Re-Presenting Histories: New Narratives from Museum Collections
Panellist Muzammil Hussain | Head of Outreach, Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum, Kargil talks about importance of Kargil's history and the need for such a museum, at Archives and Museums—Old Routes/New Journeys: A Conference on Critical and Creative Approaches to Making Collections Public.
This session features the museums as well as the artists and curators that IFA has supported through its fellowships. It will focus on the different ways in which collections have been curated in order to explore marginal and repressed histories that challenge dominant narratives. The session will also attempt to highlight issues such as interpretations and representations.
The conference was organised by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi and supported by Tata Trusts, Titan Company Limited and Ambedkar University Delhi on March 07 and 08, 2018 at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi.

On our Ladakh Trip we were fortunate to visit Kargil Memorial Centre at Drass. You can hear the commander talking about the heroics of our soldiers against the backdrop of Tiger hills and other points where the war was actually fought. A Proud moment for all of us and a big salute to the Indian Army. We feel safe in our homes because you protect us at the borders leaving your homes.....

Kargil Exploration | Apati Village & Maitreya Buddha
Apati Village, Located 35 kms from Kargil in the Sud Valley.
Famous for Rock carvings of Lord Buddha in the Maitreya Avtar, along with some unfinished and unknown sculptures.
Due to proximity to a river, the village is lush Green Village with apricot trees and Willow trees throughout the village. People in the village also have some farms of Maize and Barley, which are grown during the summer months.

Lessons on cultural restoration in war torn countries | Muzammil Hussain | TEDxSurat
Muzammil Hussain has been working on heritage restoration in Kargil, India and he shares his experiences with respect to the importance of post war restoration.
Having been born in Kargil(Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir), Muzammil was sent away by his parents at the age of 13, when he was just a 7th grader, to give him a wide berth from the mayhem of the 1999 Kargil War. Muzammil was rooted to his native land and returned after finishing his post graduate studies to help restore heritage of his native. Muzammil co-founded Roots Ladakh and with the intention of sharing knowledge, experimenting & awakening scopes of action he is currently spear-heading Roots Collective, an organisation which is rooted and dedicated to restoring the cultural heritage in areas of Ladakh through voluntarism. He also manages research & outreach for Central Asian Museum, Kargil.

Narendra Modi arrives in Kargil, to inaugurate 2 hydro-power projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ladakh on Tuesday on a daylong visit.
Modi was received at the Leh airport by Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra, chief minister Omar Abdullah, Ladakh parliamentarian Nawan Rigzin Jora, chief of Indian Army Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag and senior civil, police and military officials.
The Prime Minister is accompanied by Union power minister Piyush Goyal and national security advisor Ajit Doval.
Modi will inaugurate the 45 MW Nimoo-Bazgo hydroelectric power project which is situated at Alchi village, 70km from here.
The inauguration will be done at Leh polo grounds, where he will also be addressing a public rally.

HELLO friends . This video is quite long . I hope u like this video. I try to capture Hunderman Brok museum. Hunderman Brok is last village of Kargil LOC. Earlier museum was Pakistan army post in 1965. In this museum you can see Pakistan army bullets, old guns etc.Museum is not in very good condition but the people of village are very nice and kind. In this village u can see this museum and LOC. From above mountain next Pakistan. From here u can see clearly Pakistan area.. You can see Indus river too...
Till 1971, this village was part of Pakistan occupied Kashmir but Indian army liberated this village in 1971 war. Now this small village, overlooking the historic silk route, is part of India. These houses have a unique locking system.Lock is hidden between wall and door and only owner of the house knows how to open the lock. A rural tourism initiative ROOTS has converted some part of the village into a museum.
When I visited LOC near this village , it was written there that line of control is temporary, things can change here any time

Citizen 4 Forces Kargil war breifing
As part of 5 day excursion to Kargil Citizen 4 Forces team visited Dras war memorial and team was well received by Hawaldar Mohammed Rajak. Just to give viewer a background about Dras War Memorial, otherwise known as Bimbat War Memorial, it is the prime attraction of the town of Dras. The memorial, located about 5 km from the city centre across the Tiger Hill, commemorates the martyrs of the Kargil War. The names of the soldiers who lost their lives in the War are inscribed on the Memorial Wall and can be read by visitors.A museum attached to the Dras War Memorial, which was established to celebrate the victory of 'Operation Vijay', houses pictures of Indian soldiers, archives of important war documents and recordings, Pakistani war equipments and gear, and official emblems of the Army from the Kargil war. 'Operation Vijay', victory in Hindi, was the name given to the operation to clear Kargil of enemy soldiers. As a mark of respect and paying homage, tourists make it a point to visit the Dras War Memorial when around Dras. The Army personnel at the Memorial are very courteous and welcoming and treat visitors to coffee as well.

A dusty, nondescript village nestled amidst the craggy peaks of Kargil, Hunderman has seen much over the centuries. Once an outpost on the historic Silk Route, the strategically-sensitive Himalayan hamlet has witnessed innumerable skirmishes and four wars with Pakistan (including the most recent Kargil war).
However, few know that the village is also home to Unlock Hunderman, a unique ‘Museum of Memories’ that documents the life of border families. Here’s the fascinating story behind this unusual milestone.Located in a rugged valley between mountains over which the Line of Control (LoC) passes, the village of Hunderman found itself in a spot after India and Pakistan gained Independence. According to locals, the village has since been a part of two countries. Between 1947 and 1971, it was a part of Pakistan before it was taken into Indian control during the 1971 war in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Many villagers of Hunderman’s residents fled to Pakistan while the ones who chose to stay behind became Indian citizens overnight. Caught in the crossfire, most villagers faced a tough future. Other than a loss of livelihood, they also had to face the hostility of neighbouring villages.
In 1974,when a primary school was built in a small settlement in the upper parts of the valley, the villagers abandoned their old village (called Hunderman Brok) and moved to the new settlement. Here, they built clusters of mud-and-wattle houses for themselves and found employment as porters in the Indian Army.
United by the harshness of the terrain and the numbingly cold climate, the tightly-knit community began devoting their efforts to built a new future.As for Hunderman Brok, it lay vacant for years, becoming a ‘ghost’ village with silent houses and weather-beaten artefacts lying scattered across its narrow paths. It was not until 2015 that Ilyas Ansari, a man with historical roots in the village, decided to do something about it.
With help from Muzammil and Tafazzul Hussain (founders of Roots Ladakh, a travel company centred around rural tourism) and Roots Collective (a local NGO that worked for cultural preservation), Ansari began converting his ancestral property (two small houses) in Hunderman Broqa into a museum.
Work on the project began, leading to the unearthing of all sorts of artefacts – from colonial era-perfume bottles and traditional Purgi jewellery to bullets from the Indo-Pak wars. Carefully restored, they were included in the museum’s fledgeling display. Ansari himself contributed letters from his family archives to the collection.
The restoration of the age-old artefacts was accompanied by the architectural documentation of the old settlement, by architect Debasis Borah and transcultural designer Hélène Thébault (director of Roots Collective). A stepped cluster of daub-and-wattle houses, the Hunderman Brok settlement has an unusual architecture.
From the outside, one cannot see steps or streets of any kind that provide access to the terraces. Also, the unique lever mechanism of the locking system of every house is hidden between a wall and the door, ensuring that only the owner knew how to open a door.As Helene Thebault of Roots Collective told the Indian Express, “It’s a long journey. When the locals see us documenting mud structures and the landscape, they wonder why we want to preserve it. Our idea is to give back a lost heritage to the community.”
