Rambling in Japan - Tsuruoka and climbing Haguro-san
I wander around Tsuruoka in Yamagata prefecture a bit, visiting one of the filming locations from the oscar-winning Japanese film Okuribito / Departures, then climb Haguro-san, one of the Dewa Sanzan sacred mountains.

Every year hundreds of Yamabushi mountain priests enter the sacred Mount Haguro for an Autumn Peak pilgrimage to worship their deities on over 2446 steps.
The shrine approach, is lined with ancient cedar trees dating back 350 to 500 years.
The yamabushi dress in checked ‘haori’ coats and are armed with a staff and a conch shell used for sounding their horn.
The mysterious sound of a conch shell, masterly blown by the priests, announces their passing.
Mt. Haguro is considered sacred by followers of Shugendo, an ancient Japanese tradition of mountain worship whose practitioners are commonly known as yamabushi (“those who lie in the mountains”).
They climb the 2446 steps to the shrine Sanjin Gosaiden, the largest wooden building with a thatched roof in Japan, a two-starred treasure that is featured in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.
Since the sixth century, mountain ascetics have roamed the three sacred mountains collectively known as Dewa Sanzan: Haguro-san, believed to represent birth, Gassan, said to represent death, and Yudono-san, believed to represent rebirth.

昼の姿もいいですが、夜のライトアップされたところもいいですね。
9時までのイベントで7時半くらいに帰ったのですが、その時間帯から羽黒山に向かう車が多かったので、多分この後はボチボチ混んだのではないかと思います。
うっそうとした杉林は、どれも太くて立派なものが多く
その中に静かにたたずむ五重塔は、趣、風格すべてが見る者を圧倒し感動させてくれます。
One Day at Sacred Mount Haguro-san in Japan
Rainy weather made some of the excursions iffy so Marine Steve and I just spent the morning soaking in the shrines and temples on Haguro-san.
This site has the thickest thatch roof in Japan, and was opened as a religious center1,400 years ago in 593 by Prince Hachiko,

Staying at a Hidden Japanese Mountain Temple in North Japan
People often romanticise the idea of retreating to a secluded mountain, to a temple or shrine. Now I can see why. (Even if the tranquility is somewhat disturbed by the presence of Ryotaro).

Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山) which literally means: the three mountains of Dewa, are sacred mountains in Yamagata Prefecture, each with a shrine on or near its peak including Haguro-San representing birth, Gas-san representing death and Yudono-san representing rebirth.
At the center of Dewa Sanzan worship, you will find the Shugendo religion based on mountain worshiping blending both Buddhism and Shinto traditions. Shugendo practitioners are called Yamabushi where feats of endurance are parts of their worshiping.
Unlike other temples of Dewa Sanzan, the Haguro-san top temple is accessible by car and as such it’s not only the first visited temple of them all but also the most popular! However, to appreciate the beauty of Haguro-san, it is advised, like we did, to climb the 2446 stairs to arrive on top of the mountain and enjoy the 33 figures carved into the stone steps. There enjoy the magnificent five-storied pagoda, erected in 937, located at the base of the mountain and hidden in a dense forest.
Haguro-san's main shrine holds the deities from all three Dewa Sanzan shrines, making it the most important of them all. Sanjin Gosaiden, the main building, features the thickest thatched roof in Japan with, according to the temple owners, a thickness of over two meters!

Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山), qui signifie littéralement “les trois montagnes sacrées de Dewa, sont bel et bien trois montagnes sacrées de la préfecture de Yamagata. Chacune d’elle est accompagnée d’un sanctuaire au sommet, ou tout près, qui sont Haguro-san représentant la naissance, Gas-san pour la mort, et Yudono-san évoquant la re-naissance.

Cependant, afin d'apprécier la beauté de Haguro-san, il est conseillé, comme nous l’avons nous-même fait, de grimper les 2446 marches pour se rendre au sommet tout en profitant des 33 statues gravées dans la roche ainsi que la magnifique pagode de 5 étages érigée en 937, et située à la base de la montagne dissimulant une forêt dense.
Le sanctuaire principal de Haguro-san possède les divinités des trois sanctuaires de Dewa Sanzan, ce qui le rend plus important que les autres. Sanjin Gosaiden, la bâtiment principal, a le toit de chaume le plus épais du Japon, une épaisseur de 2 mètres d'après les propriétaires du temple!

The Forests of Mt. Haguro! ???? Dewa Sanzan #2 (羽黒山)
Hey guys, Clyde here! Today I visited Mt. Haguro, the second stop for me in my quest to hike the Three Mountains of Dewa in Yamagata prefecture.

One afternoon, we drove into the midst of Haguro mountain. It surprisingly felt like we step into the different universe! The temple that is hiding in the place where full of peacefulness. It’s definitely the most peaceful place in Japan.

Daishinbo Shukubo at the base of Mount Haguro
This shrine Hotel is run by a Shinto Yamabushi priest and is the ideal place to stay if you want to explore the mountains. Just get the train to Tsuroka and then get the bus from outside the station (bus stop 2) and it stops just outside the door of the Daishinbo. While staying in the this quiet beautiful retreat the mother and the daughter of the house will cook you too amazing filling traditional meals a day. Your room will be a traditional tatami mat with a futon base on the floor. Its a authentic japanese stay in the most beautiful part of the world.
In the garden, there are a haiku monument of Basho Matsuo (Kannon Bodhisatva, goddess or mercy ) that is said to be the largest in the Tohoku district and Seikanzeon Bosatsu, an image of Buddha that is also considered to be a figure of the god of Mount Haguro at the period when Buddhism and Shintoism were mixed. They serve homemade cooking using seasonal local ingredients. It is a ten-minute walk to the five-story pagoda, a national treasure.
