Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean
Mudam Luxembourg opened in 2006 in a purpose-built building designed by the renowned Sino-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei and located in the Park Draï Eechelen, overlooking the historic city of Luxembourg. Through its collection, exhibitions, programmes and partnerships, Mudam Luxembourg aims to advance its mission to collect, present and make accessible the most relevant art of our times, for the largest public possible.
The architecture of the museum is intended as a dialogue between the natural and historical context of its site. In its orientation it represents a link between the past (the former Fort Thüngen and the historic city of Luxembourg), the present and the future (the European district of Kirchberg). With its neighbouring cultural institutions that include the Musée Dräi Eechelen, the Philharmonic Concert Hall by Christian de Portzamparc, and the Place de l’Europe by Ricardo Bofill, Mudam is an iconic architectural landmark of Luxembourg City.
The building is spread over three levels of 4,000 m2 of surface area dedicated to the museum's exhibitions and collection. The simple volumes and generous spaces and the play between interior and exterior with views onto the surrounding Park Dräi Eechelen are covered with an audacious glass canopy. I. M. Pei's use of the honey-coloured limestone known as Magny Doré endows the building with a distinctive luminosity animated by subtle plays of light and shadows across the day and the seasons.
The Park Dräi Eechelen was designed by landscape architect Michel Desvigne, for which he was awarded the Luxembourg Prize for Architecture in 2011. Desvigne’s design is distinguished by its minimalist composition of trees and paving that gently slopes from the urban Place de l'Europe to the natural surroundings of the historical Fort Thüngen.

Since 1988, Luxembourg has regularly participated in one of the most important international contemporary art events: the Venice Biennale, one of the characteristics of which is the hosting of national pavilions, inherited from the model of 19th century International Exhibitions. The history of Luxembourg's participation in the Venice Biennale reads like a veritable success story.
The first participations only offered Luxembourg's artists limited exhibition conditions: confined to the Padiglione Italia, which at the time hosted countries without pavilions. Then, in 1995 what appeared to be an inextricable situation - the eviction of countries without pavilions from the Giardini, the main site for the Biennale - turned to Luxembourg's advantage. Finally, in 2003 to everyone's surprise, the Luxembourg pavilion, installed since 1999 in a 15th century building known as the Ca' del Duca, was awarded the Golden Lion for best national participation.
The exhibition Atelier Luxembourg - The Venice Biennale Projects 1988-2011 retraces the exceptional development of the presence of a small country in this international contemporary art event. As far as possible, it reconstructs the artistic projects as they were displayed in Venice, with the original artworks and the necessary adaptations for their exhibition in a museum context. Presented are the projects by Patricia Lippert and Moritz Ney (1988), Marie-Paule Feiereisen (1990), Jean-Marie Biwer and Bertrand Ney (1993), the pavilion Potemkin Lock by Bert Theis (1995), a reinterpretation of the installation Magazzino by Luc Wolff (1997), Chewing and Folding in Venice by Simone Decker (1999), the installation Casa Mia by Doris Drescher (2001), the exhibition Air Conditioned by Su-Mei Tse (2003), Mondo Veneziano a movie by Antoine Prum (2005), the video installation Collision Zone by Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert (2009) and the installation Le Cercle fermé by Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil (2011).
Because it was intimately linked to the space of the Ca' del Duca itself, the project Endless Lust by Jill Mercedes (2007) is only presented in the exhibition in the form of documentation.
The various presentations are accompanied by archive documents and filmed interviews specially produced for the occasion, in which the artists cast a retrospective gaze on their Venetian experience. The considerable development of Luxembourg's art scene over the last 25 years is indirectly reflected through the Biennales.
This exhibition is part of the framework of Atelier Luxembourg, an initiative including several exhibitions and projects focussed on artistic creativity in Luxembourg since 1945, developed in partnership with Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain, the Centre national de l'audiovisuel (Dudelange), the Musée d'histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Musée national d'histoire et d'art and Villa Vauban - Musée d'art de la Ville de Luxembourg.
Luxembourg's 1956 participation in the Venice Biennale is currently on display at the Musée national d'histoire et d'art in Luxembourg (21/09/2012 - 20/01/2013).

I took a free walking tour Kirchberg and Pfaffendal neighborhoods of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg with Walky Talky Tours. We saw the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the big office and European Union buildings along J.F. Kennedy Avenue, the MUDAM Museum of Modern Art, Fort Thungen, Kirchberg, Vauban towers, Pfaffenthal, the Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator, and more. Shot in September 2019.

Coinciding with May 2019, the European Month of Photography, Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean presents a monographic exhibition for one of the most important photographers of her generation, LaToya Ruby Frazier (*1982). Since the early 2000s this American artist has developed a documentary practice that is both personal and engaged with the social, political, and economic realities of the United States.
Frazier's photographic series The Notion of Family, was developed between 2001 and 2014 around three generations of women – her grandmother, mother and herself – witnessing the decline of her hometown of Braddock, the former steel capital of the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that would subsequently become a ghost town. Based on personal experience, the series makes visible a collective history that is universal in its scope. Frazier has said: Braddock is everywhere.
For her exhibition at Mudam, Frazier presents The Notion of Family with two more recent bodies of work that continue her focus on the working classes and the interaction between personal life and sociopolitical issues. On the Making of Steel Genesis: Sandra Gould Ford (2017) is the outcome of a close collaboration with Sandra Gould Ford, a photographer and writer who was employed in the steel industry of Pittsburgh and who documented life in factories that were closing down. The second series, Et des terrils un arbre s’élèvera (2016-2017), is the result of an ambitious project near Mons, in Borinage Belgium, created in collaboration with former miners and their families.

She has participated in international biennials, such as the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), the 8th Busan Biennale (2014) and the 76th Whitney Biennial (2012). Frazier was awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation Award in 2016 and the MacArthur Fellowship in 2015 as well as, the Infinity Award by the International Center of Photography of New York for her book The Notion of Family (Aperture, 2014).

Park(ing) Day in Luxembourg City, 17.09.2010, Mudam invites Trixi Weis
In the frame of the Mobility Week 2010 and in continuity of the Design City project, Mudam and the City of Luxembourg joined on 17.09.2010 the international Park(ing) Day initiative.
During this day, citizens of dozens of countries reconquer public carpark spaces.
CoRobots - MUDAM Luxembourg
CoRobots is an ambitious mediation project for a 21st century museum, initiated by the researcher Patrice Caire.
The project consists in “robotically” supporting the Mudam’s Publics Department. Developed over three years, this programme consists in enabling robots to welcome and interact with museum visitors. The project’s first phase was unveiled at the exhibition in July 2015. The exhibition “Eppur si muove. Art and Technology, a Shared Sphere” ran until 17 January 2016.
CoRobots is a project of the Interdisciplinary Centre for ICT Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) in collaboration with the Ville de Luxembourg.

Bert Theis Retrospective at Mudam Luxembourg
Bert Theis: Building Philosophy – Cultivating Utopia at Mudam Luxembourg is the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Luxembourg-born artist Bert Theis (1952-2016). Bert Theis’s oeuvre can be seen as a continued attempt to create situations that allow the viewer to feel and reflect on their presence and place in the world that surrounds them. His creations, which he readily described as “philosophical”, always relate to the context in which they appear and are faithful to his political, social and artistic engagement. Aesthetically-refined, they encourage both dialogue and introspection. For Theis, art was an emancipatory tool, humor a weapon of thinking, and the artist a responsible and critical social being.
This video provides you with an exhibition walk-through and an introduction to Bert Theis’ oeuvre by the curator of the exhibition and close friend to Bert Theis, Enrico Lunghi.

Teaser: Park(ing) Day in Luxembourg City, 17.09.2010, Mudam invites Trixi Weis
On September 17, 2010, Mudam takes part in the first Park(ing) Day citizen action and invites the artist Trixi Weis to invest public space, more precisely a parking space in the district of the central station of Luxembourg City.
Trixi Weiss transforms her parking spot into a video installation. On a road sign screen, a hand communicates with the passers by and shows us a sign language used between motorists, whether it is nice, indicative, premonitory or insulting.
Hermetically locked up in our favorite toy, the car, we learned how to express ourselves thanks to rudimentary means of communication and physical actions translating our states of mind.
Just before her monographic exhibition at the Gallery Nei Liicht in Dudelange, Trixi Weis gives us a preview of this new work thanks to a device adapted to the public space.
Trixi Weiss was born in Luxembourg in 1967. She lives and works in Luxemburg.

Sarah Sze. Installation at Mudam Luxembourg. The Musée d'art moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) in Luxembourg opens the 2012 program with a series of new exhibitions ranging from painting and sculpture to design and fashion. One of the shows presents a new work by New York-based artist Sarah Sze. Sarah Sze is known for her complex sculptures and site-specific installations, for which she utilizes everyday objects such as tea bags, water bottles, light bulbs, and electric fans. Mudam has invited Sarah Sze to create a new installation specifically for the Museum Pavilion. The artwork is titled Fixed Points Finding a Home.
Sarah Sze was born in 1969 in Boston. She graduated from Yale University in 1991 and received a MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1997. Sze had solo projects at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. Her work has been exhibited in international venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, the Whitney Biennial, and the Sao Paolo Biennial. Sze is a 2003 John and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow.
For New York's High Line, she created a work that's a sculpture as well as bird, butterfly and insect observatory, with perches, feeding spots and birdbaths (Still Life With Landscape). An exhibition that focuses specifically on Sarah Sze's process (Infinite Line) is currently on display at the Asia Society, New York.
The exhibition at Mudam Luxembourg, curated by Marie-Noëlle Farcy runs from February 11 to September 16, 2012.
