Peaks!
We traveled to a remote area near Hetang village to enjoy the scenery. There were some large lotus ponds here nestled between the gorgeous mountains. A little bridge led out into the main pond, although it was very rickety. We spent a good deal of time here just relaxing and taking pictures. It was a bit difficult getting out of here, though--the bus had some trouble turning around on the narrow pathways!
