Mexicans to marvel at Michelangelo and Da Vinci works
A selection of 74 works by Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci as well as some other contemporary Renaissance artists will be put on show Friday in Mexico City for the audience to personally experience the maestros’ unparalleled influence on the development of Western art.
(Soundbite) Adolfo Mantilla, Palace of Fine Arts Staff Member
“We are excited to offer the Mexican public an exhibition of Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci. The show is a truly extraordinary one. This is not an exhibition in the normal way that can be seen in other galleries.”
The Palace of Fine Arts aims to present the creative paths of Michelangelo and Da Vinci through the displayed variety of works, including paintings, drawings, models, books and sculptures.
(Soundbite) Miguel Fernandez Felix, Museum Director
“This is an enormous opportunity that we move to the fantastic and fascinating period of the Renaissance.”
The Palace of Fine Arts offers two halls for the exhibition, which will include interactive and didactic elements to give visitors the full experience.
(Soundbite) Miguel Fernandez Felix, Museum Director

SAN JERONIMO, Guadalupe, Zacatecas (homenaje 2011)
Un homenaje desde la Cd. de México, a la tierra de mis antepasados.
Se muestra la construcción de la segunda torre del templo.
A excepción de los volcanes (desde la Cd. de México), todas las fotografías fueron tomadas en San Jerónimo.
SAN JERONIMO
Suave arrullo ondulante rumor.
Pensamiento, geranio, maguey,
Tejocotes, duraznos en flor,
Azucena, gladiola y clavel,
Zacatecas, Mexico
Located in Mexico's northwestern region, the state of Zacatecas was one of the most important mining regions during the colonial era and it played a key role in the Mexican Revolution. In Zacatecas, the state capital, you'll see magnificent architecture of pink quarry stone as you walk along the sloped streets, alleys and through the plazas. Among the notable edifices are the Cathedral, considered one of the best examples of Mexican Baroque architecture, and the Calderon Theater in the downtown area. The UNESCO declared the Historic Center of Zacatecas a World Heritage Site.
You'll also find numerous cultural events in the state capital, such as the Zacatecas Festival and the Zacatecas International Folklore Festival, which features performances by folkloric groups from various countries. For a panoramic view of Zacatecas, we recommend that you take a ride on the suspended cable car, which crosses the city from Cerro de la Bufa to Cerro del Grillo, allowing you to get a bird's-eye view of the beautiful architecture. After that you can visit the Museo de la Toma de Zacatecas and the Eden mine, where you can take a tour on an old mine train.
In other parts of the state you can visit the city of Fresnillo, where nearby you'll find a famous sanctuary and the towns of Guadalupe and Jerez. As for natural attractions, you can go hiking in the Sierra de Organos and the Sierra de Cardos, where you'll see impressive rock formations, making them the ideal spots for rappelling and other adventure sports. During your visit to Zacatecas, don't forget to explore La Quemada, one of the northern region's most important archaeological zones.

Campeche, Mexico
The city of Campeche, the capital of the state of Campeche, is located in the southern Gulf Coast region, 387 km (240 mi) northeast of Villahermosa, Tabasco, and 177 km (110 mi) southwest of Merida, Yucatan. The climate is tropical, with an average year-round temperature of 26º C (79º F). The city gets rainfall during the summer and autumn.
At this old commercial port, a giant wall still stands that once protected the city from pirate attacks in the 17th and 18th centuries. In this walled city, you'll see two forts (one of which houses a museum), seven bulwarks and two main gates (the Sea Gate and Land Gate). Thanks to these monuments and the spectacular buildings in the Historic Center, such as the Cathedral and the Templo de Guadalupe, the UNESCO declared Campeche a World Heritage Site in 2002. Without question, Campeche has one of the most well preserved historic centers in the nation.
During your stay, we recommend that you visit the Museo de la Cultura Maya, housed in the San Miguel Fort, and the Museo de las Estelas Mayas, which exhibits regional art in the San Pedro Bulwark. At night, don't miss the fascinating light and sound show at the Fort of San Jose El Alto. After the show, you can take a walk along the Historic Center's cobblestone streets, where you'll see a wide variety of stores, restaurants, bars and cafes. You can also take a stroll down the beautiful 3.5-km (2-mi) boardwalk, which leads to a tourist walkway, parks and a bicycle track.
In Campeche's surrounding areas, you can enjoy an outdoor adventure at the Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve, which is the habitat of hundreds of pink flamingoes. In addition, you can check out Calakmul, one of the largest biosphere reserves in the nation, which also has an interesting Mayan archaeological zone. Calakmul is a great spot to go camping, mountain biking and hiking.
During your visit to Campeche, don't forget to try the tamales with chaya leaves and the pan de cazon (tortillas stuffed or layered with shark, beans and salsa), among other regional Mayan cuisine. For all that and much more, Campeche is an excellent destination to discover history, traditions and exciting adventures.
