Mount Tallac Summit (9,735ft)
Overview: The jewel in the crown of mountains which ring Lake Tahoe, Mt. Tallac promises unparalleled views from its summit 9,735ft above sea level.
We guide you to the top via the most direct summer route through lush forest, along scenic ridgelines, past small alpine lakes and across blazingly colorful wildflower strewn high-altitude meadows. Sure the 3,500ft elevation gain is greater than you might experience on most day hikes, but both the journey and the destination are worth every single thigh-burning step.
Elevation Gain:
• 3,500ft (from 6,400 - 9735ft)
Tips: • Remember to register for a free Desolation Wilderness permit at the trailhead.
• June to October is the best time to hike Tallac. Some snow may prevail at higher elevations until late July, but that is unlikely to cause problems for hikers.
• Summer thunderstorms are common from mid afternoon. We recommend an early start to avoid being exposed at high elevations at these times.
• Glen Alpine Trail is an alternative route to the summit of Tallac, popular with backbackers camping in the Desolation Wilderness. However, an 11 mile day trip via Gilmore Lake is feasible but not covered by this guide.
• Mount Tallac is one of the most popular backcountry skiing and snowboarding destinations in the US. Search the internet for information about the winter Spring Creek Trail ascent for more details.
Mount Tallac offers probably the best view you'll find around Lake Tahoe, where you can survey the entirety of the landscape in all directions around you
Lake Tahoe - Rock Climbing and Mt Tallac Hike
One year ago we took a trip to Lake Tahoe California. On our adventure we were joined by Jens brother Richard. Richard is a rock climbing expert and prepared us to climb 90ft rock slab. On our second day we took the 10 mile hike to the summit of Mt Tallac. Mt Tallac is a hike rated difficult for its length and steep incline. Once at the summit of Mt Tallac you are treated to a view of Lake Tahoe.

Hiking Mt. Tallac, Lake Tahoe | 360 Video
Here is a video from a trip to Lake Tahoe with the hiking group, Hikes & Hops. We went up to Floating Island & Cathedral Lakes trail which takes you to the base of Mount Tallac. During the hike you are blessed with breath taking views of Lake Tahoe, and other high sierra lakes along the way. At the end of the trail reaching the Mt. Tallac base came, there was another high sierra lake which make for a perfect spot to take a dip and relax for a little while before our descent. If you decide to hike this trail, don't forget your camera.

BACKPACKING: Tahoe Rim Trail - Overnight Shakedown + First Bear Encounters
DAY 1 - Tahoe City to Watson Lake: 13.17 miles / +3101 ft. (+945.2 m) / -1559 (-475.2 m)
DAY 2 - Watson Lake to Tahoe City: 13.17 miles / +1559 ft. (+475.2 m) / -3101 (-945.2 m)
September 2018. The Tahoe Rim Trail, or the TRT, is a 165 mile (265.5 km) loop around the Lake Tahoe Basin in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The majority of the long trail is in California, with a portion of the east side in Nevada. The TRT spans through 2 states, 6 counties, 3 national forests, 3 wilderness areas and a state park.
The Tahoe Rim Trail provides a glorious array of alpine lakes, meadows, conifer forests, ridges, peaks, scree slopes, waterfalls, numerous streams and wildflowers. Being able to circumnavigate one of the most beautiful lakes on earth via mountains is truly a hiker's paradise.
After learning that my permit to the Grand Canyon backcountry was accepted, I set out to do more hiking in preparation and dial in my gear. I had made significant changes to the setup I used on my first two outings, mainly to increase efficiency and decrease weight. As the TRT was only a few hours from home and the majority of the trail didn't require a permit, it was perfect for a quick overnight to shakedown my system.
My base weight was 37 lbs (16.8 kg) on my 1st backpacking trip. Then it slimmed down to 31 lbs (14.1 kg) on the 2nd trip. For this trip, it dropped to 20 lbs (9.1 kg). I also carried 6 days of food and 4 liters of water (the stretch between Tahoe City and Watson Lake is dry) to mimic a long, dry stretch until a resupply on a thru hike.
As my systems simplified and the materials improved, the weight, effort and funds decreased while my enjoyment and efficiency increased. In other words, I was carrying 17 lbs (7.7 kg) of things I didn't need (most of it due to fear and inexperience). By this backpacking trip, I had cut my base weight nearly in half. It changed the game.
I also had my first bear encounters in the wild!

Mt. Tallac Trail.
Mount Tallac is a mountain peak southwest of Lake Tahoe, in El Dorado County, California. The peak lies within the Desolation Wilderness in the Eldorado National Forest. It is quite visible from State Routes 89 and 28, and U.S. Route 50. A cross of snow is clearly visible on the mountain's face during the winter, spring, and early summer months.
The jewel in the crown of mountains which ring Lake Tahoe, Mount Tallac promises unparalleled views from its summit 9,735ft above sea level. Unparalleled vistas await the Tahoe hiker on a memorable journey to the lake's tallest peak.
This route takes you to the top via the most direct summer route through lush forest, along scenic ridgelines, past small alpine lakes and across blazingly colorful wildflower strewn high-altitude meadows. Sure the 3,500ft elevation gain is greater than you might experience on most day hikes, but both the journey and the destination are worth every single thigh-burning step.
The summit is very rocky and can be confusing. Make sure you have a good understanding of your whereabouts so you can easily find your way back down.

Backpacking in Tahoe. Desolation Wilderness. Mt. Tallac Summit.
Whew! Been so long since I have uploaded a video! Get ready as I have a lot on my drive that need to be put out.
Starting off, I planned a 3 day backpacking trip in Tahoe for my birthday on July 12, 2015. Specifically we were to be backpacking in South Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness. 1st day was a rendevu point at Fallen Leaf Campground. Scott and Melissa were coming down from Idaho. Brad from L.A. I realized I have never experienced Tahoe. Therefore I planned a trip that would allow us to explore most of the must see parts in South Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness. We stayed in a hotel the last night since I did not want to smell for the 10 hour drive back to San Diego. We stayed at Base Camp Hotel which was amazing! The vibe of the place was still very earthy, right across the street from the state line, and walking distance to Base Camp Pizza Restaurant which btw is listed as #2, best place to eat in South Tahoe. Yes. The place delivered with an amazing outdoor seating and live music. The trip was definitely worth the drive and this is absolutely a memorable birthday. So thankful my friends and husband could join me on this trip. The crew just makes it that much more funner. Funner. It's a word. Uh huh.
Additional photos and footage are courtesy from the crew: Eric Zanutto, Melissa Jones, Scott Jones, Brad Wisler. Without their footage this video would not be complete!
Thank you Thank you THANK YOU THANK YOU so much for coming guys. I love you SO much.

Mt. Tallac hike | Lake Tahoe | 9,735 ft | Elevation Gain 3,500 ft | GoPro Hero 6
Here's my first video production. I just looked up the basic tutorials and created this master piece (just kidding). I hope this is not that bad to watch. I would appreciate some feedback on this video which I'll definitely include in my next uploads.
About the hike:
Hiked Mt. Tallac in Lake Tahoe on June 30th, 2018. The summit is at 9,735 ft above sea level and we gain about 3,500 ft from the start of the hike. The round trip is about 10 miles. The hike starts off in the woods across the lake and then gradually picks up. Most of the hike is on rocky terrain and if you're lucky, the top of the mountain will have some snow cover. Go build a snowman!
About me:
I was carrying a 50 lbs backpack during the hike. We took lot of breaks during the summit (and lots of pictures of course!) and it took me about 5 hours to reach the summit. About 2 hours on my way down. So in total, it was about 7 hour round trip for a 10 mile 3,500 ft elevation gain hike. I believe I can nail this hike in 5 hours or less. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been hiking at Mission Peak almost twice a week for a year now. I'll be hiking Mt. Shasta next weekend and more challenging hikes in the future.
About the tech:
All the video content was captured using GoPro Hero 6. Most of the content is from a third person view i.e. on my backpack and over my shoulder.
Source Resolution and Frame Rate: 2.7K @ 60 fps
Here are few more settings from GoPro Hero 6:
Optical Image Stabilization ON
Linear FOV
Shutter Auto
EV Comp -0.5
ISO Min 100
ISO Max 400

Audio Stereo - but didn't use it for this upload
Video Editing:
I'm a complete amateur when it comes to video editing. I do have a background on Image / Video Processing as I have a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering but absolutely no clue about photography / editing or experience. That being said, I used the free open source tool Shotcut for all the editing.

Winter in Lake Tahoe in 4K | Snowshoe Hiking & Sunset Cruise
After a wonderful blizzard, we hiked and snowshoed around Lake Tahoe's famous Fallen Leaf Lake along the Mt. Tallac trail. Winter is a beautiful time, and showshoeing allows you to safely check out some of the surrounding wilderness. In this video, we briefly hiked off trail to reach Floating Island Lake, a hidden gem of South Lake Tahoe. Just be sure you know where you're going and that you're properly prepared!
Winter in Tahoe also offers an amazing opportunity to take to the lake, which we did through Emerald Bay Cruises. Although chilly, its the perfect conditions to hop on the lake as the temperature deters most other tourists.
Mark Twain once visited this amazing lake and wrote about his journey in Roughing It. While most tourists come here ski, gamble and snowboard, going uphill can be just as fun (if not more) as going down hill.

South Lake Tahoe Eagle Falls Hike
April 22, 2019 we hiked out out to lower and upper Eagle Falls then out to Eagle Lake. The entire hike was in the snow but totally doable as most of it was easy terrain. This offers absolutely amazing views and when you get to the lake you will be amazed at how gorgeous it is sitting in the middle of these amazing rock cliffs. The hike is a short hike so even people he rarely hike can manage this!
