A Trip to Mount Koya, Wakayama, Japan
On Saturday, June 19, 2015, a good friend of mine and I went to Koya-san near Wakayama City, Japan. It took us almost 3 hours by car to get there, but the whole trip was totally worth it! Mount Koya is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. In 2004, Mount Koya was added to UNESCO World Heritage List as one of three sacred sites in Japan's Kii Mountain Range.
Sacred Grounds of Okunoin (奥の院) in Koyasan (高野山), Wakayama Prefecture
Okunoin (奥の院) is the precincts of Koyasan (高野山) where Kobo Daishi Kukai's Mausoleum is located.
Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai (774-835), is the founder of Shingon sect of Buddhism in Japan. Shingon Buddhism in Japan, is probably the largest/oldest buddhist sect and Kobo Daishi has received the Buddhist teachings in China in around year 804. Upon his return he has introduced Buddhism to Japan.
Kobo Daishi, has made Mt. Koya (Koyasan) a 900 Meter high mountain peak in Wakayama Prefecture as the center of the Shingon Buddhism. Mt. Koya contains many temples and temple complexes that are associated with Kobo Daishi and Japanese Buddhism. Mt. Koya is considered as one of the three sacred mountains of the Kii Mountain Range and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon his death, Kukai's disciples erected a mausoleum in Mt. Koya, near the clear water flows of the Tama River. This holy ground is known as Okunoin and the Mausoleum is called Okunoin Gobyo. Monk Kukai is said to be in eternal meditation at Okunoin and it is believed by his followers that his spirit walks around Okunoin, greeting the visitors.
One of the entrances to Okunoin is called Ichinohashi bridge, literally means first bridge to Okunoin. Throughout the Okunoin, there are more than 200,000 grave stones belonging to war lords, military commanders, businessmen, priests, monks, shoguns, samurais and also common folk. The precincts are covered with tall cedar and pine trees that are hundreds of years old. As you walk through the precincts, you will also see lot of small temples and shrines.
The Gobyobashi (Gobyo bridge), is the final bridge to reach Kukai's Mausoleum. The Mausoleum is preceded by Torodo, which means the Lantern Temple. No cameras are allowed after this final bridge, so, there are no shots of the Mausoleum itself in this video.
But Sando, the two kilometer path to Mausoleum itself is surreal and once in a lifetime experience. Doing this walk during winter enhanced this experience, even though, my hands are almost frozen, taking this video by the time I reached the Mausoleum.
Hope you enjoy this presentation of Okunoin.

Mount Kōya (高野山 Kōya-san?) is the name of mountains in Wakayama Prefecture to the south of Osaka. Also, Kōya-san is a modifying word for Kongōbu-ji (金剛峯寺). There is no mountain officially called Kōya-san (高野山) in Japan. First settled in 819 by the monk Kūkai, Mt. Kōya is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Kōyasan Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. Located in an 800 m high valley amid the eight peaks of the mountain (which was the reason this location was selected, in that the terrain is supposed to resemble a lotus plant), the original monastery has grown into the town of Kōya, featuring a university dedicated to religious studies and 120 temples, many of which offer lodging to pilgrims. The mountain is home to the following famous sites:
Okunoin (奥の院), the mausoleum of Kūkai, surrounded by an immense graveyard (the largest in Japan)
Danjogaran (壇上伽藍), a heartland of Mt. Kōya.
Konpon Daitō (根本大塔), a pagoda that according to Shingon doctrine represents the central point of a mandala covering not only Mt. Kōya but all of Japan
Kongōbu-ji (金剛峯寺), the head temple of the Kōyasan Shingon Buddhism
Kōyasan chōishi-michi, the traditional route up the mountain
It also houses a replica of the Nestorian stele[1]
In 2004, UNESCO designated Mt. Kōya, along with two other locations on the Kii Peninsula, Yoshino and Omine; and Kumano Sanzan, as World Heritage Sites Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range

Traveling to Koyasan (高野山) from Nankai Hashimoto Station, Wakayama Prefecture
If you are taking JR Wakayama line or Nankai Koya Line, to get to Koyasan (高野山), most of the time you may have to switch trains to go to Koyasan at Hashimoto station. Initially this trip from Hashimoto will be on train, during which the train climbs to about 1500 feet above sea level by the time it reaches Nankai Gokurakubashi station. At Gokurakubashi Station you get on a Cable car (inclined railway) to finally reach Koyasan which is at around 2500 feet above sea level.
This video contains both legs of the journey and I think both of them are pretty enjoyable and interesting. Enjoy!!!
Danjogaran Complex (壇上伽藍), Koyasan Area, Wakayama Prefecture
Danjogaran Complex (壇上伽藍) contains more than fifteen structures in the midwestern area of Koyasan Mountain. These fifteen structures contain various items like, halls, stupas and temples. One of the most noted is the red colored Dai-to, means large stupa. In addition to this there are shrines that are dedicated to the kami of Koyasan and the halls that once housed Monk Kobo Daishi and his disciples. Some structures were built during Kobo Daishi's times and most of them were conceived during his time but were started and completed much later.
Enjoy!!!

Exploring Mt. Koya in Autumn: Lucky pine needles, Japan's largest cemetery, and all the leaves!
I've been wanting to check out Koyasan during the autumn for awhile now and finally made the trip up there from Osaka for the day. It was absolutely stunning and the leaves and temples there are always beautiful and so very peaceful. I also went for a wander around Japan's largest cemetery: Okunoin.

Best Temple in Japan. Koyasan Temple (My opinon that is)
Koyasan is a Buddhist Temple located at the top of Mount Koya. This is one of the most religious places in Japan. In my opinion the best Temple in all of Japan.
Beautiful wooded area surrounded by huge trees covered in moss, many small streams and a quiet tranquility that if you have the chance you should really check out.
You know the Japanese call Mount Fuji Fuji-san, so Koyasan is derived the same way. Koyasan is a very important place for followers of the Shingon Buddhism as it is here that that a man named Kobo Daishi introduced Shingon Buddhism to Japan in 805.
Now I don't want to tell you all about the religious aspects of this Temple, because I know there are people that will read this from all over the world and that follow many different religions, but let me just tell you about the Temple itself. I have been lucky enough to have lived in Japan for 4 years, and I have visited many Japanese cultural sites, from little known local temples and shrines to some of the most important. Koyasan is important for sure, but I must tell you that Koyasan felt special. I extremely enjoyed the Temple grounds. It's absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Most days I'm Mr. Negative to be honest, but I really enjoyed this place. It's not an easy place to get to, but it is well worth the trouble and I totally recommend it to anyone visiting Japan.
Many Japanese people will tell you that they visit this place because it is a place of great energy. I'm not sure, but I did feel good while there.
As always this was shot with my iPhone 4s. * I used youtubes' stabilization to stabilize this video, and to be honest, it doesn't looks so hot. I'm going to revert it when I have some time, or possibly re edit the whole thing.

Japan, Okunoin Cemetery Mt. Kōya - part 2 (slideshow)
MUSIC: ザ・ベスト 尺八名曲集
According to the superstition of the Shingon Buddhist school, there are no dead in Okunoin, but only waiting spirits. As the story is told, one day Kukai (774-835), better known in Japan under the name of Kobo Daishi, the founder of the religious community of Mount Koya, came out of meditation upon the arrival of Miroku, the Buddha of the future.
So all the souls in transit resting in the graves or of whom the hair or ashes had been placed by their loved ones in front of the Kukai Mausoleum, also rose up. Pending the advent of this apocalyptic prophecy, the number of graves in Okunoin continues to increase and already counts more than two hundred thousand and is the largest cemetery in Japan.
Mount Kōya (高野山 Kōya-san) is the common name of a huge temple settlement in the Wakayama Prefecture, south of Osaka. In the strict sense, Kōya-san is the so-called mountain name sangō (山号) of the Kongōbu-Temple (金剛峯寺 Kongōbu-ji).
First settled in 819 by the monk Kūkai, Mt. Kōya is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Kōyasan Shingon School of Japanese Buddhism. Located on an 800 m high plain amid eight mountain peaks the original monastery has grown into the town of Kōya, featuring a university dedicated to religious studies and 120 sub-temples. Many of the temples offer lodging to pilgrims.
Shingon Buddhism (真言宗 Shingon-shū) is one of the major schools of Japanese Buddhism and one of the few surviving Esoteric Buddhist lineages that started in the 3rd to 4th century and originally spread from India to China by traveling monks. Since this lineage was brought to Japan over 1,100 years ago, its doctrines have always been closely guarded secrets, passed down only orally and they have never been written down.

Part I : The Path
Time : 6h30 a.m.
Okunoin Cemetery, located in Koyasan, is a most astonishing cemetery. Founded in 805 by Kobo Daishi, one of Japan’s most important religious figures. Koysan is the center of the Shingo Buddhist sect. Kobo Daishi mausoleum is at the center of Okunoin Cemetery.
With over 200,000 tombstones located pretty much everywhere along the approach to the mausoleum, the Okunoin cemetery comes straight out of one of those Japanese ghost stories with neglected moss-covered tombstones standing immune to the passing of time. Magically the cemetery is at its best early in the morning or during a misty day where, if you are lucky enough, you will have the chance to hear the trees cracking under the pressure of the wind.
