Exhibit pays tribute to Le Corbusier
(26 Sep 2012) For the first time in Russia, a museum is exploring the creativity, works and personality of the father of modern architecture, 20th century French urbanist Le Corbusier.
The exhibition is part of several events celebrating the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts' 100th anniversary.
The 1930 Villa Savoye in Poissy summed up Le Corbusier's famous five points of architecture for the modern world: pillars, supporting-walls-free facades, open floor plans, long horizontal windows and roof gardens.
With this philosophy, Swiss-born urban architect and designer Charles-douard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, wanted to revolutionise the way we lived in the 20th century. And he did.
But only now a complete show of his genius mind has found a space in a Russian museum.
The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts is celebrating its 100th anniversary and with it the farsightedness and intuition of the groundbreaking architect, as shown by this scale model of Voisin Plan for Paris, in 1925.
This exhibition aims to represent his outstanding personality as well as his influence on the 20th and 21st centuries' culture, art and and architecture.
Irina Antonova, the Director of the Pushkin Arts Museum says:
He used to bring concrete, iron, cement, glass to his architectural works. He used the most modern constructions, yet he was the architect to whom belong the words no one can wright off Technology is the true foundation of lyricism. In other words, he, Le Corbusier, did see that architecture is The Art.
Le Corbusier was born in 1887 in Switzerland but became a French national in 1930.
He died in France, where he did the bulk of his work, in 1965 .
In total he designed over 400 works, 75 of which were built in 12 countries of the world, including one in Russia. He was also the renowned author of 40 books and hundreds of articles.
A section of the exhibit features his diaries and journals, and looks at his paintings and sculptures as sources of inspiration.
Another part looks at Le Corbusier's collaboration with early Soviet architects.
Le Corbusier was passionate about Russia and was a friend of many Russian architects. He visited Russia many times throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
He was responsible for a huge building in Moscow in 1993, the Central Union, he also designed a project for the Palace of the Soviets, and developed a plan for the reconstruction of Moscow, which later became the basis for his Radiant City - the city of happiness.
Other works on display are cubist-like paintings, his much copied Chaise Long and a Totem sculpture, revealing different sides of his artistic expression.
The exhibition Le Corbusier. The Secret Laboratory: Art and Architecture 1907-1965 is on display until the 18th of November.
