Most of the kings of Porto Novo lived in this palace because, unlike the kings of Abomey, they did not mark their reign by new constructions. Abandoned in 1976 following feuds of succession, it has been the subject of extensive restoration work and has been open to the public since 1988, with the exception of a section reserved for the descendants of chiefs. We do not speak any more about kings, but about superior leaders since with the colonization the kings of Porto-Novo have been dispossessed of their political power.
The royal residence is located on a site of 2.5 ha. The buildings, built mostly in the XIX th century, are distributed around five courses, two of which impluvium, as in the palaces of Ife and Ketu, while outside are the temples and altars celebrating the memory of the ancestors of the royal family. The visit is worth a detour even if the former Royal Palace is less interesting than that of Abomey.

Bénin – accession au trône Agoli-Agbo: des chefs traditionnels clarifient et mettent en garde
Suite au décès de défunt roi Dédjalagni qui siégeait cumulativement sur le trône des Agoli-Agbo et celui du roi d’Abomey, et comme l’exige la tradition, un nouveau roi a désormais la responsabilité de conduire la destinée des Agoli-Agbo. Mais le processus de son accession au trône a été suspendu par le préfet du département du Zou. Le motif, des protagonistes protestent contre l’accession au trône du roi Alomankou Agoli-Agbo. Pour lever un coin de voile sur la situation et la suite du processus, des chefs traditionnels de la lignée royale ont, dans un entretien accordé à Bénin Web Tv, clarifié la situation et mise en garde les protagonistes contre le non-respect du protocole royal.

Le roi Alomankou Agoli Agbo a procédé dimanche 22 dimanche 2019 à la cérémonie de Libation dite Danminvo Fifon au palais royal Agoli-Agbo. Dans un entretien accordé à Bénin Web TV, le roi Agoli-Agbo a expliqué les tenants et aboutissants de cette cérémonie. Il a également passé en revue les brouilles entre les protagonistes et une rencontre initiée par le préfet pour ce lundi 23 décembre 2019.
