Beautiful Kyoto: Snow Day in Mt. Takao [4K]
Though you have surely seen breathtaking photos of snow-covered Kyoto, a decent snowfall that sticks around is sadly quite rare here in the ancient capital. So when the Discover Kyoto team woke to snow this January, we packed our bags and headed out bright and early to nearby Mt. Takao. Home to three historical temples and overflowing with natural beauty, Mt. Takao is famous for its fall colors… but don’t count this mountain out just because it’s winter! Whether it’s the gorgeous view of icy branches from Kōzan-ji’s hall, the striking scarlet of Saimyō’s bridge, or the snow-covered roofs of Jingo-ji, Mt. Takao is the perfect place to escape the crowds in the city center to enjoy the snow in quiet contemplation as if you were a monk of old.

This VLOG in Japan will guide you how to get to mount takao and hike it all the way up. It is an amazing experience!
How to get there:
From wherever you are in Tokyo to get to Mount Takao you need to go to Shinjuku Station. Once you get there you need to take the metro on the Keio Line in direction to Takaosanguchi, it will take you around 40 minutes and you will get off in the last station called Takaosanguchi.
Arriving in the last station you will see straight away the mountain on the left side of the train.
Ok, now is time for you to choose which way up you should take, here below are all the trails and what can you expect from them.
Trail 1 - Dark blue line
Follows the pilgrims' trail to takaosan Yaku-ou-in Temple, past a surprising variety of wildflowers.
Trail 2 - Light blue line
See evergreens on the south and deciduous trees on the north, for completely different forest experiences.
Trail 3 - Green line
This evergreen trail offers a symphony of bird calls
Trail 4 - Dark green line
Walk under the bright canopy of a deciduous forest. No better sensation than this green shower.
Trail 5 - Gold line
This trail circumnavigates just below the summit, offering connections to all the various trails.
Trail 6 - Yellow line
This trail winds up a valley through a dense forest of ancient cedars.
Inariyama trail - Red line
While some section as a little rough, this ridgetop trail offers refreshing, wonderful views.
Once you get to the top you get an amazing view over the mountains and you can even see Mount Fuji on one side and you can see Tokyo on the other side.

Autumn leaves in Kyoto: Takao, temples and the beautiful mountains
Subscribe for more videos!
Back in autumn last year, I decided to head up into the mountains north of Kyoto to see some of these famed leaves and try and avoid the crowds.
Takao is about an hour bus ride from JR Kyoto station and has some stunning scenery and beautiful temples to explore. During autumn, there are night illuminations of the leaves and you can even sample some tempura momiji, or young maple leaves coated in tempura batter and then fried as a tasty seasonal snack.
