Municipal Park of the Springs

O Parque Municipal do Sítio das Fontes está instalado num terreno com cerca de 18 ha, pertencente ao Município de Lagoa.
É um local bastante especial porque, apesar da sua pequena área, podemos aqui encontrar uma grande diversidade de ambientes representativos da paisagem mediterrânica – o sapal, o paúl, o matagal, uma pequena lagoa temporária, zonas agrícolas abandonadas e os planos e linhas de água.
Constitui também um acontecimento importante do ponto de vista geológico pela presença das nascentes e proximidade do rio Arade.

É também interessante do ponto de vista histórico-cultural porque existem vestígios de atividades humanas que datam de tempos remotos. Os dois moinhos de água são os testemunhos mais eloquentes dessa atividade.
Restam cerca de uma vintena de moinhos ao longo do rio Arade, entre Portimão e Silves, quase todos em mau estado ou reduzidos a ruínas, mas que atestam bem a importância que tinham outrora para a economia local.


The Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes is set in a land of about 18 hectares, belonging to the municipality of Lagoa.
It is a very special place because, despite its small area, we can find here a wide range of representative environments of the Mediterranean landscape - the marshland, a small temporary pond, abandoned agricultural areas and the plans and water lines.

It is also an important event from the geological point of view the presence of springs and proximity of the Arade river.
It is also interesting from a historical and cultural point of view because there are traces of human activity dating back to ancient times. The two water mills are the most eloquent testimony of this activity.

A few water mills remain along the Arade River, between Portimão and Silves, almost all in poor condition or reduced to ruins, but well attest to the importance that had once to the local economy.
