- Lexington, Massachusetts is a historic town in Middlesex County. Originally settled nearly four centuries ago, the town is most famous as the site of the opening shots of the American Revolution. Today, Lexington is an affluent community that prides itself on the beauty of town land, the safety of its residents and the excellence of its public school system. The town has numerous parks, conservation lands, museums and libraries that provide exceptional opportunities for recreational and cultural activities.
The town was first settled as a part of Cambridge in 1642. Incorporated separately in 1713, the community saw light industrial development in the succeeding decades but remained predominantly agricultural in nature throughout the colonial period.
On the morning of April 19th, 1775, Lexington entered our nation's history when the British Army marched into town and were met by a local militia. Assembled by General Thomas Gage under the orders of British Secretary of State William Legge, Earl of Dartmouth, the British redcoats intended to capture and destroy a store of military supplies belonging to a rebel colonial militia. Rebel leaders had already received word of the Earl's instructions from sources in London, so the store of arms was removed from Concord and distributed to neighboring community. When the British troops arrived in town, a party of 77 militiamen emerged from Buckman Tavern to confront them, and amidst the ensuing confusion shots were fired on both sides. Eight colonists were killed, but a larger rebel force had already assembled in Concord, and once word of the fatalities reached nearby towns their ranks quickly swelled. At the North Bridge in Concord, several hundred militiamen fought and defeated three companies of the King's troops.
Today, the town commemorates the historic battle on Patriot's Day each April, with a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride and the battle itself drawing large crowds perennially. The town remains a popular tourist destination, with the historic landmarks of Battle Green, Buckman Tavern, Munroe Tavern and the Hancock-Clarke House all lovingly maintained by the historical society.

Yes, African-Americans, including slaves, fought for what was their country, too, and most of the reading here is audible. The marker describes Estabrook as a Minuteman which was not entirely correct as Lexington did not have a separate Minute company attached to its town militia.
Paul Revere stopped at Buckman Tavern several times during his ride and later he and another man retrieved a heavy trunk of John Hancock's personal paperwork and were dragging it into the woods as the Bwttle of Lexington began around them.

April 19, 2013 - The Oath Keepers and other 2nd Amendment advocates gather in front of Buckman Tavern in Lexington, an integral part of the Battle Green where the American Revolution began 238 years earlier on the day. John Franceschi of the Rhode Island Oath Keepers chapter greets us. Three days earlier, the Lexington Board of Selectmen had pulled a previously granted Permit to Stephen Redfern for the rally, giving reasons which were somewhat capricious. Also, that morning there was an ongoing manhunt for one of the Boston Marathon terrorist bombers and towns in the Boston area, including some near Lexington were in lockdown. The Battle Green was closed, with a high Police department presence in the immediate area. The Lexington Police work with the group to allow them to conduct a short Oath Keepers Ceremony on the site. BATTLE GREEN LEXINGTON
Here on Lexington green 70 minutemen await the arrival of the British Soldiers. It is five in the morning before both sides confront each other across the village green.
The British commander orders the minutemen to disperse and after some discussion with their commander Capt John Parker they begin to leave the field.
It is then as the minutemen disperse to their homes that a single shot if fired to this day no one knows where this shot came from.
The British soldiers formed up in their lines three ranks deep believe that they are coming under fire and so reply with concentrated volley fire into the dispersing minutemen and the tragedy begins.
This incident led to the revolutionary war and finally to the creation of the United States of America.
After this incident the British continued on to Concorde where at the North Bridge they were confronted by a much larger force of Minutemen now some 1700 strong who firing from concealed positions behind walls,trees etc inflicted heavy losses on the British column forcing them to retreat back to Boston
