SKY ISLAND SCENIC BYWAY is one of the most scenic highway in the southwest of USA with mountain forests, canyons. deserts, and breathtaking scenery vistas.
It is 27.2 miles long along Mt Lemmon Hwy, 30 miles northeast of Tucson AZ.
Plan for 3-6 hours to drive including backtracking.
It provides wonderful vistas, hiking trails, skiing in the winter and an escape from the desert heat in the summer.
It is also a perfect place to see Sunset.

Hohokam sites from 1,200 years ago have been found in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Later, the area was frequented by the Tohono O'odham and Apache.

Thanks largely to her efforts over 10 years, California adopted the golden poppy as its state flower in 1903. The poppy has now been the state flower of California for 107 years.
And an entire group of plants was named for her
She lived to be 93.
In 1920 the dirt road (Old Mount Lemon Road) was built from Oracle to Summerhaven.

Federal land and is maintained by the University for astronomical research and science education under the terms of a Permit with the U.S. Forest Service.
1956 1969 20-acre site was a Radar Base of the Air Defense Command
in October 1970 was converted into an observatory for infrared astronomy
It houses a radar tracking station operated from Ft. Huachuca and is the lone remaining military presence on the mountain is used to direct the Space Shuttle to an emergency landing in White Sands, New Mexico.
It is also a former communications center for the Titan missle defense system.

Mount Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona is the perfect place to scape from the heat and enjoy a good hike in the middle of the summer.
Some of the facts mentioned in this video are inaccurate, here is some information about this wonderful place:
One of the greatest pleasures Mount Lemmon offers is the drive to the top. At the start of your 25 mile journey, you will find yourself winding through the saguaro cactus lined hills of the Sonoran desert as you pass by scenic canyons on your way to the grasslands of the high desert.
From there you will travel further into the heart of the mountain, passing by and through more canyons, waterfalls and groves of pines as you feel the temperature begin to drop.
Carry on further and you will see the famous hoodoo rock formations before dipping up and into the ponderosa forests. You will pass by vista after vista some of which look thousands of feet into the valley floor and over the city of Tucson. By the end of your journey you see the white barks of the shaking aspens before entering the quaint little town of Summerhaven.

It is said you can experience a journey from Mexico to Canada by taking the Catalina Highway from Tucson to Summerhaven on top of Mt Lemmon. The drive goes up 6,000 vertical feet and encompasses different life zones you will find in North America, providing spectacular views for residents and visitors alike. Recently, the University of Arizona’s College of Science produced the Mount Lemmon Science Tour app whose goal is to provide its users with a deeper understanding of this natural environment.

Mount Lemmon, Arizona - In Another Minute (Week 305)
- - Mount Lemmon, just north of Tucson, Arizona, is the perfect reprieve from the heat of Tucson and the Sonoran Desert.
With the summit at 9,159 feet (2,792 m), Mount Lemmon has the highest peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains. It features a popular skiing area on the north side, Mount Lemmon Ski Valley, and the small town of Summerhaven, which apparently has mostly summer residents and a few year-round residents.
The only paved road up to the village Summerhaven near the top of Mount Lemmon is scenic Catalina Highway (aka Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway). To experience what that looks like, please check out this 1-minute video: Catalina Highway (Arizona) – In Another Minute (289).
After you get to Summerhaven, it's time to hike...
Mount Lemmon is a stop along the Arizona National Scenic Trail. The 800-mile long Arizona Trail cuts through the length of Arizona, from Mexico to Utah. And there are plenty of other trails along the mountain. When I visited friend and acupuncturist Jess Grotfeldt in October, we chose Sunset Trail. It offered a refreshing creek, dramatic boulder-strewn valleys, tall pines, bright wildflowers and even the discovery of a Horned Lizard. If you look closely, at the end of my video you can even see Tucson far, far below and trying to hide in the haze.

We spend an afternoon hiking as far as we can on the Mt. Lemmon Trail #5. This trail starts at 9000 ft elevation and descends nearly 4000 feet, following beautiful ridges with incredible views. We ran out of time and only ended up completing 11.5 miles in 5.5 hours. We did this hike in mid November and it was quite chilly. Layering is recommended. Enjoy!!
