Mitsumine Shrine 三峰神社 | Chichibu, Japan
Deep into the mountains of Chichibu, Japan, 1000 meters in the air, sits Mitsumine Shrine. It's rare for its worship of the now-extinct Japanese wolf (ookami, オオカミ,狼) and dates back 1900 years. Worship of the animal deities protects one from misfortune. It is an important cultural spot as it has a mythically direct connection to the imperial family and is part of the story of legend Yamato Takeru, celebrated by the Japanese as an ancient unified of the old provinces.

Mitsumine Shrine, located on top of Mount Mitsumine, is one of 3 major shrines in Chichibu, Saitama and by far the oldest! According to the legends, Mitsumine Shrine was apparently founded around the first century during the reign of the 12th Emperor of Japan: Keiko. It is only centuries later, between the 8th to the 19th centuries that many precincts were added by the monks of Mitsumine Shrine, including for example the actual main shrine, which was erected in 1661.
Mitsumine is also famous for the deities that it enshrines. Indeed, Mitsumine Shrine counts as its guest the god Izanami and his wife the goddess Izanagi who, according to the Japanese mythology, created Japan.

Mitsumine Shrine: Its Seven Wonders & Legacy of the Wolves
Looking for a Saitama day trip? Mitsumine Shrine, one of the most beautiful shrines in Japan, is located deep in the mountains of Saitama Prefecture, at the top of Mt. Mitsumine approximately 1,100m above ground, making it one of Japan's famous unkai viewing spots (sea of clouds).

Mitsumine Shrine is one of the rare shrines that worship guardian wolves, rather than dogs. In ancient times, wolves were considered holy and offered protection against fire and house break-ins (in a spiritual sense). Before there were even roads or clear mountain paths, people would make the arduous and sometimes treacherous ascent up the mountain to the shrine to offer their prayers in return for protection.
One notable visitor of the shrine was the late Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994), founder of Kyokushin Karate. Masutatsu made numerous visits to the shrine and secluded himself in the woods as part of his training. He would later on be featured in a manga called Karate Baka Ichidai (lit. A Karate-Crazy Life) as the main character. The English title was Karate Master.
Normally people will take a train and bus to the shrine's entrance, however if you are feeling adventurous, you can do the scenic 2-3hr hike from the very bottom.

Mitsumine Jinja 2018
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Kanto koshin ]
Mitsumine Shrine (三峯神社, Mitsumine-jinja) is an atmospheric shrine at the summit of Mount Mitsumine in Chichibu. A popular center of mountain worship, the shrine's forested grounds are home to a range of highly ornate buildings. Today, the shrine can be comfortably reached by bus or car, but it also remains accessible as part of a hiking trail network that connects Mount Mitsumine with the valley below and neighboring peaks and valleys.
At the entrance to the shrine grounds stands a triple torii gate (mitsu-torii), a very rare style of torii. In front of it are two stone wolves instead of the stone dogs (koma inu) usually flanking shrine entrances. Mitsumine Shrine is a relatively rare shrine that worships Japanese wolves, a now-extinct animal that has been revered as a guardian against misfortune. To the left of the torii gate, visitors will find a small treasure hall with exhibits pertaining to the history of the shrine including information on wolves, wolf pelts and documents focusing on the imperial family and its connection to the shrine.
One of the shrine's defining features are the intricate carvings found on many of its buildings, especially on the Zuishinmon Gate and the offering hall. The cravings depict everything from creatures to flowers in vivid colors that contribute to a level of opulence within the complex that is relatively unique in Japan and is seen only at another handful of establishments including Nikko's Toshogu Shrine.
Another place not to miss on the shrine grounds is a small pavilion that looks out over the surrounding mountains and valleys. Furthermore, there are also various smaller shrines on the grounds that are dedicated to a variety of other prominent gods. Adjoining the shrine are a Japanese inn and the Mitsumine-jinja Kounkaku hot spring bath that is open to the public.

Today, the administrative area of Chichibu city stretches out all the way to the borders of western Tokyo (Okutama) and Yamanashi, Nagano and Gunma prefectures. Thus a large part of the Saitama side of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park is located within the official city limits.
