Solidor Tower (in French tour Solidor) is a strengthened keep with three linked towers, located in the estuary of the river Rance in Brittany. It was built between 1369 and 1382 by John V, Duke of Brittany (i.e. Jean IV in French) to control access to the Rance at a time when the city of Saint-Malo did not recognize his authority. Over the centuries the tower lost its military interest and became a jail. It is now a museum celebrating Breton sailors exploring Cape Horn.
The Solidor Tower is located in the former city of Saint-Servan, which merged with Saint-Malo in 1967. It is featured in the 1957 Wendy Toye film True as a Turtle starring John Gregson, Cecil Parker, June Thorburn and Keith Michell.
Located at the mouth of the Rance and in the district of Saint-Servan, the Tower Solidor, built in the fourteenth century to control the city of St-Malo was then transformed into a prison. This tower is now home to the International Museum of Long Course and Cape Horniers in honor of long-haul sailing trips. You will be able to visit the Tower and enjoy the magnificent view offered by the outer walkway.

Saint-Malo is a port city in Brittany, in France's northwest. Tall granite walls surround the old town, which was once a stronghold for privateers (pirates approved by the king). The Saint-Malo Cathedral, in the center of the old town, is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles and features stained-glass windows depicting city history. Nearby is La Demeure de Corsaire, an 18th-century privateer’s house and museum.
Walking through the cobbled streets of St Malo’s old town feels like you’ve stepped back in time. This popular tourist destination and busy ferry port offers visitors an authentic glimpse into Brittany’s important seafaring past. Once the feared base of pirates (corsairs), heavily fortified against Norman (or English) attack, today's Saint-Malo is one of the top tourist draws in Brittany. The star of the show is the atmospheric walled city (intramuros), largely destroyed in the Second World War but painstakingly reconstructed. The modern towns of Parame and Saint-Servan lie outside the walls. It is also the birth place of renowned French explorer Jacques Cartier who is famous for exploring Quebec.
Saint-Malo has a good bus system, with the main terminals located at the train station and just outside the walls(St Vincent). Get a booklet with maps and times from any bus driver. A one and a half hour ticket costs €1.15. Unfortunately there are no bus services late in the evening. The walled city is easily covered on foot, but you can also opt for a dinky Tourist Train that takes you and your wallet for a ride (€5.50).

Dinan is a town in Brittany, northwest France. It’s known for its medieval ramparts, cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. Dinan Castle has a 14th-century keep and the Tour du Coëtquen, a 15th-century artillery tower. The grand, Gothic-style Saint-Malo Church has vibrant stained-glass windows. The Clock Tower offers panoramic views. The Rail Museum has model railways, plus posters and signal boxes.
Dinan is without doubt one of the most attractive and best preserved small towns in Brittany. With its 1.8 mile (3km)-long ramparts, half-timbered houses, attractive port and cobbled streets filled with art galleries and craft shops, it’s worth a day of anyone’s time.
The most attractive part of Dinan is arguably its port, which is where you’ll arrive if you take a boat from Dinard or St Malo. The quay is lined with old stone houses, many of which are now waterside restaurants and chandlers’ shops. Take a walk along the old towpath or cross the 15th-century stone bridge to Lanvallay to find out about life on the river in the Maison de la Rance discovery centre. Wherever you are, you won’t miss the 131ft (40m)-high viaduct.
From the port, make your way up the steep Rue du Petit-Fort, which was Dinan’s main point of access until the 18th century. This cobbled hill with its half-timbered houses appears on many a postcard; have a browse in the arts and crafts shops. Dinan has been designated a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (Town of Art and History) and the town is filled with artists, sculptors, engravers, bookbinders, glassblowers and more.
Dinan’s old town is a warren of narrow streets where it appears that time has stood still. The quaintest part is Place des Merciers where you’ll find the best examples of the town’s half-timbered houses; just opposite is the pedestrianised Rue de la Cordonnerie, also known as ‘thirsty street’ as it has nine bars.
To get your bearings, climb the 158 steps to the top of the 40m (132ft)-high Tour de l’Horloge for wonderful views over Dinan and the surrounding area – you can see as far as Mont St Michel on a clear day. Nearby Place du Guesclin is the site of the Thursday-morning market.
The 13th-century castle now houses the town’s museum and this is the best place to start a tour of the magnificent ramparts, 8804ft (2684m) long, which are the oldest and most impressive in Brittany. Dinan holds the Fête des Remparts medieval festival each July.

Saint-Malo has a terminal for ferry services with daily departures to Portsmouth operated by Brittany Ferries and services on most days Poole and Weymouth in England via the Channel Islands operated by Condor Ferries. It also has a railway station, Gare de Saint-Malo, offering direct TGV service to Rennes, Paris and several regional destinations. There is a bus service provided by Keolis. The town is served by the Dinard–Pleurtuit–Saint-Malo Airport around 5 kilometres (3 miles) to the south.
Now inseparably attached to the mainland, Saint-Malo is the most visited place in Brittany. Sites of interest include:

Saint - Malo est une petite cité fortifiée, blottie derrière ses remparts, face à l’océan. Sa silhouette de granit semble défier le temps, depuis des siècles. Et pourtant, celle que l’on surnomme « la Cité corsaire » est une ville presque neuve. Une ville qui s’est relevée de ses cendres, il y a 70 ans à peine, et qui renoue aujourd’hui avec sa riche histoire.
Eric Peyle est responsable du Mémorial 39-45, sur la cité d’Alet. Il nous raconte la destruction de la cité intra-muros, en août 1944, par les Alliés. Les quartiers historiques sont alors rasés à 80%. Le déluge d’obus incendiaires n’a épargné que quelques bâtiments anciens, qui apparaissent aujourd’hui comme de précieux et rares témoins du passé glorieux de Saint Malo.
Avec Philippe Pétout, conservateur en chef du musée de la ville, nous pénétrons dans quelques hôtels particuliers du 18ème siècle, épargnés par les bombardements. Ils appartenaient à des armateurs, enrichis par le commerce des épices ou des métaux précieux. Dans la vieille ville, nous découvrons également une architecture typique, sauvée des incendies : les maisons à galeries de bois vitrées. En particulier la maison natale de Chateaubriand.
Autres vestiges de ces siècles de faste : les forts, bâtis par Vauban, face à la cité. Ils n’ont pas été détruits. Véronique Véron est propriétaire du Fort National, elle nous accueille et nous fait visiter ce fort jusque dans ses souterrains.
Enfin, nous avons le privilège de découvrir deux malouinières, ces anciens manoirs de campagne construits pour les armateurs, aux alentours de Saint Malo. Deux malouinières totalement différentes et tout juste restaurées. La première, véritable maison des champs, a conservé le charme de son décor simple, tout comme ses plantations et sa ferme. La seconde est un petit château, d’une grande élégance. Un bijou d’architecture.

Saint-Malo est une ville portuaire de Bretagne, au nord-ouest de la France. De hauts murs en granite ceignent la vieille ville, qui fut autrefois un bastion pour les corsaires (pirates approuvés par le roi). La cathédrale de Saint-Malo, au centre de la vieille ville, arbore des styles roman et gothique, et possède des vitraux narrant l'histoire de la ville. La Demeure de Corsaire, à proximité, est une maison de corsaire datant du XVIIIe siècle. Elle sert à présent de musée.
Le château ducal de Saint-Malo (notrebellefrance)
La construction du château ducal de Saint-Malo commença en 1424 avec l'édification du Grand Donjon de 35 mètres de haut en forme de fer à cheval. Couronné de mâchicoulis, le donjon comporte une galerie couverte au dernier étage, dont le toit est surmonté de deux tourelles de guet accolées l'une à l'autre. Puis, le duc François II fit bâtir la Tour Générale au sud-ouest. Ensuite, ce fut sa fille la duchesse Anne de Bretagne qui fit élevée au nord-ouest la Tour Quic-en-Groigne, achevée en 1505.
