Mullaghmore, Ireland is a relatively new addition to the global big wave surfing scene. It's cold, temperamental, and very, very heavy. But when all the elements align it's one of the best big waves in Europe and over the last decade it has gone from a little-known spot favored by local hellmen to a world-renowned, media-frenzy wave.
Andrew Cotton caught one of the best swells of the winter at Mullaghmore. It was wild, windy, and the waves were unbelievable. The water footage in particular from this swell will chill you to the bone and make your heart skip a beat.

It's not often that Ireland' best big wave, Mullaghmore, plays host to huge swell and perfect weather conditions. But when it did this winter, filmer Alex Laurel was there to capture Ireland's best big wave surfers enjoy the day of the winter. Local stand-out surfers, like Conor Maguire, Barry Mottershead, Enda Curran, and Peter Conroy ruled the day, pulling into big barrels and taking heavy wipeouts.

Mullaghmore is a small seaside town in County Sligo. Classiebawn is the castle in the video. This is where Lord Mountbatten came for his holidays. He was killed on a boat trip he took in Mullaghmore.

With big-wave spots like Jaws and Mavs taking center stage over the winter and early spring months, it's easy to forget that those breaks don’t have a monopoly on mountainous, terrifying tubes. Above, a cadre of hardy Irish surfers remind us that Hawaii and California aren't the only places inhabited by hollow, harrowing waves and hard-charging hellmen. The two minutes of footage showcase surfers Gearoid McDaid, Enda Curran, Ryan Watts, Angus Scotney, Noah Lane and Conor Macguire tackling an infamous Mullaghmore—pulling into throaty caverns with timing that demonstrates years of home-court knowledge and experience. If you've ever worn booties and gloves thicker than 3-mill, you're aware of how incredibly difficult it is to surf average waves covered head to toe in a suffocating amount of neoprene. Now imagine slotting yourself into Mack-truck-sized tubes donning that much rubber.
