SEED students from MHCC paddle with SyncOrSwim (www.syncorswim.org)
SyncOrSwim Dragon Boat Club of Portland (syncorswim.org) recruited a new 'International Team!' 18 students from Mt. Hood Community College joined SOS for the day to 'dig-in' on the Willamette River. The students are all from Central America and are here on a 2 year scholarship to study English and Natural Resources at MHCC. Coming from Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico the students will return to their countries to work in areas of eco-tourism, wildlife management and conservation. While they are here in the states they are busy studying and constantly working on watershed restoration projects throughout the Portland area with organizations such as Metro, SOLV.org, City of Gresham, Johnson Creek Watershed Council and many other community partners. Paddling on the Dragonboats gave them an opportunity to celebrate all their hard work. The SyncOrSwim team, in normal fashion made the experience flow with fast paddling and fun. Splash!

MHCC Board Meeting Spring 2009
Rae Nichelle-Peres speaking at the MHCC Board Meeting
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Board:
My name is Rae Nichelle-Peres - I am the current ASG Director of Diversity, and I come to you this evening to share an unfortunate story. In the past two weeks, while running as a candidate for the position of Associated Student Government Vice President, I have been victimized b some of the students of Mt. Hood Community College as a result of my sexual orientation. Now that elections are over, this has not stopped and I continue to face discrimination. In light of these recent events, I have received much support from the staff and faculty of Mt. Hood Community College have I have the utmost faith that the support with continue, for the fact that you, the Board, have no tolerance for discrimination in any form means a great deal to me as well as the students. I am looking forward to the betterment of Mt. Hood's students and will continue to be a voice for the students. Thank you.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is a major port in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of 2017, Portland had an estimated population of 647,805, making it the 26th-largest city in the United States, and the second-most populous in the Pacific Northwest (after Seattle). Approximately 2.4 million people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), making it the 25th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 18th-largest with a population of around 3.2 million. Approximately 60% of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.Named after Portland, Maine, the Oregon settlement began to be populated in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing progressive political values, earning it a reputation as a bastion of counterculture.The city operates with a commission-based government guided by a mayor and four commissioners as well as Metro, the only directly elected metropolitan planning organization in the United States. The city government is notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation. Portland is frequently recognized as one of the world's most environmentally conscious cities because of its high walkability, large community of bicyclists, farm-to-table dining, expansive network of public transportation options, and over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) of public parks. Its climate is marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and Portland has been called the City of Roses for over a century.
