African Safari at Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda | Travel with Jaunt Monkey
African Safari and wildlife watching is a dream for many. My first wildlife exposure in the continent was through an African Safari at Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. This video is about my game drive in Murchison Falls.
Our journey to Murchison Falls National Park started from Kampala. Kampala is the capital of Uganda. Distance from Kampala to Masindi is 214 km. Masidi is the nearest big town of Murchison Falls. And, the distance from Masindi to Murchison Falls is 44 km.
Murchison Falls National Park has an entry fee.
Murchison Falls National Park is the largest national park in Uganda with an excellent opportunity to view wildlife in Uganda. In Murchison falls, you can watch elephants, hippos, lions, antelopes, buffaloes, giraffes, and many more mammals while bird watchers have very many different species of birds.
The sight of river Nile squeezing itself through a narrow gap of 8 meters to plunge down is a majestic view from the top of the falls and also from the bottom by a boat ride.

Murchison Falls National Park is located in Masindi District in western Uganda is situated approximately 300 kilometres (190 mi), by road, northwest of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park. It measures approximately 3,840 square kilometres (1,480 sq mi). Also in the park, adjacent to the Masindi-Gulu Highway, are the Karuma Falls,
The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile from east to west for a distance of about 115 kilometres (71 mi). The park is the location of the famous Murchison Falls, where the waters of the majestic Nile River squeeze through a narrow gorge, only 7 metres (23 ft) wide, before plunging 43 metres (141 ft) below.
It is named for the Murchison Falls waterfall, the centerpiece of the park and the final event in an 80km stretch of rapids. The mighty cascade drains the last of the river’s energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes and buffaloes; while hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents.
In Murchison there are four of the “big five”. Buffalos, elephants, lions, leopards are best to be seen in the northern part (above the Nile). Due to excessive hunting and poaching, Rhinos became extinct by 1983, but were re-introduced into Uganda in 2005 by Rhino Fund Uganda. White rhinos are now being bred again in the 7000ha Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, which is located 70 km south of the park; their mission is to reintroduce small herds of rhinos (around five at a time), whilst retaining a nucleus breeding herd in the sanctuary.
Boat trips operate from Paraa to the foot of Murchison Falls and take around 3 hours. These enable you to see hippos, crocodiles and magnificent bird life close up.
There are also nature walks to the top of the falls and at Kaniyo Pabidi, where you can trek chimpanzees.
Kampala to Paraa takes around 5 hours and a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) is a national park in Uganda and managed by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority. It is in north-western Uganda, spreading inland from the shores of Lake Albert, around the Victoria Nile, up to the Karuma Falls.
Together with the adjacent 748 square kilometres (289 sq mi) Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the 720 square kilometres (280 sq mi) Karuma Wildlife Reserve, the park forms the Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA).
Location
The park straddles the Ugandan districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi.[2] The driving distance from Masindi, the nearest large town, to the Kibanda area of the national park is about 72 kilometres (45 mi).[4] This area is about 283 kilometres (176 mi), by road, north-west of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda.[5] The coordinates of the park near the Kibanda area are 02°11'15.0N, 31°46'53.0E (Latitude:2.187499; Longitude:31.781400).[6]
History
The explorers John Speke and James Grant were the first Europeans to visit the present day MFCA in 1862. It was more thoroughly explored by Samuel and Florence Baker in 1863-4. Baker named the falls Murchison Falls after the geologist Roderick Murchison, then the president of the Royal Geographical Society.
Between 1907 and 1912, the inhabitants of an area of about 13,000 square kilometres (5,000 sq mi) were evacuated due to sleeping sickness spread by tse-tse flies. In 1910, the Bunyoro Game Reserve was created south of the River Nile. That area roughly corresponds to the part of the MFNP that is in the districts of Buliisa, Masindi, and Kiryandongo. In 1928, the boundaries were extended north of the river into the modern-day Nwoya District.
In 1952, the British administration established the National Parks Act of Uganda. The area described above became Murchison Falls National Park.
MFNP is Uganda's largest national park. It measures approximately 3,893 square kilometres (1,503 sq mi). The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile from east to west for a distance of about 115 kilometres (71 mi).
The park is the location of the Murchison Falls, where the waters of the Nile flow through a narrow gorge only 7 metres (23 ft) wide before plunging 43 metres (141 ft).
Also in the park, adjacent to the Masindi-Gulu Highway, are the Karuma Falls, the location of the 600 megawatt Karuma Power Station, which will be Uganda's largest power station when it comes online circa 2018.
Wildlife
MFCA and the adjacent Bugondo Forest Reserve have 76 species of mammals as well as Uganda's largest population of Nile crocodiles. 450 bird species are present ranging from easy variety of waterbirds, including the rare shoe-billed stork, Budongo's 59 restricted range species, dwarf kingfisher, Goliath heron, white-thighed hornbill and great blue turaco.
Since 2005, the protected area is considered a Lion Conservation Unit.
KOBS TRANSLOCATION MURCHISON TO KIDEPO NATIONAL PARK
Over 100 Uganda Kobs have been translocated from Murchison falls national park to Kidepo valley national park.
The mass capture exercise and translocation exercise by Uganda wildlife Authority is aimed at boosting the numbers of Kobs which had dropped drastically due to the turmoil of 1970’s.
Before the commencement of the exercise Kidepo had only ten Uganda Kobs.

The Nile is generally regarded as the longest river in the world. The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Ripon Falls near Jinja, Uganda, as the Victoria Nile. It flows north for some 130km, to Lake Kyoga. The last part of the approximately 200km river section starts from the western shores of the lake and flows to the west until just south of Masindi Port - where the river turns north - then makes a great half circle to the east and north until Karuma Falls. For the remaining part it flows merely westerly through the Murchison Falls until it reaches the very northern shores of Lake Albert where it forms a significant river delta.
